Doctor Who

While I enjoyed every episode last season - it really did feel as though it was tying itself in knots to get itself out of problems of its own doing. I really couldn't care for River Song and didn't find her that interesting a character - which is probably the biggest problem. Matt Smith is still an utter joy as the doctor and if, as I hope, this season returns to more individual adventures and not having to bother with any of the nonsense that RTD came up with (given that most of that timeline seems to have been done away with completely) - we can have proper cybermen, proper daleks and proper Who again...

^ This.

My wish is still to see some really old-school Cybermen. The original Hartnell / Troughton versions were creepy as hell. The initial ridiculousness of their voices was quickly removed once you realised their intent and complete lack of compassion.

So far, then, we've had historical > alien > historical > alien > historial. I'm guessing the next one will be alien again?

Oh hell's yeah, proper scary alien looking through the window!

(The Sensorites, part 1 of 6)

Man, that scene would have scared me shitless as a kid. I mean, I vaguely recall being scared by Daleks, and they're just giant pepper pots!

The BBC have announced that a new trailer for Doctor Who Series 7 will air on BBC One at 8pm, Thursday August 2.

During the Olympics the BBC are parading their new season of drama each night with "specially-made feature length trailers" and Doctor Who will receive a 90 second trailer.

Seriously - it was that stupidly terrible. None of it made a bit of sense - which is generally the case with Who, but oh good lord, all logic was thrown out the window.

It's worse than anything RTD wrote.

Sorry meh but you really need to go and re-watch some of the later RTD trash again and then repost an apology.

It was a disappointing climax yes but gods its worlds away from some say Season 3 or 4 - you've been spoiled by two seasons of Smith as the Dr and Steven on writing duties

So, next on Classic Who, The Aztecs!

This was an enjoyable enough four-parter in which the characters all get to stretch their legs and have a bit of fun. Barbara becoming a goddess, Ian becoming a soldier, the Doctor getting engaged (lolwut?!). Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves and taking the whole situation rather lightly, but then of course people start getting sacrificed and it all gets a bit scary. And it is yet another "we can't get to the Tardis until we do x, y and z" story, which is predictable, but they wrap up quickly enough, so whatever.

As for the extra cast, the bad dudes were bad, good dudes were good, and they were all surprisingly watchable with a minimum of cringe. The action, as ever, was a bit laughable.

The sets were pretty good in this one. They had this massive landscape painting behind them which looked excellent, and all the costumes were ridiculously extravagant.

So far, then, we've had historical > alien > historical > alien > historial. I'm guessing the next one will be alien again?

I also watched The Aztecs for the first time not all that long ago, and I really, really enjoyed it.

So are you trying to watch all of Who from the beginning? All the episodes that exist anyway. :(

My problem with it, mainly, is that it was so utterly beyond believability, with people from all corners of history and future oddly co-existing as if it were perfectly normal. Not an iota of it made a lick of sense.

Maybe I'm remembering it incorrectly - but god it stunk.

I'm going to (try to) watch all of them, even the ones that don't exist! ;)

(As I understand it, there is at least an audio version with pictures for every single episode.)

I reckon this will probably take me about three years, unless I get bored and give up.

Aside from some vague memories of Who from the eighties, and the TV movie, I haven't seen any of these before.

So far, I wouldn't say they're great but they are perfectly watchable, and surprisingly well shot.

On the trailer...

Was that River Song in there? Oh FFS.

When he said 'Who do you think?' I thought he meant the ginger had killed them.

I am really tired of Rory and Amy - I thought they were leaving?

They are leaving part way through. River is supposed to be back for their last episode, possibly her last too.

David Tennant and Arthur Darvill are going to be at my workplace sometime over the next few months, along with Olivia Colman, Will Mellor and Vicky McClure from various Shane Meadows stuff. They're filming a new series for ITV, the production team have rented part of our factory to use as an office/film set (it used to be the 'skins' set). It's the same production company who made life on mars, spooks, outcasts (lol), hustle, the hour, brighton rock, eastern promises and some other stuff I haven't heard of. I've been down there a few times already for general IT related stuff, there's nothing to see yet unfortunately (lots of production staff with apple kit and men building sets at the moment). The show is meant to be inspired by 'the killing'. I doubt the talent will spend much time here, but maybe I'll get lucky and get to meet one or some of them. It's off-limits to people from my company, but me and my boss get permits to wander about as they lease their internet/phones off us. :)

Chris 'Cyberwoman' Chibnall is behind that show. If you happen to see him throw your shoe at his head on behalf of Rllmuk.

Classic Who:

Just watched the last part of The Sensorites. I quite enjoyed these as well; I prefer the sci-fi stories over the historical ones. Here, what started as monster type aliens, become humanised very quickly once they go down to their planet. Then there's a few episodes where the treacherous alien tries to gain control and kill the humans in various ways, then this final episode where it all wraps up in the last five minutes!

I really can't get my head around the pacing of these old serials. Is it because they didn't know from one episode to the next how many each story who need to have? Is that why you have episodes where nothing happens at all, and then episodes where the whole plot has to be crammed into the last five minutes? Like in this one, we discover the human survivors, what they were were doing, the Doctor stops their plot, and reveals the identity of the bad alien, and gets his Tardis key back, and then right at the end even gets into a ten-second argument with Ian where he promises to throw him of the ship-THEENDCUTTOCREDITS! Or were they all written this way far in advance?

This is also the first time that the Doctor and Susan have spoken about where they come from, another planet (as yet unnamed), and that part of the reason they're still travelling because they can't easily direct the Tardis back home.

The Sensorite costumes were terribly bland, but their face masks were effective, cleverly hiding the exposed jaws of the actors by having them covered by big bushy beards. I did find it ridiculous that any Sensorite could pass for a high ranking official just by stealing his sash! But that's the joys of sci-fi, looking at alien concepts and playing with them. This society has no notion of lying or deception, so it only took one bad egg to throw them into disarray. It could have been explored more, I felt. Again, very rushed ending.

Onto the French Revolution next, apparently...

Right, this was... okay. Meh.

The best part was the Doctor walking through the fields of France to some jolly music, then stopping to help some impoverished workers by pretending to find gold and whacking their slave-driving boss over the head, then walking off again. And then later dressing up as some high-ranking out-of-town official by visiting a fancy dress shop. :D

I also love how all French people are really posh British people. Correction: I love how all people are really posh British people. Second correction: I love how EVERYTHING IN THE UNIVERSE is really posh British people. :)

So, next is Planet of the Giants, and oh my lol they've been shrunkeneded! Bravo.

I've got an amazing DW monster.

The epi. would be called "The followers" and its about these aliens who are usually invisible but using time, when someone does something, they can follow "in that persons footsteps" afterwards.

So if i went upstairs and told off my children for being naughty, when i'd come back down again, they'd could retrace my foot movements but whilst they could't deviate from the path, they'd evolved to could do anything in between (including turning around using the same path back to where they came from).

They could join or leave this "energy time" trail at any point.

They'd be some background thing whereby when a person moves the leave a time "footprint" or "transport" which the aliens could use. Much like a ghost in a racing game.

I didn't get the idea from that though. I just wanted to smack the kids but didn't.

Then wondered how amazing the story would be if someone followed me after i'd sat back down.
