Tracer's Slightly Advanced Cs Tactics

In this topic I shall attempt to explain to you the finer points of Counter-Strike, updating this first post as I go. If you feel like posting in here, make it constuctive so no nr style 'omg counter-strike is so cool, I remember this one time in an english lesson I teabagged dave'. Most of these suggestions are more relevant for matches, but when applied to a public server they will work well also.

So, here we go. Any decent additions will be added up here. Note that these are just my suggestions, I haven't gone over these with anyone

1 When planting the bomb, plant it in the open.

Theres two of you left on your team, and you plant the bomb behind a box (a good example being on cbble, at the bombsite which ISNT the ct spawn). Your team mate is on the other side of the map. You die, leaving the ct's to go round the back of the box and defuse. Your team mate comes running up, but has to cover the extra ground to get round behind the box to get a clear shot in.

Imagine you had planted in front of the boxes and had died. When your team mate shows up, he has a clear shot at the defusers, who are gonna be busy defusing. You can pick them off and save the day. Planting in an open area also allows you to snipe the bomb from a distance.

Basically, plant somewhere that is going to make the defusing person an easy target. Another good place is on top of boxes.

2 Once the bomb is planted, get out of the bomb site.

You've planted the bomb, and scarpered off a bit (an example being hiding in the tunnels on dust2 after planting at B). Ct's come in, look around see no-one and start a defuse. You're now free to catch them off guard, one of their number is defusing so with enough people on your team they are at a disdvantage. Also, being out of the bombsite allows you to react to any attacks earlier, if they're doing a two pronged assault on the bombsite and you delay one of the prongs, you gain an advantage.

3 Look over the top of boxes

The boxes at the back of A on dust and the box on the T side of the bridge on Aztec are just short enough that (if you press yourself right up against it) you can make out the opposing teams head above the box. With an awp you can do some serious destroying of peoples brains. Also works well with the AK and M4.

4 Pick up any awps you find

This one is relative to clan matches. If you come across an awp on the floor at the end of a round, pick it up. They are so expensive that its mad to not pick one up of the floor if its there. You can give it to an awper on your team, saving them money.

5 Don't make lots of noise

A little known fact (as far as I can tell) is that if you press shift you walk. You make no noise thus making it harder for the enemy to see where you are. Other examples of noise are grenades. A Speculative grenade is great when there are loads of people still alive, because your'e likely to hit someone round a corner at a choke point, but imagine you are the last person on your team and the entire other team are looking for you. Throwing any kind of grenade is going to give away your position, so think before you throw, this leads us on to....

6 Use grenades properly

I see so many people throwing HE grenades into nothingness, basically pissing away your most powerful weapon. If you're gonna throw one, make sure you will hit someone with it.

Flashbangs are great, but if you throw one to flash someone, chase them down afterward. A common sight is someone throwing a flash, waiting for the effects of the flash to wear off on their opponent and then chasing them down, NOT CLEVER :(

If you know that there is more than one enemy, throw two. Sometimes people are wise enough to look away, and the effects of the flash are short-lived. Throwing the second one usually catches the rest off-guard.

Smoke grenades are my favourite. You can do so much with a smoke nade its that COOL. IF you plan to use a smoke grenade to deal with a sniper, throw it nearer to them than you. Throwing a smoke nade just in front of yourself doesn't help much, as the sniper will see you coming out. Throwing it in their face effectively removes their long rage ability. Smoke's can also be used as distractions. Every single round that I play as a T on dust2 I throw a smoke over the top of the double door area to the right. This eventually lands in Long A, creating a nice smokey area. Now, what are the CT's to think? is there someone coming? They have to watch just in case there is.

additional from Onion

Check your radar before throwing a grenade, this will avoud team flashing and accidental team explosion!

7 (from Mchugh) Check out your surroundings

Knowing which team mates are around you will give you an early warning system to someone sneaking up on you. Example, I'm walking along and I have FAF next to me. If we split up a bit so I can go plant or whatever, and he dies, I know that the enemy is nearby. I should be more alert to the prospect of attack.

addition from daveodeath

Keep an eye on the radar blips. For clan matches this is a must, nothing s more annoying than trying to decifer the various accents on TS or CS comms. Where a teammate died gives you a rough gist of where the enemy is, what direction they are facing and what the enemy player is equiped with.

