There's a joke waiting to happen there but I'm not rising to the bait.

Seriously Mr Pickford, the fuss at the time was about teaching children about homosexuality not teachers being homosexual.

Yes. And it put gay teachers in a very vulnerable position because the legislation forbade promoting homosexuality as normal which would leave them open to all sorts of accusations. I'm not making this up.

I don't see how this can be bigger than Hot Coffee, or even as large as videogame violence. No politician is going to start arguing homosexuality is worse than heterosexuality, and no pressure group will say kissing is worse than sex or violence. Only the Daily Mail, Jack 'JT' Thompson and right wing christian groups would go with this story, and that wouldn't be big at all.

I'm with John on this one. The climate of Clause 28 wasn't a good one for gay teachers at all, and the Clause was deliberately vague with its focus on preventing "promotion" of homosexuality. But the message sent out was anything but vauge - homosexuality was officially abnormal. Hardly encouraging for of supportive of gay teachers, even if they weren't directly targeted.

You're not making it up but there was a lot of misunderstanding about Section 28. It was very vague, and there wasn't the case law to define it properly. Plus it was in the anti's interests to exaggerate about it. A bit of agitprop.

Gay teachers weren't in a vulnerable postition if they didn't talk to kids about their personal sexuality. Doing that would be pretty unprofessional, reagrdless of their orientation.

It was bad legislation, and did reflect some nasty attitudes, and it should have been repealed long before it was, but in many ways it was largely symbolic. And Brian Souter is a cock.

They didn't have to talk about their personal sexuality. They could accidentally mention *anything* about their personal life or attitudes and be liable for prosecution. Lots of teachers would mention their wives and children in passing or where they went on holiday etc. For a gay teacher to do this they could be accused of presenting a gay lifestyle as normal. Which they were. Which is it.

No they couldn't. The Act didn't allow for individuals to be prosected under Section 28, and only one case against a council was ever brought on it.

He's not making it up. The guy who taught our class for the final year of primary school was forced out of his job for being openly gay. Whilst there may have only been one 'prosecution' for homosexuality in schools, it would suprise me massively if this gentleman had left of his own free will rather than being bullied out.

I hadn't realised the legislation was in place as late as 2003 though!

Begrudging someone employment on the basis of whose arms they choose to seek solace in at the end of the day can't have ever seemed like a reasonable thing to do, can it?

Surely everbody's fine with gay teachers now though? And by everybody I mean people who will talk about the subject publicly.

I was told to do a lesson observation of a teacher in the school I work at the other day. He walked into the lesson in a Mary Carpenter T-Shirt with leather trousers and a mug that said 'Born Gay, Fabulous by choice' cocked his wrist and said "rrrrriiiiiiigggghhhht class". I laughed so much I nearly cried. He's apparently straightened up a bit in recent years.

Openly gay teachers get a lot of abuse from lads in the 14-16 age range. I honestly don't believe it is in their interests as professionals to be open about it.

Anyways, I came in here to say that my copy of Bully from HMV has arrived.

Yeah, you automatically get a snog from the chubster. Three of us were in the room at the time and we all went "ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww". :D

I've just put it on at work, with most of the guys standing around my PS2. Talk quickly went from the technical to the mocking. I found that I had to hit the girl afterwards then run away, in attempt to redeem my manhood.

Overheard some nice dialogue between pupils- one of them was saying "People say kids are influenced by video games... but I've not become a moustached plumber yet..."

Gameplay does remind me more of The Warriors than GTA, which is no bad thing. Just have to resist the temptation to keep setting off the fire alarm though... always wanted to do that in school, and it's seriously getting in the way of my progress through the game now.

I seem to keep failing at the 'Shop Class' minigame, it tells me to spin the left analogue stick in a clockwise direction but everytime I do that it just fails me, anyone having the same problem?

You need to keep on rotating it, not just one single rotation. I think that tripped me up the first time I did it. Think it sometimes penalises you if you're too slow to react as well.

Ahhh, that makes sense. Thanks.

The thing that kept failing me on that was that I would kinda push the stick out to the edge and then start twisting. It seemed to be picking it up as a move in the anti-clockwise direction when I was wanting to move clockwise.

I like that Jimmy goes in for the full-on snog with the fat chick but just a regular kiss with most of the other girls.

Having played it for a bit, I think it's safe to say this game is not going to bring about the end of civilization as we know it. It's all been a storm in a teacup as usual.

Are the graphics still looking alright?

I'm not overly impressed by the graphics so far. I think I've been spoilt by the 360.

I also can't seem to find an option to invert up/down which sucks. ;)
