Doctor Who

The Hartnell era continues with 'The Rescue', a two-parter about a crashed spaceship on an alien planet, but all is not as it seems! I rather enjoyed this one, I must say. Keeping it to two parts meant it was tight and to the point, didn't overreach itself or drag on, and had a good twist at the end. They also pick up a new sidekick, Vicki, who is cute.

Explain?

In the first episode all the characters are "borrowing" alien tech from Torchwood

Ratboy Owen was out on the town trying his luck with some very attractive, non-rat looking ladies. He gets shot down.

He then sprayed himself with some kind of alien drug/pheremone.

He then goes back to the same woman.

She immediately became very interested and wanted shag him senseless (I'm not even sure if they were going home or to the club toilets so desperate was she now for his man missle)

On the way to the shaggin her boyfriend comes over to stop her leaving with some man. Owen looks to get the crap beaten out of him, until he uses the spray again, and the man starts snogging him. And the couple then argue over who gets to shag ratboy first. Owen's happy with this as everyone in Torchwood is bisexual. It's one of the entry requirements to the job.

(The inference is that Owen does this regularly, although maybe not the BF bit)

So while he's basically date raped 2 people, this within the show is treated with the air of "all being a bit a silly fun" and a bit a laughy laddy jape. "Oh that Owen. Isn't he funny"

Eurgh :(

I don't remember that.

EDIT: Oh, Children of Earth, I thought you were still talking about the first series and were bigging up episodes like Cyberwoman and the one with cannibals in the Welsh Valleys.

Children of earth was funny, two and a half episodes leading up to Captain Jack's amazing plan - standing in front of the alien thing and asking it nicely to stop!

RTD "we need a civil servant. You know. A little but like Malcolm Tucker. Just humane, haunted. Troubled".

One week later: "oh sod it we'll just get Malcolm Tucker, I'm sure that the audience won't project the civil servant he's world famous for onto the civil servant who's nothing like that who in my brilliant script".

Next on the Classic Who marathon, 'The Romans'. This is four episodes set in ancient Rome, unsurprisingly. As per the norm, a light-hearted holiday turns into a fight for their lives, as Barbara and Ian get captured and made into slaves. By astonishing luck, the Doctor and new girl Vicki just happen to be heading to Rome (well, all roads lead there - it's the name of part 2) and both groups manage to get themselves out of trouble again without actually running into each other. Seriously, Barbara becomes a servant to the Caesar where the Doctor is pretending to be his new musician, Ian rescues her without the Doctor or Vicki seeing either of them, and they all escape separately! The Doctor even gets into some fisticuffs this time, although his half of the adventure is rather more light-hearted on the whole. I lost count of the number of times he laughed hysterically in this story. Every other line seemed filled with giggles.

Oh, then he gives Nero the idea to burn down Rome.

Overall, a weirdly mixed tone, more jovial than normal, but a fun romp.

The 'film posters' for the other episodes are out.

I quite like 2 and 4. 1 and 3 look a bit naff.

Like the idea that they're trying to make each story an "event" on its own though rather than a season long arc

This is a big test of Matt Smith for me, as I still havent warmed to his version of the Doctor.

He's not shit or anything like that. - To me, hes more middle of the road " oh that'll do " territory.

This series is where the guy should really have settled into the role. I will be expecting great things.

I suppose thats the strange thing about Doctor Who these days. Very marmite.
