Ps3 To Launch This Year (in Japan)

According to news sight jiji.com - Sony want to get their next generation Playstation to market this year in order to boost their fortunes in light of their recent sub-par performance.

This came in an hour or so ago, here in Japan. The Japanese just says this year (could be fiscal, though), the second part seemed to suggest a little urgency. Looks like Howard Stringer's started shaking things up a little already.

well we'll see at E3 if it's possible, depending on how much they show, and even then there's still TGS for them to show the whole thing...I'll wait and see myself, i didn't think Cell and all that stuff was ready yet? Doesn't sound likely to me, but we'll have a better idea after E3.

If so, that's Nintendo fucked for another gen, last to market again

If it is this year as in 2005, then they surely must be taking some shortcuts as this certainly wasn't planned to be this way.

I thought they had some problems with the disc type they are using aswell which would only cause further delays.

Also if this is true, is the PS3 even going to be much better (hardware wise) than the X360, I originally thought it would completely outclass it, but maybe not so anymore.

Whens E3 start?

Monday. I can't remember if their conference is at 11pm or 2.30am our time. If this is true they must have a lot to show. As far as Nintendo are concerned it would be very bad news - they'll really have to impress to keep people interested.

The thing is, we've been hearing many things - from who, though? For all anyone knows, it could be nearly ready to go and awaiting fine tuning after a response at E3. I only posted this as a topic because it comes from a general news site, and not an internet forum.

they have been on the market the longest however, so if anyones rushing its certainly MS and possibly Nintendo.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if they got this out (in limited numbers) in Japan for Christmas. They did the same thing with the PSP last year. Would kill MS dead here, as people would be more interested in waiting a bit for the harder to get (and therefore more desirable) piece of kit.

If this happens it'll be interesting to see how Nintendo's PR machine gets round this.

Originally Nintendo said that whatever happened, they would beat their competitors to market. Then, when it became obvious that Microsoft were going to launch first, they said that they would still launch before their competitors, as they saw Sony as their real competitor.

.::: There has been a clarification already. It is possible that the PS3 will be released this year, as Sony developed the tech for the PS3 together with the PSP.

So they can, wether they will remains to be seen.

For Microsoft's sake, I hope they'll wait.

The thing is, the newflash strip also mentions that this is being seen as an attempt to get profits on the move for the company -that's the part that struck me - like they want to get new product out the door. Fast. Bad or good, it implies sooner, rather than later.

If this is true, Nintendo are going to be a bit fucked.

I think that Microsoft has more to lose from an early PS3 release/unveiling. Like the Dreamcast in comparison to the PS2, the Xbox 360 will look like outdated tech, just a snack between PlayStations.*

If I owned a hat I'd eat it if this is true. I really don't see Sony or Nintendo having their systems out anywhere this year.

Although I seem to be in a very small minority of folk around these parts who think Microsoft are making a huge mistake by releasing their system far too early.

??? relevance? Did anyone think they were working in serial mode or something?

.::: I don't know what the relevance is, some guy at Sony said it like that. Giving me the impression that it's simply done and they're just waiting for the right time (or a deal for HD-DVD/Blu-Ray).

MS is dead here regardless, 360 is going to do nothing for their fortunes in Japan. The only thing this would do is reduce Nintendo's market* even further.

*Non portable that is.

I'm sure if the PS3 comes out at Christmas in Japan and say Spring in the US (and Europe?) they will launch it with the full system with nothing half cocked. Such timing will put a dampener on sales of the Xbox360 for sure - an awful lot of Xbox owners have only relatively recently bought that machine and won't necessarily drop everything to buy the latest version knowing a PS3 is around the corner.

Its not as if a Christmas launch will be that much earlier than originally planned is it? Xmas 2005 instead of Spring 2006? And everyone and their dog in Japan will want a PS3 won't they? This will more-or-less ensure its success world wide too. Imagine the headlines - "PS3 sells 15 million units at launch" ;)

As for the Revolution, all I can say is personally its the one next gen console that I am definitely getting whenever it comes out.
