Is The Next-gen Gaming For Everyone?

I believe that sony made ps1 to appeal to a wider audience, it did succeed in doing so but bringing more gamers to the market doesnt mean revolutionising the way games are being played. What exactly new did ps1 games have that others did not? Which was the first real 3d game? which console had first the analog stick? which one had first vibrating controllers? Give me a break n64 has brought the greatest revolution to video games. It was and it is the best console of all time.

Well, the N64 didn't have Gran Turismo for a start (or any realistic racing game that can compare)... or Tekken (or any beat-em-up that can compare, oh but the Saturn did)... or Final Fantasy (oh yeah Square took their series away from Nintendo because Nintendo insisted on using carts).

No matter how you look at it, the N64 was a failure. Pure and simple. The Super NES did far far better than the N64 could ever hope to do.

I just dont agree, because I believe that if there is a market for such games (and there blatantly is) there will always be devco's making said titles.

the market you are talking about is shrinking, gamers want games that differ from those that were once the top titles. Dood is right the big franchise games are going to rule in the next gen.

Ps1 didnt have sm64 or any platformer that could come close,

it lacked any simulation that could rival pilotwings,

or something that could be similar to goldeneye.

Obviously that market isnt shrinking, as you both want to see quirky games.

Correct.

If you want to turn this into a console war, all anyone has to do is show you some sales figures, and off we go!

Regardless, the N64 was a great console, but it wasnt anywhere near as revolutionary as the PSX. It built upon the Playstations success, and created its own market.

It was a decent enough business model, but failed at its own marketing!

Well exactly, we could go on all day about how this console did this and which console didn't have that. But if we were talking about sales, then we all know which was the more popular console, in ALL territories.

But the fact is, I'd be more than worried with what Nintendo are supposedly planning. They've been pretty off the ball since the N64 days, compared to Sony and Microsoft, although Microsoft have had it difficult with their first console, they did do one good thing, the Xbox Live! thing was brilliant. I'm sure you'd buy Nintendo regardless, but lets hope it doesn't turn into another GameCube, cos that isn't exactly blessed with a whole load of killer games.

Well, it has about as many as the Xbox and PS2, in my eyes. It's not about the machines (and hey, lets not go there, cos there is no 'best'), its about those marketing cunts who put a dollarsign on anything they can shove down johnny publics throat.

I realise the really 'gamey' games I like will always be made, but they will definatley become fewer and futher between..

The greatest problem with nintendo is marketing plus the fact that it doesnt follow the technology in some ways. I mean the lack of dvd playback was a drwaback for gcn, but i dont think that this is what made gcn's sales look bad, it's the fact that from a point of view it offered a machine that was similar to the others, same tecnology, same controller ( in general). If ninty isnt going to offer the greatest revolution with rev then its going to be bad for them. Although i believe they can still make profit from the avid fans, if they want to appeal to a wider gaming market, they should make something very bright.
