What was really annoying was that I didn't even think Milan were that good, we were just horrible. The lack of Fabregas really shows in games like this.

Yeah it really did. Arteta has been a great signing, but he's probably made the step up to regular Champions League football a few years too late. He's hardly the biggest issue though when you look around him. I mean, Rosicky could still be out there now with a ball once everyone's gone home and he still couldn't hit the target and Ramsey is seriously off form and physically exhausted. Everything about his game looks tired.

That we were batted aside with such ease must be a huge concern to Wenger. He must know in his heart of hearts we're a worse team than last year, and each subsequent season for about seven years now come to that, but I don't think he honestly thought we were this bad.

I really hope this doesn't fuck up the rest of the season, but judging by previous years it's bound to. Bloody hell we need to spend some money.

Swapping Wenger for Mourinho seems vaguely possible based on wanky tabloids.

But...I think he'll go of his own volition now. I've always said it'll be down to Wenger to decide when time's up and I think that'll be the end of the season unless things go brilliantly from now on. He just looked forlorn for most of the match - he didn't look like he even noticed that we'd lost.

Who should be spending it? Would you trust Wenger to use the money or would you like to see a fresh face?

Wenger is nothing if not a steady hand and you'd have to believe if he had the funds to compete at the top level then he could build the team he wants. He's tried to get enough good/expensive signings in over the last few years, but our bids have been comically short in one way or another, so you'd have to assume that it's not his lack of desire that's meant we've ended up with a pretty weak squad. At this stage then Wenger is obviously the best man for the job as he's proven he can do OK with next to no money, and sometimes less than that.

Someone needs to get that cunt Kronke to spill the beans on what he's up to. Although it's fanciful to suggest he's actually going to verbalise his intentions of making a shit load of money out of us at the expense of the team, but there you go. It just seems like we've scrimped and saved all these years for all the money we'll eventually end up making to just get thrown into a greedy millionaire's burgeoning pile of cash. It undermines the entire point of the new stadium and really for all the tangible advantages it will offer we might as well not of bothered.

Kronenk isn't going to put a penny in while Usmanov is still on the board.

Every performance like this is one more nail in the van Persie coffin. He'd be mental to sign a new contract with us if that's the best we can muster in a Champions League knock out tie.

Every time we put a few wins together, we encounter a result like this which completely knocks the wind out of us.

Usmanov isn't on the board. He won't be granted a seat unless he get's 30% of the shares. At least I think that's right.

Fair enough. He owns above 29%, which I assume he'll stick on, as wouldn't he have to offer for all the shares if he goes above 30? Regardless, Kroenke isn't going to put any money in to the club when almost a third of it is owned by a guy he is in complete conflict with. In that sense I can't blame him. But clearly us as fans are being taken for a ride by this power struggle going on.

Seeing as this tie is almost over now, would you guys rather have dropped into the Europa from the group stages or would you still prefer to not have the embarrassment of channel 5?

We've not got a squad deep enough to compete in Europe. So personally I'm happier either winning the big one (which seems probably a little unlikely) or going out. The Euro AshTray or whatever it's called these days isn't worth losing players for.

pitch was awful but didn't stop them getting 4 and you don't have to be a genius to work out don't keep trying intricate passing on the bits of the pitch where the freshly planted spuds are.

amongst our many failings I really think not only do the players lack heart, leadership and hunger but they are all simply a bit thick.

this obsession with being a knock off Barca has to end too, its like we've looked at the fact they pass it a lot and have high possession so think simply doing the same is enough, irrespective of the fact we move it so slowly and with so little movement around the ball carrier.

You are? Seems normal to me. We keep the ball ok against most teams, it's just we struggle sometimes to do anything worthwhile with it. We are still playing this Barca-ish style, only really not very well. I don't think we have the personnel for it and it probably needs a rethink.

That said this is the same team that won away so Sunderland and tonked Blackburn. Yes there was a gulf in class, yes we have declined since last year, but let's not ignore that the team had a stinker from front to back. We don't and won't play like such cunts every week.

Some tiny, tiny crumb of not consolation but something like that....

Mirror hack John Cross just tweeted this:

Even at 4 down, Arsenal fans singing loudly. Away support should never be confused with home support. #afc fans were only heroes last night.

AFC away fans are fucking legends. Chalk and cheese with the home support.

Oh God, thanks for reminding me of this, Arseblog

Arsene Wenger called it ‘shocking’ and ‘our worst ever night in Europe’. Personally, I still think the worst night was that one in 2004 when Wayne Bridge’s goal knocked us out

I agree though. That game against Chelsea was infinitely more gutting than last night, because that was the year we could and should have won the Champion's League. It was an absolute fucking heartbreaker and I can still remember how sick I felt afterwards. Last night isn't even close. Eurgh.

What all the major disappointments have in common is the crushing low after the giddying high. The sort of thing that feels like it's being scripted. Last night had none of that because it was neither a surprise that we weren't very good or that we were never in the game. The same amount of agony was spread over 90 minutes into small, manageable chunks.
