Tekken 5

For the first time this gen, I'm seriously considering purchasing a Tekken title. I loved Tekken 3, but both tag and four seemed like slow banal affairs, which were totally outclassed by Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter, and to a lesser extent, the DoA series.

I've heard good things about Tekken 5 though, so I'm just asking - to those who have played it - does it reclaim much of Tekken's lost glory, or is it a rental at best?

You'll love Tekken 5. It reclaims all the things that were great about the series: impressive new characters, corking visuals on the presentation side, and the timing's been sorted out. The combat is faster, good for chaining but various enough to not totally favour "telephone dialling" move players.

In other words, it's regained its balance, has great cutscenes and FMV, gorgeous backgrounds and is the best Tekken yet. In my opinion

Whats GoW like then? I've somehow managed to completely miss every single article about it ever publisised and I dont know the slightest thing about it... Which is very odd actually

Ninja Gaiden meets Prince of Persia and DMC comes along for the ride. From what I gather it's an excellent hack and slash platformer, which pushes the PS2 harder than most games out there.

Can't wait.

By 'sorted out the timing' do you mean it's combo buffer is a little less rigid in it's frame inputs? I swear I pressed the right buttons at exactly the right time with Jin, but the sodding combos never came out right.

I enjoyed it but I must admit it is over hyped.

Thing about T5, its whilst its the best version, its base mechanics feel exactly the same as they did in T2, so i'm bored of that and T5 doesn't really add much too it. Nice to see Gunjack back i guess.

Course, same could be levelled at any fighting series i suppose.

I think all 3D fighters need to move forward a bit - the need 'feel' more agressive and have true physical inertia so that a punch acts like a punch and doesn't spin you round 3 times, rather, bloodies your nose!

Nah, i meant 3D.

I want something with the punch of Knockout Kings 2005 but with full bloody martial arts, and the characters of Tekken.

If done right, it would be cool. Not sure how the hardcore moves would fit though (reversals and so forth). They could be implemented as combos work in KOK.

I'm not quite up to the technical standard to describe or comment on frame buffering, but I do know that chaining combos in this makes more sense than in TTT or 4. It's very fast, though, which I like. Makes it slightly more like a VF game, in that you don't have to just stand there absorbing a pummelling after your opponent begins his first hit in a series of twenty button presses. Combat's just faster and tighter, in my opinion. Great fun.

Having played competitively for a few weeks now, my only problems are with the walls on some arenas. People talk about Steve and Heihachi being broken too -and they kind of are- but if my opponent wants to play that game I can stick it back to them and usually more competently. It's not the same as getting stuck against a wall and being brutalised mercilessly. The only level with completely uneven walls in T4 was underground whereas there are a lot of such levels in T5 which mean if you get stuck against a wall you may as well be stuck in a corner. With time I'll learn how to minimise the damage in such situations though.

I bought this to play my Tekken 5 on, and its wonderful...

The game is great, and even includes the full arcade versions of Tekken 1, 2 and 3!

The visuals are probably the best on the PS2, and the sounds are awesome...you actually hear limbs cracking, blood splattering, its great!

God Of War is also great...I am about 4 hours into it ( I think its an 8 hour game) and im really enjoying it...

Think PoP:SoT meats Devil May Cry, with the best and most erotic greek story ever told...

The first boss, really is something to marvel at!

T5 is definitely in the visual league of the PS2's best accomplishments, yeah.

I have the Hori Soul Calibur 2 stick, which is awesomeness, too. I still play Tekken with a pad for some reason, though.

I think Tekken 5 is great if played in the right way, between a few people who haven't put hundreds and hundreds of hours into the game. If you play it in the arcade however, you'll find countless morons who'll constantly force you to block stupid chains that can be mixed up with different moves and variable timing. Also, you'll find that nobody ever takes any risks, it's safe moves all the way - the only time someone gets hit is down to a counter hit or halfway through a chain.

As someone who plays fighters to play them competitively, it's clear that this isn't the game for me. It's still good fun if you mostly play against the computer or a few friends though, which I suspect will be the case for most people.

Here are the quarters, semi-finals and finals from this year's SBO (Japan's biggest fighting game tourney).

Requires free registration, but it's well worth it. A good chance to check out high-level play.

And if you can't be arsed registering get them here for no work what-so-ever!

There's 3S and CFJ finals as well.

Hayao was the cosplay guy, right? Takes guts showing up in a major tourney like that, especially considering they release DVDs of the thing nationwide. :(

Team USA got properly raped by the Kuroda/Hayao team. Imagine having to go back home and tell everyone you got beaten by a guy in a skirt. :P

The guy can pull off 720s like it's nothing, though.

Incidentally, you *need* to check out the JPN torrent doing the rounds a couple of weeks ago featuring Pyrolee and Frankie3S up against the locals. Ridiculously cool matches.

Yes, poor old J.Wong and Mr Oritz, timing out Chunners was the iceing on the cake :(

Fear the Q!! :(

Aha, that was the torrent up from GVision yes? I could never get those torrents to work so i switched my bittorrent app to BitComet, which apperently lets you snaffle the asian torrents, so i've got them now ;)

They were rediculous. Frankie3s is rediculously solid. But that Chun Li vs Yun (Pyrolee) excellent, taking the full SA2 parry when cornered with a smidgen of life AND putting in the dying seconds of his Genei Jin. Cap. Doffed!!

I still want the rest of those Shirube 2 vids mind :P
