Doctor Who

Hopefully they tone down the arrogance of the new girl (the problem with having a companion that is an equal to the Doctor is that they can turn into something as unlikeable as River Song) but I was impressed by her, both in appearance and performance. I can't say I was all that bothered by the episode as a whole though but I'm not sure if that is because I'm pretty bored of the Daleks since the show's return or if it was just a bit, well, dull.

That twist brought to mind the twist in a certain somewhat recent sci-fi film, though I can't even hint at which one without spoiling it.

Good episode, though I'm not much of a Dalek fan, and scenes with just one of them tend to feel more threatening than whole armies of them.

It was a bit annoying watching Rory try and understand the "eggs/ex" thing, but it worked well when it was called back at the end. Eggs, stir, 8 minutes... clever!

It wasnt set on Earth much, which was a start!

And next weeks is off-planet too.

It felt like a random episode of Doctor Who, which is also great stuff. I kept saying "please dont be a two parter"

and thankfully it wasnt!

Also, you know the phrase " Twos company.. threes a crowd " well yes, its time to ditch Rory and Amy eventually.

And the new girl from Emmerdale looks just the person to fill the part.

thats a test PASS from me tonight :)

Why does everyone in doctor who have to be a doctor level genius and able to hack into everything because hacking is trivial in space let's just hack into the mainframe like it's the late 90s or a shitty hacking minigame in HALO or something. I'm sure they do the whole disembodied voice directing people through a maze thing at least once a series, too. Deus ex doors opening in the nick of time left right and center. Stop it and think of something better.

At least the new girl has good ubbs and I guess it was pretty decent overall and I suppose the whole resetting job Moffat did might make things somewhat interesting down the line.

Anyone still finding the sound mix a little off? I found it a bit hard at times to make out some of the dialogue.

My parents used to have that issue until they turned off their TV's virtual surround sound setting. It's always sounded fine on my TV.

I thought that was rather good, and probably the third best opener after the last two. The twist was quite clever, as was the twist of Jenna turning up already! I can't wait to see how Moffat sorts that one out.

He did a great job with the Daleks too. The scenes with the dormant ones in the asylum were great, and now RTD's Oncoming Storm stuff has been wiped out. The Daleks are Daleks again. :)

My interest was piqued as soon as you-know-who appeared, because I had no idea that:

The character would be introduced in this ep. Really surprised me. And then, because I knew she was the New Companion, the ending twist also really surprised me! Can't wait to see how Moffat gets out of this one!

Moffat has a message about that, thanking the press and people from 4 screenings for not spoiling it.

Was the new (variation?) Doctor Who text revealed before? I hadn't seen it mentioned in here.

Moffat said recently that each episode will have a different variation on the opening titles. Though judging by that first one, the changes will be limited to the fonts and maybe some of the colours!

The thought had crossed my mind, with it being Dalek-y.

Given she made a big point at the end about remember, and Moffat likes to play with time travel and meeting in a different order I'm not sure we've seen the last of her.

It's a possibility. She doesn't know him at the start of the episode, but it's been established that the Daleks can remove certain memories. That said, I'm not sure it should be done so soon after it's been tried with River Song.

Steven Moffat is really pushing the second Doctor vibe, isn't he? We have a a new genius companion for our Patrick Troughton-esque Doctor. In fact, wouldn't be surprised if we find out her surname is Heriot at some stage. We just need a Scottish chap who enjoys the feel of a gentle breeze between his legs and the ensemble will be complete.

Weird that they said that the first thing that gets removed from the dalek's head is love and she can't remember the Doctor, innit? #romancesubplot

Well it got two thumbs up from our 8 year old who was almost unable to eat his dinner as he was so excited about the return of the doctor.

He got to wave his sonic screw driver at the Zombie darleks, hid behind a pillow as the mad darleks came for the doctor and cheered when they all escaped at the end.

What more does one require of an evening :)

Pretty sure she said her surname during the ep, I don't recall it but it wasn't Heriot.

Hang on a minute...

Is this going to be a 'same actress, different character', like they did with Martha Jones and her earlier Cyberman-fodder doppleganger, or this character is going to be the actual companion, most likely via some very convoluted explanation?

Anyway, didn't think much of the episode, I'm afraid. A few funny amusing, but I felt really bored about half-way through. :(

Fuck knows what's meant to be confusing about someone dying in a show based around time travel and that person re-appearing in a later episode (or many) set in a different time. It's no so much confusing as part and parcel of the very concept.
