Doctor Who

The Rhino was a exemplary prosthetic. Really well done I thought.

It was executed well, but as an idea didn't show much imagination. They were supposed to 'alien' after all, but were essentially bipedal animals.

To be fair, the space cats/pig slaves/space rhinos are all a bit lazy too.

You mean because they're just animals melded with humans? Fair enough, but I still find them more convincing, mainly because they're actually there. I still haven't seen a CGI creature that hasn't screamed "THAT'S NOT REAL!" at me.

The Satan Pit bloody well was. Best thing in this revival of Who in my opinion.

It was still obviously a computer generated, "fake" image though. Maybe us gamers are more finely attuned to this sort of thing, but CGI never convinces me as much as a model or prosthetic. For one thing CGI is almost too slick (like when they put loads of cute mannerisms in CGI dinosaurs), but the biggest problem is the lighting. It doesn't look like part of the same scene.

I've got mixed feelings about Who now, after mostly loving S1. I don't think it's aimed at me: it's a kids show (sorry, a "family show"), so I guess its unfair to judge it as anything else. S3 hasn't had any rubbish episodes to compare with the worst of S2 yet (althought the first Daleks in Noo Yoik episode was fairly boring), but I don't think there has been anything that has hit the heights of the best episodes either.

I enjoy it in flashes: there are good bits that perfectly capture what I want from Who (a bit like Ecclestone's speech about the world spinning in the first episode), when the Doctor is just the sort of hero I want kids to have. Sometimes there are nice ideas that would have captured my imagination as a child. But for the most part I'm not engrossed in the actual storytelling or excited by the drama, so I'm just watching it for the window dressing. As long as I get 5-10 minutes of good stuff and the rest remains passable then I'm going to keep watching.

I find this surprising to be honest. In places S1 was brilliant but was just as much a kids/family show then as it is now, if not more so. S3 has so far been thankfully free of 1) farting aliens, 2) Rose's *&^king Mum, and 3) Rose's *&^ing why-won't-he-just-die boyfriend. The programme is much more professionally made now as well, which means that pretty much everything that disappointed me about S1 has been fixed.

David Tennant may not have quite the screen presence and gravitas that Ecclestone had, but for me he seems to be more comfortable with (and consistent in) the role. There's still a tendency for episodes to pull plot resolutions out of nowhere, but so far all of the episodes in S3 have been such entertaining rollercoaster rides that I really don't care. It's perfect Saturday early-evening telly.

I'm also in the great-episode-crap-monster camp. The story and some of the dialogue were brilliant - I loved the Doctor and Lazarus discussing the pros and cons of longevity in the cathedral, for example. But the monster was rubbish, the human face seemed to be gurning from the far side of Uncanny Valley, and it looked nothing like Mark Gatiss anyway. They would have been better off just using his eyes and foregoing the human face altogether.

But it wasn't enough to ruin what was overall an excellent episode IMHO. And again, like everyone else, I thought the trailer hit all the right buttons.

Oh, good thinking. I was wondering what a complete stranger could have said to make her so instantly frightened and angry.

My initial thoughts when slick haired stranger spoke to Martha's mum, and for no reason other than I want it to happen, were "hmmm, in league with The Master?".

I don't read around the series, scripts, interviews, watch confidential etc. so may be way of the mark, but we've seen the return of the Daleks, the return of the Cybermen, it only really leaves The Master as a big bad.

Please don't use Buffy terminology with regards to Who....

And there are plenty of others....Ice warriors, Zygons, Sontarans....

Hopefully they will put the Master to good use unlike the 8th Doctor movie.

Boy... do I feel dumb...?

Sorry, I genuinely thought you were just taking the piss, after all the posts following the episode and stuff. I thought the trailer was just for the next episode too at first, before I checked the forum and realised my ridiculous mistake.

As for you linkster, don't be silly.

I'm sure this has been asked / discussed before, but it's worth another bash; do you think we'll ever see another story in which the current Doctor encounters one or more of his past incarnations? I mean, just how great would a couple of DT+CT+Paul McGann episodes be?

Nah, they're saving that for the movie

Davies said no. But he has also said he wants to move on soon now Who is back on its feet so whoever takes over might be open to it and McGann definately would be...

Eccleston maybe not so much though.
