Doctor Who

Unofficial overnight figures show that Evolution of the Daleks was watched by 6.5 million viewers. Was also the second most watched programme of the day (behind casualty).

Heh, I was just about to post that.

Should rise to around 7 million when the official figures come out, which means there's a chance it will nick that top spot. It easily beat out the competition on ITV - Vernon Kaye's Gameshow Marathon on 3.4 million. Aside from Doctor Who, what's really interesting is that while Any Dream Will Do, crap at it is, is hovering around the 5 million mark, Grease is the Word's first live show actually lost around a million viewers compared to previous weeks, only snatching 3.6 million for the main show and 2.6 million for the results.

Maybe this will finally be the kick in the teeth ITV needs: stop making shitty talent shows. We're bored to death of them.

As for Doctor Who, it was nice to see a rise of 0.2 million from Daleks in Manhatten to Evolution of the Daleks - doesn't often happen with two parters. It does add strength to the argument that Who would be better suited in the autumn/winter, howver. You could have added a good 2-3 million to that figure had it been cold and dark outside.

Rumours abound of a Dalek episode of Torchwood next season too...

Arf, how would that work?

This week in the sexy adventures of Torchwood, Captain Jack and the gang run into the last survivor of a race of deadly cyborgs from the future that only has one thing on its mind...

"PRO-CRE-ATE!"

Hopefully it will work in all the ways the cyberwoman show didn't.

The Daleks have appeared in other Big Finish spin offs so Torchwood seems like a decent fit.

I've just remembered another little thing I really liked about last night's episode, which was the guns the Daleks gave the human hybrid soldiers - basically tommy guns with Dalek laser barrels. A perfect little detail.

I think they shouldn't rely on Daleks so much but then I haven't really got into this series of Who like I did the other two. A lot of the episodes so far have appeared from trailers/aesthetically to be more kids TV than the family drama they seem to have gone for in the past, but I hold my hand up and say that having not actually watched very much of it this time round I could be wrong... The impression I get is that this is weaker than previous series.

It's been the most consistently great series of the lot so far, in my eyes at least. Gridlock especially was amazing.

Fuck's sake, Stu. As if people don't find your critical faculties bad enough, you openly admit to judging a show by its adverts.

One thing, whatever happened to UNIT? I didn't really get into this until the second new series, missed out on lots of the first. Was it ever mentioned? That would answer Piros request, loved the soldiers faces as they shot at Autons

Yeah. They were actually in a couple of season one episodes, albeit as a fairly generic set of special forces types, and they've had a mention in Torchwood. No Lethbridge-Stewart though, unfortunately.

Probably get some UNIT (and maybe Romana) next series, I'd imagine...

Seeds of Time was written by some bloke who used to write The Avengers, I seem to remember (I get all of my facts from The Discontinuity Guide, by the way, which is the only non-fiction Doctor Who book I've got), which explains the rough and tumble. Wasn't really a fan, myself. Monster looked fucking cool when I saw it in Doctor Who weekly but disappointing when I finally saw it via UK Nova a few months back. It does have the line 'You know Doctor, I could play all day in my green cathedral...' in it though, which is possibly the strangest thing ever heard.

You imagine wrong sadly.

UNIT will not be mentioned past the word UNIT anymore as the United Nations asked them not to say the words United Nations Intelligence Taskforce again as they thought it took away from the gravitas of the organisation.

As for Romana, almost certainly killed when Gallifrey went boom boom being as she was President and all....

Seeds of what now?

Seeds of Doom is an all-time classic, I won't hear a word against it.

Where did I get 'Seeds of Time' from?

Anyway, it's got some iconic imagery alright, but the first couple of eps are basically poor man's quatermass, and after that there's way too much padding out with hiding behind fences from rubbish 'guards' who can't even get it together to beat up Tom Baker. Don't think I even made it to the end of ep 4.

City of Death whups it.

I wasn't that impressed. There were some good bits, but parts were very, very clumsy indeed. Ric from Holby City's speech was SHIT, I'm not surprised the Daleks nobbled him.

Dalek Sec's tentacles moved terribly. Didn't even looked mildly realistic, unfortunately. Really "pulled me out" of every scene he was in.

And the amount of times the Daleks should have killed the Doctor (with him actually asking them to, which was really silly tbh) brought to mind the scene between Dr Evil and his son in Austin Powers where Scott Evil advises his father not to piss about and just kill Austin already.

When I've got production issues and writing issues about an ep, it's not great. It was enjoyable of course, but it's New Who. It's never going to be boring.

FFWD to the good bits:

1) End of episode 1 - Cybermen reveal

2) End of episode 4 - Adric dies

Skip the rest.

"Excellent!"

There's so much wrong with Earthshock it's funny. "Emotionless" Cybermen acting all sumg, a ridiculous piece of casting for the ship's Captain, and some of the worst "acting" Adric ever did. There's a hillarious bit just before he gets killed, where a keyboard sparks out. He was so scared of the charges he just types the air above it!

And the amount of times the Daleks should have killed the Doctor (with him actually asking them to, which was really silly tbh)...

That's not the first time this Doctor's tried to get himself killed. :P
