Doctor Who

Was a bit disappointed with that at first, mainly because Dalek Sec was a bit of a pansy, but it went all good again when the Daleks took control.

A real retro feel to it this week as well ("Rels", plus the Dalek lab hum, "Robomen" etc), where last week's was quite Tom Baker era, this felt more like a Troughton or Hartnell episode somehow.

Good fun then, but I'd be surprised if everyone liked it, because it was very silly. And Tennant needs to stop acting through gritted teeth. I find his constant angry state a bit unconvincing.

He was never going to be accepted by the real Daleks though. He was an aberration, and his chained appearance at the end really rubber stamped the Daleks' sheer badness once again. Far more valuable than having a new Davros figure in the series, IMO.

Talking of whom, it was nice to hear him referenced again. I was all worried they would write him out of Dalek history.

Oh, but what about the Dalek "chat" in the corridor! I cracked up when the one on the right looked furtively about before replying.

Yeah, that was pretty funny. Also: The pigs in the lift, standing around looking bored as they went up.

Also very funny. They were all "come on, come on, hurry up...".

Oh, and I think they're handling the Rose/Martha transition quite well now, basically by having the characters voicing the same concerns that the viewer has.

I keep wondering when we're going to see a second companion join The Doctor. There have been a couple of possibile candidates already - both Captain Jack and the guy from Love and Monsters would have been great - it would just break things up a bit, and provide a bit of relief from the Doctor / Martha relationship week in, week out. After all, they're not supposed to be a double act, it's meant to be The Doctor with his plot-facilitating assistant following him around and knowing when to be quiet.

EDIT: I do appreciate that the two examples of potential assistants wouldn't really have worked - especially Captain Jack who's far too big a character (although not quite big enough to hold Torchwood together all by himself, it seems).

I dunno man, you don't want to end up with this:

Of course the series has managed to have multiple companions right from the off, but I would imagine from a writer's perspective it makes it a bit tricky finding things for them all to do. Personally I like the Doctor + 1 setup.

This Doctor has a death wish, by the way. Have you noticed?

Yeah, noticed that alright.

I was wondering if they were going to kill Solomon when they did. I knew they should. I hoped they would and wouldn't cop out with Sec sparing him. It just felt right that, after his big speech, they just shoot him.

Thought that was excellent. Could have been a series closer, really.

Brilliant script by Helen, and James Strong surely has to be one of the best directors of Who since it came back - some of those shots of the Daleks were brilliant. They nailed it. Highlight for me was Soloman's speech - you knew exactly what the response from the Dalek was going to be, but the way it was handled was brutal as fuck. The screams of the crowd as he killed him just made the Daleks exactly what they should be - scary as hell.

It's going to take some episode to top that story this season. Excellent, excellent TV.

AS I expected PArt 2 impressed me more than one. Thats my only beef with the 2 parters you get all the exposition in P1, then action in Part 2.

Saying that though, the Solomon speech was a highlight for obvious reasons. The furtive Dalek was a touch of genius too. Did feel a small bit of hope for the Doctor as well when the Timelord/dalek/humans saved him, but new they wouldnt been around for long. Surely though if they had Timelord DNA spliced in they would have regenerated :D :D

Next weeks looks pretty good as well. I was expecting more cries of OH NOES CARDIFF AGAIN in the thread.

The low-angle shots of the Daleks rushing through the sewers were particularly sweet.

Yes! Thought they looked great in last week's trailer, and they lived up to it.

Some of the sweeping camera shots of Dalek Kahn strapped up to the computer were brilliant as well.

"Surely though if they had Timelord DNA spliced in they would have regenerated " not necessarily, its been hinted before that the timelords might be only one part of gallifreyan species....and that regeneration can be given and taken away... so perhaps the timelords regenerative abilities are not available to all gallifreyans....

or maybe this is how the that guy who might be back managed to get back....maybe one escaped....

Yeah I thought that was miles better than last weeks too. Last week was all set-up and this was the pay-off.

The only bad point in the whole thing was the flipping emergency temporal shift *again*, which is such a transparently obvious get-out-of-jail-free card. It's the Daleks' sonic screwdriver!

I like the fact we're now down to one Time Lord and one Dalek left in the universe. Feels epic.

Someone on this thread - might have been you actually - posted last week sometime that Tennant's playing this Doctor as a complete manic depressive.

After tonight's episode I'm convinced that's spot on. The scene in the end in the lab where the Doctor was saving Lazlow made him look mentally ill.

I don't have a problem with the shift. It was made quite clear in the episode how much of a drain it was for the cult, and as such it really is their last resort. Even with so little chance of survival on its own, Kahn would rather use it than let the Doctor help.

I loved it again. Solomon's speach has to be one of the greatest moments of the show so far, summing up everything that makes the Daleks great in one scene. Solomon makes a big idealistic speech that could have united a nation, to which the Daleks nonchalantly cry "EXTERMINATE" and gun him down. Ace.
