But what does Sony have that would be worth waiting for?

Remember the PS2 originally sold in Japan as cheap DVD player.

In all honesty i can't see Sony coming up with anything different From MS i.e. an (Entertainment hub) I doubt that they'll have exclusivity on GTA one of the PS2's most important selling points in the west especially, MGS4? To be honest the series is getting a little stale now.

Final Fantasy? If it has graphics like the cut scenes it'll pique my interest but Square Enix are slowly turning into the EA of the East in regards to RPGs,

I actually read that they wanted to release a new RPG every month?! Madness.

Basically i suspect the systems will be even in terms of power but what about the Cell i hear you cry.

Won’t it solve world hunger and bring an end to the evil that men do? And also cook my breakfast and give me a blowjob in the morning, while hovering my house and then drive the bus to take me to work? Because it’s like so awesome because Sony say so.

I’ve got Two words for you and they stick in my throat every time I have to say them: Emotion Engine. :D

Cheap Blu-Ray player?

MGS3 unstaled the series.

GTA will be Sony exclusive. Time exclusive at least. Gran Turismo attracts millions, as does Final Fantasy (sewn up Japan).

And expect it to certainly be a hub, a bit like the PSX I imagine to a certain extent. PSP connectivity as well.

GTA's fate is up in the air. But if it comes down to bidding for the exclusivity

if only a six month one, do you really see MS sitting by the sidelines while Sony take it from under their nose like they did to Sega.

Anyway were all assuming WAY too much, E3 will reveal all. (Hopefully)

Ugh. When will people realize that WE CAN WAIT.

I want the next-gen to truly be the next-gen.

Typical - you're just thinking about games :D

Sony will want to sell the hardware initially (perhaps with a very thin launch line up) and know that the killer software will follow down the line. The PS2 launch line up wasn't great but Gran Turismo, MGS2, FFX and GTA and Pro Evolution all kicked in down the line as massive software and system shifters.

Win 'em with the hype day one 1 and the real thing later.

It's not just down to who offers the most money though. Say MS offer twice as much as Sony, that won't mean anything if the PS3 userbase is ten times bigger than X360s.

Actually its Dragon Quest that really seys the Japenese alight - keep that series PS3 exclusive and Sony need do little else!

Ah, but a new generation means a new user base. So it's everyone back to square one. And this time Sony have a worthy adversary with the financial muscle to challenge them properly.

I'd say Microsoft will have a huge battle to beat the "upgrade" logic many gamers will have. By that I mean many people saw the PS2 as an upgrade to the original Playstation due to the backwards compability. It seemed like less of a risk and the public currently asume Playstation will always have the most games.

If the PS3 is backwards compatible then I wouldn't be suprised to see most of the general public hold on from that console. Microsoft can have all the financial power they want but they have a huge problem to overcome, which is the simple fact that most of the gaming public almost see the Playstation brand as the single platform.

To be honest I'm quite amazed at just how quiet it's all been on the Sony front. When Sega were trumpeting Dreamcast, Sony were teasing the world with details of PS2 to draw attention away. Microsoft has clearly whipped up consumer interest, and is - without question - spear heading the next generation charge, whilst all I've heard from Sony is that they're having trouble with the disc format.

Complacency in front of a rival such as Microsoft is suicide, and I'm at a loss to explain why Sony aren't doing all they can to muscle MS out of the spotlight. To be honest, I think they'll either stun us at E3, and pretty much own the show, or the PS3 is much further away than we think.

I think Sony would be pretty foolish to rush the PS3 out just because Microsoft have jumped the gun. They'd be better off waiting a year so the Xbox 360 really does look old-hat by comparison. Much as I loved my Dreamcast and all the great games I think it was possibly Sega's biggest ever mistake releasing it too early and Microsoft don't seem to have learnt anything from history.

The simple fact is early-adopters are the kind of people who buy all the consoles. So releasing early in an attempt to sew up the market only sells consoles to people who'd have bought them regardless, the mass market will wait until the PS3 is out before making their choice no matter how good the 360 is.

Still, I'll buy one and then mop up all the great games in the £4.99 clear out sale next Christmas when it dies on it's ass.

The difference is that between the dreamcast's launch(in its home market -Japan) and the ps2 launch(again in Japan) there was a 16 month gap while this is clearly not the case. The logical gap between the xbox360 and the ps3 will be 4-6 months when it comes to launching in their home markets(U.S for the xbox360 and Japan for the ps3).

I believe that the fact that the xbox360 is launching in the western markets FIRST while the ps3 will launch in Japan first gives the illusion that there's a huge gap between the 2 when it comes to launch windows while the reality is that the gap will be very small. If you want to throw the revolution into the arguement i would say that the launch window of the next gen consoles(from first to last) will be around 7-8 months(with xbox360 being first and revolution being the last to launch).

For comparison's sake(speculation):

Xbox360 launch-November 2005

Ps3 launch-March/April 2006

Revolution(according to nintendo)-July(=mid summer) 2006.

..and here's how it went last gen:

Dreamcast-November 1998

PS2-March 2000

GC-August 2001

Xbox-November 2001.

Gap between DC/ps2 launch:16 months

Gap between ps2/Xbox launch:20 months.

I hope that this will show the time differences between then and now.I guess people like to discuss based on their own reality where the gap between the xbox360 launch and ps3 launch is the same with the gap of dreamcast and ps2 launch...if so.....ignore the facts and carry on....
