Doctor Who

Its a show about an immortal timelord from another planet who travels time and space in police box.

What the FUCK are you talking about rationalising whether or not some plot point is feasible?

You seriously need to step away from the TV/Computer and take a breather.

Or get laid.

No need for that. Doctor Who isn't hardcore science fiction but it's not about magic either. Everything in it is supposed to at least make some logical sense. No harm in discussing that.

I hope Who stays on the air for a while, at least until I've written my amazing rip-off series so that I can piggyback on the popularity.

It's all about timing. I had a project that fell at the final hurdle because a commissioner in White City felt "there wasn't a place for sci-fi on the BBC." That was a year before Who started.

I really liked the opening episode, Smith and Jones. The whole politics of land / arbiters of justice thing made the Whoiverse seem very believable, big and important, and little humans insignificant and small. Not just some good guys versus bad guys like we've had in the past (Christmas Invasion - blurgh!). Plus, it was witty and clever and just a lot of fun. Very pleased to have this back on a Saturday night.

Could've done without the plasmivore using a plastic straw of all things, but hey-ho.

Second ep was okay, but not great. The ending, though... what is it with the Doctor and queens of England? Have to stay tuned for that!

Ep 3 looks to have lots of slightly bad CGI, but we'll see how that goes. I liked New Earth, so there is hope. If this series can stay away from lets-go-back-to-present-day-earth-again stories as much as possible, I'll be chuffed.

One of the things I really liked about the second episode was the line "It's like Back to the Future!" For people who've read/watched a lot of time-travel stories, it gets repetitive having everything explained each time, and this was an effective (and very funny) way around that.

...But no doubt someone will now point out that it was a lazy shortcut. Or that they've got kids who haven't seen BTTF and so didn't get it. :D

Lazy shortcut and didn't really make sense. :D (It implied that their going back is what changed the past, which I don't see how could be true.) Doesn't matter, though; none of it really makes that much sense if you scrutinise it too much. 8)

I thought that was a funny little reference to the idea of an alien sucking your braaaaains out with a straw, which seems like a classic staple of old sci-fi, even though I can't remember anything which actually used it.

(Oh wait, there was the Red Dwarf episode Psirens.)

I think it's more that Who tries to make the ordinary scary. I have a nephew who lost sleep over that, because you can find a straw - or a bloodsucking device, as he now sees it - in Tesco. If it had been some alien contraption then that fear would have been lost.

no its a fake, its clear when you read the interview with Mr Saxon and a sound clip of anthony ainley plays in the background...

The BBC wouldn't be so obvious about the BIGGEST plot point of this season

But what if it's intention is to deliberately mislead?

There are some very clever things about it. Whether it's legit or fan driven some of the blog stuff is interesting.

And just to compare with some of the content from legit virals. http://www.whoisdoctorwho.co.uk/visualdata.shtml

Don't forget the later start time this week folks! Its 7:40 for a change. There is however a but. Its if somehow 0-0 after 90 minutes in the fa cup draw of Man u v Watford then it gets postponed to next week. So lets hope watford beat the mancs 3-0 eh?

It better not get postponed, surely something else should drop off the schedule. I'll send boyatsea over to hit them with the stats.

Just watched 'City of Death' and realised that, bizzarely, comedy-cockney detective Duggan is actually Mr White, the big badguy at the end of Casino Royale.

Brilliant story though.

An all-time classic. Gave me the willies as a kid, and makes me laugh (in the right way) as an adult. A really clever little story, which manages to be convincing as historical drama, a comedy, a heist movie, and good sci fi, all at once.

It's not dropping something else that's the problem. They think the problem is that putting it on that much later will be too late for kids.

Ten minutes before Doctor Who starts, if the match is still being played, they should start playing the Who theme really loud on a continuous loop in the stadium to urge the players on. And put some Dalek & Cyberman 'streakers' on the pitch as well.

And what if the Grand National runs over!!!

Spoilered this, cos it's all current season speculation...

I really don't recommend reading that Saxon site if you're thick as pigshit. If it's official it's waaay too obvious, but if not I think it's an indication that this series MAHOOSIVE SURPRISE hasn't really been too difficult to work out simply on the basis of the series ad and episode one. That said, in a way it's about as important as that point shortly after the first season began airing that The Sun reported that the daleks were coming back. It's this season's equivalent of that, really. For me, the real interest in this season is whether they have the confidence to start building some new mythology for the show without spoiling the 'classic' lineage.
