Doctor Who

Thought last nights episode was very enjoyable. One thing struck me was how come it was raining if they were in a sealed under-city?

Also for someone who has had Dr Who completely pass them by but want to get into the whole story arcs etc. whats a good book to start with? Wiki kind of mentions that they are seperate to the TV shows so im a bit confused.

They're not real because they happen to swing both ways?

Well, yes in this case. It's not just that they all happen to swing both ways, it's the fact that they seem to chop and change their sexuality at the drop of a hat.

With regards to this weeks ep, the two old folks at the beginning that got eaten by the Macra - weren't there only two in the car? Don't you need three adults to go into the fast lane?

They lied, apparently.

I don't get it. How did they manage that? I thought the steering wheels were locked?

Also, was there any relevance to them clearly being inspired by the American Gothic painting? I thought they would mention it in Confidential but they didn't.

Well, that's the way it tends to go with bisexuals.

They don't tend to make an announcement saying "I'm going for boys this week, fellas!"

Didn't bother me, anyway. Ianto is fit as fuck. He can shag who he wants.

When I watched it just felt so unlike every other formulaic drama - so risky and brutally honest and recognisable to anyone, just blew me away. I liked how the first season of Who achieved the same thing - make something supposedly taboo normal so the smirkers feel they are the odd ones out.

I really need to watch Second Coming again, that was incredible too.

The BBC say that only the TV series is considdered to be official canon. The books and audio plays have all been written so as not to contradict the TV series though, so you can take them or leave them really. Things get more confusing when trying to reconcile the books with the audio plays however, as the Eighth Doctor stories of each follow completely different events, with different companions. Then of course you have the small matter of the various contradictions spread throughout the series itself. ^_^

I'd advise you to pick up a few of the classic DVDs if you're after Who history. Start with the "The Beginning" box-set to see where it all started, but due to the nature of the show it doesn't make much difference what order you watch the rest in. You could always do what I did, and just get one story for each Doctor to start with. Here are a few reccomendations, if you're interested.

First Doctor

The Beginning (Box-set including An Unearthly Child, The Daleks, and The Edge of Destruction)

Second Doctor

The Tomb of the Cybermen

Third Doctor

Spearhead From Space

Inferno

Fourth Doctor

Genesis of the Daleks (an absolute must see!)

Pyramids of Mars

The Talons of Weng Chiang

City of Death

Fourth/Fifth Doctors

New Beginnings (Box-set containing The Keeper of Traken, Logopolis, and Castrovalva - a trilogy of sorts featuring the return of The Master, and the fourth Doctor's regeneration)

Fifth Doctor

The Caves of Androzani

Sixth Doctor

Vengeance on Varos (pretty much the only good sixth Doctor story, outside of his surprisingly amazing audio plays that is)

Seventh Doctor

The Curse of Fenric

Eigth Doctor

The TV Movie (it's not like you have much choice! Again though, there are a whole load of audio plays to enjoy)

Those are just based on what I've seen, so its not a definitive "best of" list. They're all very good mind.

The trouble with Who is separating good stories from good TV. Being the best actor for the role, Tom Baker is watchable regardless of the storyline but I'd agree Genesis is absolutely must see TV for anyone with a heartbeat.

For sheer entertainment though I think you have to stick Daemons on that list too.

Pyramids of Mars

I'm gonna have to admit here, I don't get the Pyramids of Mars love. Suketh is an amazing villain, one of the best they've ever had, but the story itself is just so low-key and dull. It's such a huge conept, he's going to wipe out all life if freed, yet all we really get is the Doctor and Sarah faffing about in woods and cottages.

It's a decent story, almost enitrely for Suketh, but its classic status puzzles me.

Who said it was sealed?

The motorway was but the rest may have just built up around the motorway tunnel.

Couldn't they just have gone to an upper level instead of taking the motorway instead?

And thanks for all the recommendations, have to pick some of those up now. ^_^

Its just a shame they found the bumpiest street in the whole of London for it to travel down :)

I quite liked that. Cute little Daleks wandering lost around London.

Lots of mistakes in that story - most notably the 80s housing in the background in some of the shots. Brilliant story though. Best use of the Daleks post Genesis.

It's nearly as ridiculous as Davros 2 in Destiny, where you can see the actor's shoulders going as he frantically "pedals" to get about.

Such a muddled story, all that gubbins with the Doctor burying the Hand of Omega in a coffin for no reason at all, and that rubbish schoolgirl with the Emperor force lightning.

The bit where Ace beats up the Dalek with a baseball bat is ok, apart from the fact that Sophie Aldred couldn't act.
