Doctor Who

It's hard to pull direct comparisons because Dr Who does a pretty unique audience. But in general quality terms, I just don't feel I've ever been totally blown away by New Who like I have by say, the best BSG, West Wing or Sopranos etc. If I was being harsh, I'd suggest the penchant for Deus Ex Machina and teasing the audience with relationships that can't happen would bring Smallville to mind :P. It's good. I just feel it's been so rarely great.

With one exception: The Girl In The Fireplace was perhaps a perfect example of the form.

TGITF was just the closest S2 got to replicating what S1 did practically every week - Unquiet Dead, the Blitz one, Father's Day, Dalek, Rose, Bad Wolf. all fantastic TV. Comparing it to US shows misses the point as they are largely shoe gazing, gormless teen aimed shitefests.

What's almost worse is people who seemingly cannot cope with the fact that now it's back it shot it's load fairly quickly and is now a horrible cheap parody of those self same US shows that get so much unnecessary praise. *

* Deadwood being the sole exception these past years.

Yeah, because the shows I mentioned are "shoe gazing, gormless teen aimed shitefests.".

I would rate TGITF better than anything in Season 1 because either 1. It was a better story 2. It had to build everything from scratch in 45 minutes whereas some of those you mention had the advantage of some form of continuity. Some overrated ones there too!

This Season and most of last have by no means been bad, just there are consistent problems.

They have been largely bad, that's the problem.

Besides, what the hell are you talking about 'overrated'? You're one person, as am I. One opinion each. Overrated is a lazy stupid criticism.

Eccleston brought the hollywoooood quality to Dr Who.

theres the difference.

I actually believed he was Doctor Who after two episodes.

I do appreciate him more and more with every additional episode, that's a fact.

When it turned into a motion detector today everyone in the room groaned, even the kids thought it was stupid.

It wasn't a motion detector - it was quite obviously a DNA tracking device. :P

As soon as that happened I immediately thought that would be the response on this thread. Personally I don't think it's overused, just a handy problem-solving gadget. I now see it as much as part of Doctor Who as the Tardis.

What was it about that finger-tapping. It was... just... nothing, but somehow incredibly creepy.

OH MY GOD WHAT WILL HAPPEN I CAN'T WAIT.

I echo these sentiments. That bit was just...spooky.

In other news, I enjoyed tonight's episode. And I liked the line, "Reversing the polarity shouldn't take that long...I must be losing my touch". Nice.

That was inspired that bit. Had a room full of Who fans loling loud.

Really enjoyed last nights episode. Thought everything about it was just excellent. I thought the sonic use in this also fitted into rather nicely, I mean it is sonic and it went into a musical instrument. Made sense to me anyway.

Now then the Mr Saxon broadcast obviously didnt happen it was just supposition on what the treat was going to be. Saying that, I thought the trailer for the rest of the season looked amazing. John Simm just plain oozed malevolence. The scarecrow's looked really spooky too. And Jacks back

I didn't get around to posting yesterday, but I loved that episode too. I was worried last week when it looked like a generic Doctor vs. big monster story, but I was glad to be proved wrong. Some of the dialogue was incredible, as was Gatiss' performance, and Martha's family manage to endear themselves far more than they managed in the first episode.

As for that trailer, well, :( B) :(:(:D

The rest of the series looks like it has the potential to blow even the first season out of the water. My God I love this show!

to me, it looked as though he was sitting there impatiently waiting for the people in the room around him to die...

and did you all spot the design on the ring? Kind of gives the game away to the identity of Mr Saxon if you don't already know...

The reason the sonic screwdriver is used so much is simple.

Kids love it. Kids like to play at being the Doctor. The Sonic is something they can hold an use in their games.

This increases merchandising revenue.

Star wars has lightsabers, Doctor Who has a sonic screwdriver. Hence why it is used so much.

Absolutely loved last nights episode, blinding stuff.

Oh and Mr Saxon is obviously (probably)

The Master

. I've also heard that, and this is a major spoiler so don't reveal if you want to be kept in the dark, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

The Doctor becomes fully Human later on this season

yeap

it was initially reported when John Simm got the job that he was taking on the role of the Master. The design is the seal of the timelords.. and Mister Saxon is an anagram of 'Master No Six' (he's the 6th Master)

he was released from the tardis when Rose unleashed the power of the tardis to defeat the Daleks at the end of serie 1

Why is it obvious\probable? Have there been any indicators?

It's obvious/probable to me, might just be me mind. Colour me surprised if it is, and colour me wrong if it isn't, but Mr Saxon is going to position himself as some sort of uber enemy, who'll eventually reveal himself as the Doctor's

arch nemesis

Oh and what Scottr said

I'm not disagreeing I'm asking why you think it's obvious\probable. I've heard loads of rumours and supposed leaks but I'm not sure anything in the show is indicating this. Not that I've seen.

I don't think the show itself has given it away - it's not obvious if you're not an obssessive Whovian. The Ring of Rassilon, or at least the ring with the Seal of Rassilon on it, was shown for a couple of seconds. I do think that was deliberate though - it was a scene specifically with John Simm tapping his ring. I think that was put there for folks like us.

The Mister Saxon

anagram

is a bit obscure again...

I think John Simm will be excellent. Really looking forward to it.

The Ring of Rassilon, or at least the ring with the Seal of Rassilon on it,

It isn't the Seal of Rassilon.

54.jpg

It's that LazLabs symbol.

Which does look a bit Gallifreyan, though. Looks a bit Seal of Rassilony too. But isn't actually.

Just look at that pic, though. Amazing.
