Doctor Who

I must read the novelisation of that again, as the concept is quite cool, let down (as is so often the case) by the representation of it on screen.

I mean, the whole concept of the Daleks locked in stalemate with the equally logical Movellans is quite interesting. Until you see that the Movellans look like this:

Which is a fine look for a late 70's disco, but not so great for anything else.

I think we both agree it was the representation of Davros which pretty much destroyed that one :) (the image of him peddling around the place will stay with me forever)

Anyway, that aside it is a great idea, very similar to the climax of Wargames I suppose.

Back to the Dalek hybrid's abilities, I don't imagine they can be suggesting it's a physical advantage to be half human. Maybe just the commanders.

The worst thing is that the mask doesn't even fit the new actor. Plus of course Michael Wisher was so brilliant in Genesis that anyone would have been rubbish in comparison. At least the newer version from Davidson onwards had his heart in it.

As for the human flesh being weaker thing, didn't they basically say it was out of necessity? They were on the bones of their arses, panels from old skips bolted on to their skirts.

Of course, the looseness with which the term "evolution" is used in Who requires a fairly large leap of faith.

But the problem with that concept is that its easy to kill him and Sek.

Indeed. Which is why I'm suggesting it's not been done for any physical advantage.

Am I right in thinking that all the daleks in series one (the part humans created by the Emperor) are all gone? The ones that became religious nuts? Cos that kinda suggested what happens when you merge the two.

Judging by that episode, the scriptwriter must have enjoyed Peter Jackson's King Kong remake. Set in 1930s New York, making a point of noting that the depression was going on at the same time as all that theatrical glamour... and the absorption bit was strongly reminiscent of Andy Serkis's death by giant leech!

Well OK, that's not that many similarities... but it was what came to mind for me!

I thought Saturday's was daft and a bit rubbish. Just like I thought about Gridlock. While I really enjoyed the first two episodes of the series.

I'm obviously completely out of step with the prevailing mood!

My kids thought it was brilliant though, and can't wait to see more of the "human dalek" next week.

Wasn't that impressed with this week's episode. Felt it lacked any kind of emotional depth which has been one of the great strengths of the recent couple of series. Still, I'll watch the second part and see if it picks up. I think it was the showgirl and Laszlo. Thought they were pretty rubbish. Would have been much more interesting just focusing on the homeless people.

Well, in so much as they wrote a new, alternative history for them, which supercedes the old one.

Before - They were our brethren from a long lost twin planet, who gradually replaced their body parts to combat disease, and eventually excised their emotions. Wonderful.

Now - They are cyborgs developed on Earth by Trigger from Only Fools and Horses. Shite

Did it supersede the old one? I thought the old ones were acknowledged by the Doctor too?

she can't act.

in fact, she's worse than mickey.

Can't see it myself. I think she's great.

I bought a Tennant's Dr Who figure for £1 from a boot sale at the weekend! The likeness is really good!

For me so far, this series has been

1. Very good

2. Good

3. Superb

4. Very good

I'm enjoying it very kuch, so far. The last series was good in patches but only the Girl in the Fireplace and the ones with the devil REALLY stood out. I feel they really stood out because they really felt like classic Who and this series is feeling like that so far!

Can you describe this 'classic who'? I really don't get these comments. So far for me it's been

1. Rubbish

2. Good

3. Rubbish

4. OK

Thinking back I didn't really rate series 2 either. Girl in the Fireplace, School Reunion & New Earth were probably the best but there's so much of that season I haven't watched more than once.

The thing I liked about series 1 was it retained the enthusiasm of the original series but was very contemporary in its view on the world, relationships etc. All Classic Who means to me is 'always question what's around you'. Other than where it was a bit shit, eg the Key to Time running storyline, which is what Torchwood and this latest thread seem to be turning into.

She was really perfect in that part, and her acting range seemed well suited - all the little looks and reactions she had to situations and to the doctor were so much better than this gormless wannabe model grin the new one has.

I think you need to give her a bit longer. At the moment I'm taking her as a fish out of water who hasn't quite realised the impact of being a traveller in Time and Space, but who is quite intelligent. The fact that the Doctor doesn't reciprocate her feelings gives this a different flavour to the Rose era, but it's quite nice not having the Doctor and Rose run around like two gleeful kids in their own little gang all the time. That grated, for me.

The run is only 12 episodes, she shoudn't be so inconsequential a third of the way through. I don't see how introducing her as a 'doctor' and then asking one question per episode when they remember to makes her intelligent. Rose was smart, and identifiable as a normal kid, she took the lead in many stories and had excellent encounters with the girl in Unquiet Dead, School Reunion or Girl in the Fireplace for example. She was interesting immediately though, and I liked how her relationship with the Doctor (much like Sam from the 8th doctor) was clearly building towards something tragic, even if they could have done the event better IMO.

I just cannot think of a single interesting thing Martha has said or done. In that way, she arguably is a classic Who companion, but they were almost always rubbish, which is what I really liked about Rose (even if he nicked the idea from Sam and other characters in the books). Feels like a big step backward.

You make a good case, I can't really explain why I like her. Maybe it's that I only really care about watching the Doctor anyway, and she doesn't hog the limelight like Rose did.

Annoyingly this is maybe why I'm starting to dislike David Tennant :D
