Things like this are all the worse when the player in question has previously gone out of their way to show their love for the club and appreciation of the fans. Like when Torres used to give interviews about how in love with Liverpool he was and how he hoped his daughter grew up with a scouse accent (lol)... Only to go to Chelsea for a bigger pay packet, and promptly declare that allegiance and sentiment plays no part in football, and anyone who claims otherwise is a bit thick. I don't actually mind mercenary footballers as such, and as a fan of a smaller club you kind of just accept that sooner or later your best players are going to leave you anyway. It's just the ones that disingenuously kiss the badge and lap up the admiration, only to slap those same fans in the face the first chance they get that pisses me off.

I'd be disappointed if we don't splash out on another forward when the inevitable happens. Presumably all the dross we've had out on loan and the dross we kept will go one way or the other and we'll be quite thin again, which is pretty much the opposite of what we need. The best revenge is massive success as they always say.

I hope that 15% is worth it Dein you horrible cunt, you just helped our captain shit all over his 8 year relationship with the club.

While I don't deny Dein is a slimy piece of work (and I fully expect him to turn his attentions to Song now, btw), let's not pretend Van Persie is a simpering cretin, marching to the beat of Dein's drum. He knows exactly what he's doing.

I'm going to find my boss tomorrow morning and tell him that I, an individual employee, don't agree with how he runs his company. And if he doesn't listen to me and start running things how I want I'll leave. At which point he'll piss his pants laughing and show me the door. And rightly so.

Come on now, this is ridiculous.

So are we calling him Van Per$ie yet?

I think he's off to Chelsea so he can remain in London. Shame to see him go but it was great to see him play like he did this season. He won't hold together next season for whoever buys him.

In the meantime, we will continue to be a feeder club until we start throwing around some cash. We don't want to end up like Liverpool and if we fall out of the Champions League, it will take a long time to get back in...

Sad news, but I think we're all kind of used to it now. That's what, 4 captains we've lost in the last 5 years? I've gone past the point of despair and just accepted it as the way Arsenal are run these days. But the thing that tears me up inside is that there are - genuinely - no Arsenal players I feel an affinity with anymore. Vermaelan I guess, but I worry that he'll be the latest in a long line of players to say they love the club and then promptly fuck off at the first opportunity. Just the way football's going, I guess.

:(

I saw this on twitter and I think it goes some way to explaining Van Persie's decision. In fact, I'd say he's probably doing the right thing and I wish him all the best wherever he ends up.

What did I miss? It's gone.

Clearly the captaincy like the number 9 shirt is cursed. Give them both to Squillaci.

We established Squid's current No18 is even more cursed than the No9, though.

When Giroud signed I had a horrible fear he was going to take No9 and go on to become an even poorer man's Chamakh.

Also I think Vermaelen will probably be club captain next, which is good in a way because realistically, unless he improves quite a lot, I can't see the really big boys being interested.

Personally I'd give it to Arteta, but that might be perceived as a slap in the face for Verm so probably won't happen.

edit: good Arseblog this morning.

If Verm becomes captain it makes him undroppable at CB when really Kos is the only player who has proved he should be automatic choice there.

Yea I was gonna say i'm not sure Verm is automatic first pick at centre back. Kos clearly is the boss and him and the BFG were starting to look good together. Plus there's Vermaelen's crazy :omg: :omg: :omg: forward runs to worry about.

edit: good Arseblog this morning.

Indeed. Well worth a read.

This bit is especially good and was the part of the statement that particularly wound me up:

Out of my huge respect for Mr. Wenger, the players and the fans I don’t want to go into any details, but unfortunately in this meeting it has again become clear to me that we in many aspects disagree on the way Arsenal FC should move forward.

Perhaps if Robin were the manager this might be appropriate but he’s a player, it’s not. It doesn’t matter if he’s captain. This particular section of the statement is quite pointed. If you disagree in ‘many aspects’ with the manager about the club of which you are captain then it makes it very difficult to continue at that club. The thinly veiled criticism of the manager might well be something certain fans agree with, and we’ve all had our issues with Arsene, but it was a low blow coming from a player who has received nothing but 100% backing from the boss in all the time he’s been here, through some very difficult times.

What the fuck makes RvP think he knows what is best for the club, and know better than Wenger. Arsene is not perfect but the guy has always had Arsenal's best interests at heart. The more I read about this, the more I get wound up.

I'll do it.

And I'll pay the Club for my ticket and travel each game. And buy my own kit.

To see you leave and join the Man City thread in a year? No thanks, you sit tight. ;)

It's bound to be Vermaelen, but you can't help but feel that the extra responsibility will lead to even more mazy forward surges when he really should just be stood on the edge of our penalty area booting and heading balls into the stratosphere whenever they come near him.

What's delightful and quite liberating is that after all these years of our best players leaving we're finally at a point where we don't have anyone left who's been good enough for long enough or has won anything with us to mean much if they leave. The curse is lifted! Sort of!
