Arsenal

I found that far too funny. I love Corporal Jenks though, the feature about him in this month's Arse Mag is just brilliant and proper school-boy dream material. Family of Gooners throwing him a suprise party to celebrate signing for the Club and decorating the house in Arsenal flags and playing a CD of Arsenal CDs. Lovely.

I thought Arsene had a bid for Gotze turned down last Summer, maybe I'm wrong.

I very much doubt we'll go for Hazard what with Chamerlain, Walcott, Gervhinho, Miyachi and Podolski (maybe) filling those wide positions. Having said that I would not be surprised if we bought another attacking midfielder.

A lot of rumours floating around that the Podolski deal is set to be completed.

Also a lot about Jan Vertonghen.

I know it's just youtube but he looks shit hot!

Edit: A bit of Lady Gaga thrown in for effect.

As a thoroughly modern football fan, I'll base my opinion of Vertonghen on the fact he is shit on Football Manager. Somewhere equal with Demichelis.

He's meant to be good in real life though, but I try and avoid that.

Not sure the Vertonghen stuff is real. He's gonna cost serious money and I don't know if we will spend that on a defender this summer.

We need a defender, definitely, but I'm not convinced we need a first choice one. Someone about as good as Mertesacker for a quarter of the price of Vertonghen would be fine.

Why do we need a defender?

Vertonghen seems to be a bit of a utility player. I've seen him play holding midfield for Belgium (when they had Vermaelen and Kompany at centre back), and he normally plays centre back for Ajax. Can play left-back too I think.

I can't see us being in for him, personally.

Personally I think we are fine at the back. Djourou is 4th choice centre back. I don't think you will get many better centre backs happy to be fourth choice. However Rev is right about Squilaci being near the pitch this season. This musn't be repeated.

I don't think Squillaci will even be at the club next season, unless he doesn't give a fuck and just wants to sit around doing a Winston Bogarde. And even if he is, I can't see him being ahead of Miquel in the pecking order.

Not many clubs have a better fourth choice centre back than Djourou, when he's in anything approaching decent form. Arguably Man Utd (Jones), Chelsea (Ivanovic) and Spurs (Dawson). That's about it IMO.

I read Vertonghen will have one year left on his contract this summer

Therefore won't cost a 'fortune'

Can play CB

Can play LB

Can play as a holding midfielder

Can be a leader on the pitch even if he's not the captain

Is in a different league compared to Djourou and Squillaci

Is better than Mertersacker and of course Miquel

How often are all our defenders fit at the same time

Right up AW's street if you ask me

Agree that Djourou was in fine form last year. He hasn't been bad when played in his correct position this season either, and when he's fit (and not being played at right-back) I actually rate him quite highly.

Maybe it's just this fine run of form and the nice weather, but I'm back to being really rather positive about both the rest of this season and next, but there are still a lot of 'ifs' around; 'if' van Persie stays, and 'if' we get Podolski (or a similar caliber alternative), and maybe Vertongen (who I'd be pleased to see arrive, for reasons mentioned above), a holding midfielder and goalkeeper, then we actually look in pretty decent shape*, with good players (and cover) in just about every position.

* I will absolutely take any and all of this back when the first borderline unbelieveable (and yet utterly predictable) injury crisis happens in September, incidentally.

I wonder if Joel Campbell will get his work permit. Throw in him and Miyachi and there's a couple of very talented youngsters on the fringes. Afobe is very highly thought of and Frimpong surely can't get injured again.

All this positivity is making me nervous...

Not sure what your point is with that comment? If you mean to say we went to shit towards the end of last season, I'd argue a significant reason for that was the dislocated shoulder Djourou suffered in March.

Your significant reason we collapsed was injuries to the defence, but we don't need a defender?

I (somehow) keep on forgetting about Miyaichi. If Frimpong comes back slightly less mental* then he and Coquelin are good cover in midfield too.

It is just high-quality upgrades and decent cover we're looking for really, isn't it? The strikeforce remains a concern whenever (and if) RvP isn't there, but otherwise we're okay just so long as we don't have the kind of frankly insane injury situation (again) which, for example, has all four of your fullbacks injured at once...

* at the moment I think he's a decent bet for being the reason we're reduced to ten men three times a season, assuming he plays regularly enough.

If this bluster about M'Vila has anything to it then I can't see how Frimpong will get a chance at Arsenal. Luckily for him, it's almost certainly bollocks.

If we sign M'Vila I'll do...Something. But we won't.

Be a nice signing though.

So it looks like Podolski is very much in the bag.

Podolski to Arsenal update. Deal is basically done but Cologne have asked to delay announcement for fear of fans' backlash. They lost....6-1 last w'kend and don't want to reveal loss of talisman yet. They'll have a departure press conference soon, nearer end of season

https://twitter.com/#!/JamesOlley

Let's just hope he doesn't get injured.

Plenty of time for that next season.
