And apparently its Roo and not Ryu.

Aye... What's the deal there?

That was a bit of bombshell... Have I really been mispronouncing the fella's name for MY WHOLE LIFE or is that kid just a bit 'backward?' After all of the grief I've given my mate for a certain "Zang-geoff" incident I hope it's the latter.

Time for a 'Videogame Character-Name Pronunciation Guide' sticky in ATF? :P

Nah it is promounced 'Riiyu' but I always remember the fights we all had when we were younger in pronouncing it.

That and my mate thought it was Mr. Bison and not M.Bison!

What this place really needs is a 'thank fuck for that' smiley. I almost had to switch over to Ken. Oh yes... I'm one of those players.

I love this, but for all of the wrong reasons. I mean... Bloody hell... In the 90s it would have been a near impossible task to find any kids who weren't genuinely excited by the prospect of the home conversions. Seems Capcom managed to find a SHITLOAD of them, though.

"This is the best, I play it every chance I get!"

Also: Mr. Bison. :P

It is Mr Bison. In Japan, the M in M. Bison stood for Mike (who turned into Balrog in the west) - but I've always pronounced the M instead of saying Mister for the US versions, on account of Mister sounding totally gay.

I knew about the Bison -> Balrog thing, but never heard our 'Bison' called 'Mister.' The number of figures and stuff being referenced as 'Mister Bison' that a Google search spits out suggests it could well be true though. ;)

Am I right in thinking that, 'World vs Japan,' the bosses are:

Balrog - M. Bison

Vega - Balrog

M. Bison - Vega

?

Never sure if their Vega is Poncy McFenceclimber, like ours, or Redsuit McBossfella. :D

...because they thought a certain M. Tyson would sue over likeness rights in the West, if you want to know the reason behind the name changes.

Although i'm tempted to use the names Poncy McFenceclimber and Redsuit McBossfella form now on :D

Yeah, Street Fighter I. He was one of the American opponents, I think you fought him in a train station. Or was his name Joe?

Actually there was a Mike. And a Joe for that matter.

Admittedly it's hard to care since the game was so chuff. Fighting Street was much better.

From the 'Strategy' Section....

'These moves will work regardless of the direction your character is facing!'

Classic

Ah, but these were simpler times. Frequently, you'd get people playing that totally didn't know the game, and didn't know what we all take for granted today - knowing to sweeps low and top-downs/jump-ins high. Doesn't hurt to spell things out for prospective buyers of the home game that may only have tried it a couple of times before.

That said, the advanced techniques in the vid weren't all that advanced. Although showing all the twattish links that you could do in that game could well put people off! ;)

Oh man... I miss the arcades. :(

That was the fantastic/humiliating thing back in the day. You learnt all of the little tricks and quirks really quickly because you didn't have a choice... You either sussed it or got your arse handed to you in 10 seconds flat. There's only so many batches of 30p a schoolkid can stand to let themself lose! ;)

To contrast that with today: I didn't have a clue just how deep a game VF4 Evo was before I played it against someone who was a bit handy. I thought I was pretty good but soon got proved wrong by someone with a far better understanding of the game. Slapped down. Hard. As silly as it sounds, I miss getting pwn3d. :P

Edit: I miss the huge anticipation of the home releases for stuff, too. I think that's why I keep repeating this video. The excitement of finally getting to see the original SNES version in action has still to be beaten. There's a game that threatened a few friendships... :D