8 (from FAF) attacking a sniper

If you don't have the ability to flank a sniper, then run at them, sidestepping the whole time. Fire off a shot now and again from your AK/M4, but leave enough so that you can spray them when close up. Most snipers wil bug out if an enemy is getting close, leaving you to shoot them in the back.

9 (from Onion) Wasting Ammo.

Don't shoot or chuck grenades immediately as the round begins. It's a pointless waste. And annoying. And risks an accidental spawn kill. And, on a small map, tells the opponents what you're carrying (especially true of the AWP).

10 The knife is king

The knife is the fastest weapon to run with (after the scout). If you have to get somewhere in a rush, don't run with your rifle equipped. Get the knife out, you'll go alot faster. This is helpful for rushes, as you'll keep up with your team and beat your opponent to the choke point. The right click attack with the knife is stronger than the left click, so use it. A knife from behind is mostly fatal.

11 (from Onion) Aiming properly

Learn to aim at head height, this will give you an advantage in a fire fight as you'll get headshots more often.

12 (from Spafe) Fake defusals

You get to the bomb, but theres two T's left and you can't see them. Do a fake defuse (press E then release it allowing you to shoot again). With any luck the T's will come running at you after having heard the defuse noise, revealing themselves allowing you to kill them.

13 Don't defuse something you can't

Learn to listen to the beeps of the bomb. If its beeping rapidly and you haven't started to defuse it (and you have no defuse kit) leave it, save your equpiment. You'll get more money in the long run as you will have less to buy next round. On a similar note, buy a defuse kit every round, its foolish not to.

14 Running backwards whilst shooting

DON'T

It's a not commonly known fact that running backwards whilst firing cocks up your aim. The amount of people who do this is shocking.

Anyway, hope these are helpful, lemme know if they're just COMPLETELY WRONG.

Peace out

Tracer

this seems really obvious to me but i see people fail to pick up on it all the time: when people on your team are close by, check out who they are (by looking at them) and then watch out for them getting killed. this gives you an indication as to where the enemy is or where they are coming from.

I'd high five you, but you had a poo earlier and i reckon you didn't wash tbh

Just to add to the flashbang advice: If you know that there are more than one enemy, throw two. Sometimes people are wise enough to look away, and the effects of the flash are short-lived. Throwing the second one usually catches the rest off-guard.

Also, don't bother throwing a flash at a sniper unless you are either very close, or you have a definite reason for doing so. Flashing a sniper, and then running straight at them over open ground will get you killed quickly.

Another sniper tip: If you don't have the ability to flank a sniper, then run at them, sidestepping the whole time. Fire off a shot now and again from your AK/M4, but leave enough so that you can spray them when close up.

Most snipers wil bug out if an enemy is getting close, leaving you to shoot them in the back (although this isn't a guarantee - I'll most likely stay there and trade shots with my scout, or charge at you :( ).

What about that round the other night when I was the last T left on Aztec, decided to just run up the ramp, checked the room, then bunged a grenade round the corner taking someone out! Class that was...

Oh and what about, planting the bomb if you're in a bombsite, I see (and have been guilty of it myself) of the bomber running to the bombsite, then running off to get kills rather than actually planting the bomb!

Not the sort of tactic we're on about here.

I've got a few points, but I'm not sure if they're relevant enough to go in there.

When planting on top of or near boxes beware that CTs can defuse throught the box, so make sure you cover every possible position. One CT managed to beat two Ts on Aztec the other night by defusing through a box.

Another thing, which may be a bit amateurish and probably a situation that you won't get into, is that if you find yourself out of ammo in a firefight, chuck a flash on the ground and hide and reload. It's not that reliable, and you might not wanna use a flash in this way if you've only got one, but it has helped me a few times.

You may want to put something about blocking in there, but I don't think it'sreally a problem for anyone around here.

