King Kong - Thread

I can see them giving him a gargantuan golden statue come the awards. Kind of like a Konged-out version of the whole "seven wee statues" gesture they offered to Walt Disney on the back of Snow White.

Well. That's what they should be doing.

Not going to happen, not this year anyway. Not so much to do with his performance being aided by animators (as much as I appreciate the guy's work, it seems the animators are often getting looked over in this movie) but this year there are so many typical Oscar contenders (Capote, Brokeback Mountain, Walk The Line etc).

Other than the technical achievements, I don't see Kong getting a look in this year.

It wouldnt get a look in any year, afterall it is just a monster movie. Not the type of film the Academy recognises, I mean it was amazing that LotR got the awards it did as the academy usually snubs fantasy films as well. ^_^

saw this last night

as a turn off the brain and watch the cool stuff happen, it was a good film. i wanted to see the big monkey fight the big lizards and wrech stuff and i was happy.

as for the storyline

the only way my twisted brain can describe it is as a bestiality flick for girls written by girls and edited by the bbc. lots of longing gazes into the eyes from both chimp and chick with beautiful vistas in the background, but they never seal the deal

Well I'm desperate for a bit of attention so here goes, it was shit. Saying that in here makes me feel like R. Kelly performing at an LAPD christmas party, but I really didn't like it and I don't think it worked on any level. It does prove one thing though. Vemsie you really are mental. :o

The CGI, good or bad, there was just so much of it and some of it was poorly used. The characters were bland and flat, I felt more connection to the CGI Kong than any of the real actor's characters. I like Jack Black but he was wrong for the part, it hurt to see him trying so hard to constrain himself. Naomi Watts isn't a very good actress (IMO) and Brody had nothing to work with. Jimmy? You can't really blame the actors too much as most of the dialogue very poor leaving them totally in Jackson's hands, it seems his attention was elsewhere. The action was good, but again too much of it negated any impact, it seemed like the movie existed only to facilitate the set pieces. Someone gets a cup of coffee? Time for another set piece with a wonky (but yet fun) kitchen. It didn't stir anything in me, it's an indulgent, empty movie. Hollywood has come a long way in 70 years.

The best thing was Kyle Chandler and his quick exists at the slightest sniff of trouble.

As an adventure movie (theme park movie?) it wasn't as good as something like Pirates of the Caribbean or Jurassic Park, I'd liken it more to Titanic, which was better than Kong.

The most unnecessary movie I've ever seen.

Why didn't they teach Naomi Watts to juggle, rather than using appaling CGI and flappy wrists?

Huh!? She really didn't juggle? I'll have to look out for that next time I watch it.

and the CGI obviously wasn't appaling if i watching it twice in the cinema and didn't have an inkling it was fake.

I didn't know the juggling was fake either! Mind you, I was probably too busy imagining Watts in various outrageous sexual postions to notice.

Anyone know what Jackson is going to direct (so no 'Halo movie!' shouts, please. He's just produceer on that) next?

I hate the King Kong story, think of it as an unnecessary remake and, although I loved LOTR it wasn't new material. When's he going to go back to making original stuff?

bought this today, watched it in two sittings. much better on the second viewing, where did those strange people from the island disappear to in the second half of the film.

They went to a mythical place known as 'Deleted Scenes' probably. Either that or they just bottled it and stayed in their caves for the rest of the film.

They tried to pole vault across the ocean to a neighbouring island to buy Crunchy Nut Cornflakes, but their poles snapped and they drown.

As far as I know this will follow the Lord of the Rings route with the definitive version no doubt being with us for Christmas.

Is it true the version out now has no DTS mix?

Thats not been confirmed yet though, Jackson has said that he would like to release an extended cut (and that he is keeping the commentary for that version) but its upto Universal to decide if they want to release it. Hopefully they will.

I was kind of hoping he'd release a shorter version. :o

If that's true, it all sounds rather dubious to me.

The extended versions of LOTR did extremely well when they were released so why would Universal be wondering whether or not to release an extended Kong set? My cynical side thinks that due to Kong under performing at the cinema, they are looking to make as much possible on DVD so rush out a fairly plain release with the notion that no extended editions other are forthcoming. Get people to buy that one, rake in the sales then announce a souped up version.

Something I admired about New Line's approach to the LOTR:EE is that they were announced right from the beginning so you knew whether or not you should wait.

Although, even if there was a extended edition of Kong, I doubt I'd buy it. Firstly, it felt bloated as it was so no real need for any more stuff and secondly, the web diaries that were online were quite extensive. Other than the commentary, is there really that much more to be known about the film?

I'd buy it. There was a lot left out of the production diaries - obviously for spoiler reasons. I'd like another documentary that followed the production in detail and of course the commentaries. I even wouldn't mind the film being longer. It's a day-off wallow of a film... and like the LotR films it's long but I never find it boring.

I saw this today and I was very unimpressed. It's too long, too many irrelevant scenes and the bits with her being thrown around like a ragdoll by Kong are just stupid. She would have broken her neck about 50 times before we even get half way through the film. I know it's not supposed to be realistic, but still.

That Jackson fella need someone to sit him down and teach him how to edit his films a bit.
