Doctor Who

I like it when Who doesn't pull its punches. People should die in it, especially if they're called Adric.

Seen the "episode 5 bit" on the Earthshock dvd extras? Classic. Anyway really enjoyed this weeks episode, mainly for all the reasons mentioned already. Don't forget though next week it's back at 7pm!

I still think the 45 minute episodes are restrictive to the overall story. They try to cram too much in and some parts feel a touch rushed, like they maybe wouldnt be in 25 minute eps.

For instance that whole "emergency temporal shift" thing just felt popped in there as a mcguffin (as Cartmel loved to call them) perhaps if there had been more time given to that part of the scene it would have felt less like a cheap get out of jail free card and more of a backup plan...

I loved it again. Solomon's speach has to be one of the greatest moments of the show so far, summing up everything that makes the Daleks great in one scene. Solomon makes a big idealistic speech that could have united a nation, to which the Daleks nonchalantly cry "EXTERMINATE" and gun him down. Ace.

It would have been better if his speech wasn't so filled with cliches like 'build a better tomorrow' that by the end I was hoping they'd kill him.

Shall I ramble on about this unimpressively for a bit? Okay...

Was enjoying this til friend and his missus came round. And their dog. I think the show just about got away with the 'dalek looking round' bit. I liked the bit later one when Sek was doing his 'why can't we all get along?' speech and two daleks exchanged a look, too. Managed to make it feel like they were rolling their eyes which is quite an achievement given all they had to express themselves with was a sink plunger... I guess you work with what you got.

I can see the manic depressive thing - thinking about it I guess the veering between up and down (appalling simplification of a complicated medical condition GET!) is something that's been a part of quite a few of the doctors along the way. Don't really see it too much for Peter Davison and Patrick Troughton's doctors though, and while I like the character to seem 'alien' I do find it a bit off-putting when Tom Baker suddenly flies off the handle at Sarah Jane for trying to help some rag-clad sub-humanoid out a quary or something, or when he's suddenly so dismissive of his companions for instance. He's different, there's no doubt about that, but I think he's most interesting as a character when this isn't shown with swivel-eyed ranting. There's a line (which I've just looked up cos I'm sad) from Pyramids of Mars which nails it - 'I'm a time lord... You don't understand the implications. I'm not a human being. I walk in eternity...' That's the kind of stuff that makes your Rose's and Martha's go weak at the knees.

Actually, that's a bit wank. 'You can't rule the world in hiding. You've got to come out onto the balcony sometimes and wave a tentacle...' That's better.

Oh, and I loved the 'you're the last of your species, I'm the first of mine' line - really nicely set out the two character's stalls...

Anyway, I'm just rambling now.

After not being that impressed with the first episode, mainly because the cliffhanger was spoiled by Radio Times, I thought that was excellent. So many great scenes... a real talkie, almost old style, episode.

Loved the shots of the Daleks flying around Hooverville kickin' ass and takin' names. Loved the shot of the pigmen in the lift - obviously bored. Loved Dalek Sec. Loved how, at the end, the Doctor would still offer to help the single remaining Dalek - which would mean taking him in his Tardis. I would've loved to have seen that.... temporal shift was a bit dissappointing, but, the Dalek has no idea when he's going to end up. I'm *assuming* that it'll be earth, but at a completely unknown time.

Interesting now there's only dalek and one time lord... (or is there :D)

oh - Martha was still a bit rubbish though... and she did that awful head wobbly thing when she was a bit annoyed at the Doctor in the theatre. I was expecting her to put up her hand to his face and say "talk to the hand", followed by a wobbly headed "whateva!".

Don't the cult of Skaro Daleks have those funny little insignias on them? Can anyone check?

It sticks out like a sore thumb. They don't really linger on close-up shots with the other Daleks though.

I've got nothing to check it on, only relying on my famously amazing memory.

I did mean check if the insignia is on the Dalek in the episode called Dalek. I doubt that though. I Kahn't even remember if the 2 Daleks are the same colour.

Was it me, or was that just comedy.

Old finger face on his hands and knees as the Daleks APPEAR FROM NO WHERE.

"I AM READY FOR WAR"

Why don't they just shoot the doctor when they have the chance. Bunch o retards.

Not the best TV ever to grace our screens is it...come on! :D

That's just something that you have to ignore. I know some people might attribute it to fear or respect, but it can't really be explained away. If the writing took care of it properly, the Doctor would never be in the firing line of a Dalek. Because if he was, he'd be toast.

They are, and it's something that crossed my mind too. It's definitely not the same Dalek though, as the one in series one had apparently just escaped from the Time War before being captured, and never mentioned anything about New York or whatever. I don't think RTD and co/ are quite that forward thinking. :D

Although it's easy to explain away by saying the Dalek was lying about just escaping the Time War. I doubt it is the same Dalek anyway.

It also didn't realise it was the last of its race, as far as The Doctor knew at the time, as its reaction seemed pretty genuine.

I think the best thing about Evolution was how you could see the writer had done her research. I remember reading that she went back and watched 1980s Dalek adventures before writing the script, and you could see that throughout. The countdown was a big nod to Dalek adventures of old, as was the Doctor informing Dalek Kahn that he was the only one left - very, very similar to McCoy's speech to the Supreme Dalek at the end of Remembrance of the Daleks.

Indeed, the way the Daleks spoke throughout was spot on. Not a duff line.

Just a fantastic piece of writing, all in all. And the direction was superb.

Plus it self destructed and all the other daleks are in atoms - the only others left are were destroyed in Doomsday...

And the Doctor states he'll probably see him again so...no...

I think Kahn has escaped into another part of time past thats not served by the great time tube to Cardiff.

My bet (well i hope) - Kahn becomes the new Emporer Dalek and creates a newer Dalek army.