Last thing, Gbear's point is harder now, seeing as there's a delay on seeing people's names. You might wanna make it clear to the people around you that you are who you are as well as finding out who they are.

i did that the other day and it worked really well, but instead of reloading i managed to avoid getting *too* blind, and actually managed to knife them whilst they were still blind ;) cant remember who it was, but it was a regular like faf or someone.

Planting the Bomb:

If you have to plant the bomb without backup, plant where ur well hidden. Even if your the last player left on your team, you'll still get extra cash for your side just for the plant.

Keep an eye on the radar blips

probably obvious but I'll add it anyways:

- Have a button on your mouse or kb nearby, which switches to pistol. if you are up close to an enemy and your clip runs out, switch to pistol and calmly shoot them in the head. I've seen so many people running around reloading that m4 or whatever who just get wasted.

- Bomb tips (which I learnt from Faf I think):

On Prodigy, shoot the windows of that site near the CT spawn, plant on the window sill and hide up the vent. usually you can snipe from the top of the ladder at any CTs defusing and if you stay quiet they won't know you're there.

On Dust 2, when planting at A, go to the corner wall of the raised bombsite, and plant on the very edge of the zone. then run down Long A and sit down that ramp. you should be able to clearly see the bomb and snipe any Cts attempting to defuse.

- with smoke, I found that you can sit in a smoke cloud and see people on the other side, but they can't reallys ee you. this could be helpful, I dunno.

- use the radar!!! keep an eye out for where your team is dying, cover holes in the line etc

- save your nades until the end of the round. although they give your position away, when it's 1 on 1 or whatever, the last thing the other person suspects you to have left is an HE or FB, so it can be crucial in winning.

Radar ! people dont seem to use it much.

And related to this, tell peeps on your team where you are going, where you encounter enemies etc - this is the main thing i have noticed on the Rllmuk server - no-body gives position. This can help to get your team to where the bomb is being planted or you will know roughly where someone was when they died.

I have for years had pistol on scroll up and main firearm on scroll down on the mouse wheel. This is good for fast changes mid firefight.

1. Wasting Ammo.

Don't shoot or chuck grenades immediately the round begins. It's a pointless waste. And annoying. And risks an accidental spawn kill. And, on a small map, tells the opponents what you're carrying (especially true of the AWP).

2. Grenades and the radar.

Check the radar before you throw. Friendly fire grenade kills because you couldn't be bothered to look where your team mates are really suck.

3. Running with rifles

Switch to a pistol, grenade, or knife if you're running somewhere in a hurry. You go faster. This is important at the start of the round.

4. Don't look at the ground

Lots of people run about looking at the ground a little way in front of them. Learn to run with the cross hair at head height. If you meet a baddie.. boom.. they're dead from a headshot (using a Deagle a close range headshot is instant death).

5. The quick buy thing

In the buy menu there are 4 slots that you can configure with different set ups (well, 8 actually, 4 T and 4 CT). I've got mine configured based on my level of money. So my first slot is armour, pistol, secondary ammo. Next one up is armour, submachine gun. Next is armour, rifle. And finally armour, pistol, rifle, grenades. Works well for me.

I have one too.

As a CT when going to defuse the bomb and you know that at least one T is alive and the bomb site is clear you can almost guarantee that they'll be doing tactic number 2. So therefor I find it useful to just tap use to start defusing and then look away and see if anyone comes out to catch you 'off guard'. It's not foolproof but can be useful for a safe defuse.

Also, probably pretty obvious, but if you've got an M4 or a USP try to use your silencer well. ie. if you're coming from where the enemy won't expect you, just screw on your silencer and there's a lot less chance that they'll realise you're there if you miss. Same thing with if there are only two people left.

I find the "head sticking up over boxes" only really works against cts, as they have the head model with a helmet, so their head sticks up more. Same hitboxes tho.

I find it works best with the scout, as M4 headshots don't kill in one :o and AK is a little innaccurate sometimes. Useful in Aztec for me ;)

M4 headshots do kill in one don't they :o ? Isn't the AK perfectly accurate when using 2-3 bullet bursts ;) ?
