Doctor Who

I haven't seen Spider-Man 3 yet, but at the climax of this episode I couldn't help thinking of the

church bell/symbiote costume

moment from the Spidey comics and cartoons. Coincidence this being shown around the film's release date, eh? :P

The ambitious effects on the monster were very good (the face was the only bit that didn't quite match)... but the old-age prosthetics were flawless!

Presumably the extra-long teaser at the end was to make up for us having to wait two weeks. :P

That was a corking episode. Brilliant.

Something about it reminded me of old-skool Phillip Hinchcliffe / Bob Holmes era Who - probably the out-and-out horror of the piece (especially the Doctor being stalked by Lazarus through the ducts and labs, and the dessicated "Life Force" corpses), but also something in Tennants portrayal really stood out tonight. There was a more serious edge to him I felt.

Rest of the series is looking fantastic.

Oh, and where was that PPB that was expected!?!

Why not just have the doctor lure him up into the bell tower and drop the bell onto the things head.

Two reasons. The previous time he was 'killed' Lazarous came back to life. And the DNA altering process was done with ultra sonics so he used the organ and the bell to create the right sonic waves to reverse\mess up the Lazarus's DNA.

Having seen the film yesterday, that's exactly what I thought.

I half expected him to kill the creature by ringing a big bell.

A surprisingly enjoyable episode there, I didn't think I was in for much, but the dialogue between Lazarus and the Doctor on age and all that was rather good [/extremely condensed review].

The trailer was awesome though, it makes me feel that every episode up until now (and possibly including the next one) is just building up to the last 6. Jack's back! Scarecrows! Derek Jacobi! Mr. Saxon! This could be very, very good (please don't balls it up, Who team!).

Anyone got a video and know morse code? I'm guessing Saxon was signeling something...

Based on the beeps which were going over the top of it, O-O-O-O-O-O-O.

Maybe he was getting a blowjob under the table.

episode was great tonight - loved the scene with Lazarus and The Dr in the church talking about immortality. Explains the Dr's recent death wish as well...

Martha was more interesting this week - bringing in her family and building her character a bit made a huge difference. She was really only an ornament in the last few episodes, but that was obviously the point.

Sad 'classic' Dr Who observation...

Did anyone notice the design on the ring Mr Saxon was wearing??? :P

(looks as though he was sitting somewhere in the houses of Parliament as well - perhaps we'll see Harriet Jones back as well - being influenced by Mr Saxon!). OMG!

or stop posting in here whining about it...

In fairness, the show is horribly overrated here. The series so far has been alright, without ever really hitting the heights of even the best Who, nevermind some of the best US series. The show frustrates me slightly because it has some excellent moments, but is pulled down by others. For example, the scene in the Cathedral with the Doctor discussing immortality was a really great piece of writing, really well done but then it was followed by another sonic screw driver escape. And there is still far too much psuedoscience mumbo jumbo that they should avoid as much as possible. I liked tonight's though, and the trailer looks excellent, but I can't help worry they won't quite live up to it.

WHAT US SERIES?

Name one that's better than Doctor Who.

I thought they looked gash. It didn't look anything like a man, just a rubber suit.

The episode was a return to form. Which isn't really that good a thing, it just means it's an inoffensive way to spend an evening. Overall it's been far more enjoyable than the last season though, I just wish the Doctor would lose the fucking screwdriver for good. It encourages lazy writing and is a get out clause for anything. When it turned into a motion detector today everyone in the room groaned, even the kids thought it was stupid.

It's hard to pull direct comparisons because Dr Who does a pretty unique audience. But in general quality terms, I just don't feel I've ever been totally blown away by New Who like I have by say, the best BSG, West Wing or Sopranos etc. If I was being harsh, I'd suggest the penchant for Deus Ex Machina and teasing the audience with relationships that can't happen would bring Smallville to mind :P. It's good. I just feel it's been so rarely great.

With one exception: The Girl In The Fireplace was perhaps a perfect example of the form.

It looked like the secure room from "Aliens of London".

Well I thought I'd come in here and mention the fantastic Mark Gatiss/old man prosthetics/performance and the John Simms finger drumming from the trailer but it seems that such assumedly perfunctory details were embraced by many others as enthusiastically as I embraced them myself.

This is the best series of Doctor Who I've ever seen, and I've shat on the last two series several times in this thread. Every episode in this series has been at least good entertainment. I just hope they don't pull another Love and Monsters out of the sack.

PS In the trailer. Is that a white TARDIS/TARDIS doors???
