lol....

probably about 20 million people watched the chelsea vs liverpool game last nite, didn't stop it from being a boring game tho did it.

I think you over-estimate the number of people who have Sky.

Most footy matches on Sky usually only get between 1-2 million, on a very good day.

Nothing, but nothing, gets 20 million viewers in the UK anymore.

Is it my dodgy memory, or has no other doctor ever used the sonic screwdriver as much as this one?

pertwee used it like it was his dick

baker only used it if it helped the plot along

after that it became a bit less used...

yep tennant and ecclestone used it loads.

It's pretty excessive isn't it. Not only is it used too much, it now seems to do almost anything.

Exactly - Tom Baker & Peter Davidson are my most remembered Doctors and the sonic screwdriver only made the occasional appearance, mostly to repair K9, yet this one is a QVC wonder gadget that does everything.

It doesnt bother me that much to be honest, I mean having a sonic screwdriver with a wide variety of uses isnt that much of a step for an alien from a race that has mastered Time Travel and dimensional engineering.

A quick search throws up the following uses of the Sonic Screwdriver just in series one and early series two episodes:

The new sonic screwdriver also exhibits more functions than previous versions; aside from opening locks and repairing objects, new uses include: to detect and stop thought signals projected by the Nestene Consciousness (Rose); as a computer interface tool (The End of the World, The Christmas Invasion, New Earth); to intercept teleportation signals (The End of the World, Boom Town); to extract credit from a cash machine (The Long Game); to charge up a battery (Father's Day); as a medical scanner (The Empty Child, New Earth); to resonate concrete and reattach barbed wire (The Doctor Dances); to destroy mechanical devices (The Long Game, Bad Wolf), to remotely activate an "emergency programme" in the TARDIS (The Parting of the Ways) and to light a candle (The Girl in the Fireplace). The setting to reattach barbed wire is setting 2428-D, implying that it has at least that many functions.

It's like a bloody magic wand, isn't it! I think someone should let the Terileptils at it again...

I think it's when it's used as a 'Get out of Jail Free' card that problems arise - I'd rather the Doctor use his ingenuity to get out of scrapes, than simply have a 'Hey Presto! The bomb is defused!" type use of the Sonic Screwdriver.

I think we should have a return to the Doctor building his own alien defeating devices out of radios, wire, and bits of perspex, like in P'twee's stories.

The chaos of that sketch is what I've always found hilarious, but the content is the very definition of "a bit out of order". Spike was "funny" like that, not a racist person from the biographies I've read (quite the opposite in fact), but somewhat fixated on race issues, as in the other sketch he did with half his face blacked up, the other white, and him arguing with himself.

I was really happy when the screwdriver broke, and impressed at how easily he threw away the broken thing... then pissed off when he pulled a new one out of his bag :D

Used FAR to often, and stupidly... like last week he used it to "unlock" a manhole cover... just pushing would have worked the same! Unless it makes things lighter too!
