Doctor Who

That was quite, quite atrocious.

And, it could have been really good, but we had BBC news, pop culture references (sugar cubes? Lol!) and a world encompassing threat solved with the sonic deus ex machscrewdriver.

Jesus wept, as the little interactions, and the villain could have been wonderful.

Spec on the next ep!

Oh so they've stressed the fact that the Angels knock people back in time? They forgot that important plot point last time they appeared....

Oh so they're in New York with Rory and Amy?

Wasn't someone else in New York about a few decades ago who Rory and Amy might choose to stay with if they ended up there?

I bet Amy and Rory end up back there raising River...

As other have said, it really was like ghost of RTD past had come to visit.

- Massive world altering event that will never be mentioned again

- Implications of said event ignored, never mind people miraculously coming back to life after being dead for 10 minutes), what about all the bus drivers, airplane pilots...etc who would have had a heart attack?

- BBC newsreaders out the wazoo

- Hey guys iPads! Twitter! Wii!

- We've got 5 minutes of episode time left and forgot to figure out a resolution. I know let's have the Doctor wave the Sonic Screwdriver at the problem and it will all go away

- Matt Smith even seemed to be channelling Tennant in spots

Chris Chibnall may very well be the showrunner when Moffat leaves, that's scarier than any Doctor Who monster

Yeah, I gave up on this after half an hour and watched 'Brick' (which was amazing). Had same 'Will Chibnall be showrunner' shivers but I don't think anyone's gonna be clamouring for him are they? Pop culture references are fine and it was pacy, but there was no threat or feeling of any of this actually mattering, despite the worldwide news reports.

Hence the RTD-ness I think. Huge epoch-changing events disconnected from emotion or drama. When's Cornell gonna come back?

Sorry if it sounds like weve all suddenly got a downer on Doctor Who,

but its true that we have gone from well told, very well acted * scary * stories like this:

To where we are now.

Doctor Who may as well be on childrens BBC at 4:30pm these days. It didnt do any harm for Sarah Jane Adventures.

Yes, Doctor Who is for youngsters really.. but the right balance of both kids and adults appeal has gone out of the window somewhat.

Its probably pressure from above in the top management to make it more stylish, less offensive and " modern " no doubt.

To me, theyve watered the whole thing down and focussed the entire show on The Doctor, Amelia and Rory.

Its like the monsters and side characters dont even get a look in(!)

doctor_who.jpg

Its just those three all the bleeping time , being wordy and just.. Looking.at.each.other.

quite frustrating really

Personally I liked it. Not tub thumpingly brilliant, nowhere near terrible and CERTAINLY nowhere near RTD bad level.

Smiths excellent. Amy and Rory are fab, as is Brian. The 'special new aspect' of Unit I either misse or wa RTD hyperbole that said.

Also I thought it had a really nice look. Far bette than the children's tv direction of first few series of the relaunch.

Do we still have to do episode spoilers? Just to be on the safe side.

I thought it was terrible throughout.

Smith looking pretty uncomfortable during certain sections (the whole heart attack sequence really did seem more written for Tennant's Doctor than the current one). The story had no drive with endless filler montages of cubes in daily life and then when the story did actually begin (when the cubes came to life) everything got resolved in the most asinine way possible. In the space of about ten minutes the villain is revealed, their plan divulged, a third of the human population killed, one of the Doctor's hearts started again and a magic wand fix of the problem and some shitty voice over wrapping it all up. I had problems with last seasons needlessly messy and relentlessly dark approach but I'd favour that over this utter dross every time.

Also what the hell was that power of three bollocks about? I mean, I get it but it made little sense in this story when Rory (and Amy to a lesser extent) did so little to the outcome of the story. If they have a claim to saving the world then so did Rory's Dad and whatsherface from UNIT. I guess power of five didn't have the same ring to it.

I think you lot forget that this is in fact aimed at 8 years old and is not the X files. <_<

You really think that?

Well you re probably right. Sadly.

The thing is see, Doctor Who's strength over the last 40 years or so has been its appeal to all ages.

For you to come out and say its for 8 year olds, highlights the new generation Doctor Who's failings!!!

One of the things I remember loving about Rose the episode is it was written for youngsters. That didn't make it stupid though and to me the distinction is very important. A whip smart show written for kids but clever enough to appeal to everyone is the very essence of Who. Reading that last couple of pages knowing how boring the show had been this past four years and seeing your reactions to this latest episode I can scarcely conceive how bad it must be.

Wow, it's even more of an RTD revival than I thought. Haven't heard that line for a while. We used to get it trotted out every week in defence of his latest episode.

Doctor Who is a family show, if it was a children's show it would be on CBBC and not at primetime on a Saturday night.
