It was a completely inconsequential match - winning would have been a useful 3 points, but that's all. On the same weekend Liverpool messed up entirely, Chelsea are proving that they're fallible again, and Spurs have shown that if they lose one player they're made to look unimpressive.

Inconsequential? We've got the mother of all fights to get into the CL next season and when our direct rivals slip up, again, we actually end up falling even further behind the top four. How on earth was it inconsequential? Have we thrown the towel in?

I could not disagree more. It's our 8th league defeat this season, our third on the bounce in the league. We are 5 points off the champions league places and 10 points behind them. The manager made a pretty disastrous substituion, the fans seem to have had enough of him and all he could say was "I don't have to justify myself to you". It is far from inconsequential in my opinion.

EDIT: Arseblog agrees:

I fully accept there are people that would like to see a change in management. I suspect after yesterday that number has grown, but for all his stubbornness (which used to be one of his greatest assets, let’s not forget) to see the crowd turn on him like that was unpleasant. It felt like something of a watershed moment. End of days, kind of stuff.

The reality is there’s a lot of football left this season and we’ve got no choice but to pick ourselves up and get on with it. You do wonder if a line has been crossed, if it’s gone too far to ever be the same again, but in the short-term winning some games would make things a little better. That’s where we’re at.

And we need to spend millions because we conceded one crappy goal after 80 minutes against the defending champions? Fuck off.

Eh? Other teams dropping points was a chance for us to narrow the gap but instead we fucked it up. It was nothing short of a very bad loss for the club. There are no positives to take from it.

Why are you talking about Spurs? Spurs can do whatever they want, we won't get near them this season so whatever they (or Man City) do is of no consequence to us. Our aim is 4th and the clubs we are competing for 4th are Liverpool & Chelsea. With them both dropping some points it was essential we won yesterday.

And yes we do need to spend millions of pounds. The squad must be competitive again.

From the MotD highlights, I didn't think Rosicky looked too bad. He did well to make the goal and certainly seemed less of a liability in midfield than Song.

Can't fault his effort, he's a busy player and he tried creating chances and even attempted a few long range drives himself. But Walcott can't read the game so whatever Tomas tried with Theo was pointless.

How many teams are going to take 3 points off Man Utd? City, obviously. And Newcastle and Blackburn have so far, but everyone else has failed. Getting anything off them is bonus points, we didn't get any, c'est la vie.

There is one thing being a bit annoyed, but wanting to turn into Chelsea and Man City because we couldn't hold on for a point is just rubbish.

You're attempting to paper over the cracks just a little there Rev ;)

Besides, we apparently spent £15 million on OC, thats "millions" :)

We also sold two or three players iirc.

I hope this doesn't come off as trolling since I'm a United fan, but do you think it was realistic going into the game that you considered it 'essential to win'? I haven't been particularly pleased with some of what's happened with United this season, but I think the truth is that United have a better squad than Arsenal and would have been considered favourites to win by most yesterday. I don't think losing 2-1 represents a disaster. You were the better team for spells in the second half, United hardly played you off the pitch, Van Persie missed a practically open goal and a header was cleared off the line in the last minute. And it's easy to make Arshavin the scapegoat, but I didn't notice OC doing much defending.

I understand that you felt it was important to make up ground on Liverpool and Chelsea dropping points, but I don't think it represents a disaster that you didn't manage to do so against United, nor do I agree that there were no positives to take from the game.

We were looking good for a draw, so we should definitely scrap the manager, team philosophy and spend £250m on players. Ideally this week.

Nobody is really saying that. The manager made a shit sub, we are struggling to finish in the top four and the team could do with a (some?) fresh faces.

Is that so outrageous?

We have been massively bummed by the unprecedented situation of having all four full backs out at once with mid-to-long-term injuries. Djourou has been mostly terrible at right-back, particularly yesterday, and Vermaelen was badly at fault for both United's goals I'm afraid. I won't slaughter those guys because they probably hate having to play there. It's a really hard situation and one I can't easily come up with a solution to.

We're not in a position where we can chuck money at a full back who we won't need again in a few weeks. It is exceptionally unlucky, make no mistake, and it's cost us dear.

I'm sure the talk of billionaires is because we want to get a left-back in on loan. I'm sure "looking at Wenger" is just to tell him he looks a bit silly in that coat.

And every team that's name doesn't start with Manchester is struggling to finish in the top 4. People who think Spurs are nailed on are being ridiculous, two injuries (or one jailed manager) and they'll struggle for top 7.

Literally no one on here has said anything of the sort.

I think we need another forward, ideally one who can play as a winger as well as a false nine. We're obviously not going to get one in January, but that's what we need, and I'd argue that we need it rather urgently if we're to haul in Chelsea.

We also really need the manager to be a bit more tactically flexible. It's the same formation, tactics and substitutions every single week regardless of where we're playing or who we're playing against. That has been a problem for a long time now.

Don't worry, you are not trolling. All our games are essential to win if we hope to climb the table. We all knew Man United would be difficult, but we really could have come away with at least a point. We were on the ascendency after the equaliser so who knows what could have happened?

There's no point dwelling on it for too much longer. We have Villa on Sunday in the cup. Wenger said he's going to take the FA Cup seriously this season (despite resting our top scorer in the last tie) so I'm hoping he'll be able to put out a decent side.

Spurs are playing decent footy. Even if Mr Puffy Face goes to jail I'm sure they'll still be good for at least 3rd.

I don't think he's got a lot of choice over whether he puts out a decent side, with injuries/ACN. He's only got one side's worth of players.

They are, but they've got more or less no depth at all. Adebayor doesn't even have to get injured, all he needs to do is get into a huff about something and they've got no strikers at all. They've got a first 11 and nothing more.

Yeah Spurs have been extremely fortunate with injuries it seems. Defoe did absolutely fuck all yesterday apart from put away a total gift, and miss a sitter (and it was a sitter, sorry. His slow reactions and weird run angle were what messed him up).

They will potentially struggle badly if they get a couple of injuries and Adebayor goes off the boil for whatever reason.

On the plus side Chamberlain does look the business, lets hope he gets more games in the coming weeks. He's the exactly kind of direct attacking player we need right now.

Does anyone have any idea on when Wilshere, Sagna, Arteta or any of the other full backs will be back from injury?

Wenger's View - The Official Manager's Email - 23 January

Dear Arsenal supporter,

I am really disappointed about Sunday's defeat against Manchester United because we showed exceptional spirit in the second half.

The players gave a fantastic response after a nervous first half when we were not at the required technical level. We were much better after half time and I thought we had the chances to win the game comfortably.

It was important not to make a mistake with our tactics or concentration levels and we were caught out at a time where I felt we looked the most likely winners. Man United took advantage and you feel they are slightly more mature than us in every position at the moment.

Having battled like we did only to come out with nothing is very difficult to take.

The fans made their feelings known when I replaced Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and they are free to express their emotions because they pay for their tickets. We cannot dictate to people how they behave.

However, I believe I made the right decision by starting Alex. When I took him off he had started to feel some fatigue and had stretched his calf. He was also ill during the week.

The result leaves us in a very difficult position because we couldn't afford to lose. But there were also a lot of positives to take - the way we responded in the second half for example.

What is clear is that we need our injured players back. When you see what we created in the second half without them it was promising, but we need a fit and healthy squad as soon as possible.

Thanks for your support.

Arsène Wenger
