Nice idea maybe, but it didn't really stand up as a working concept. At least, we had to take a massive leap of faith to believe that just saying stuff would make other stuff happen, because well, it's their technology innit?

I trust you never read, or to a lesser extent saw, Dune?

I recognised the bloke from Peep Show, although he did a good job in his mentalist role. Only caught the repeat and quite enjoyed it - the "words as power" stuff was a nice concept, and the aliens were pretty creepy in a kind of weird way. They almost looked like weird caricatures, though I just about bought it. Next week's show looks promising.

Mate, this is a programme about a guy who travels in time by winding a gramophone.

Yeah but no but yeah but...

I dunno, I can't explain why one thing is ok with me and one isn't. Perhaps it was just how convoluted everything semed to be, and yet so meaningless. The stuff in the Tardis serves as adding character to "The show", it doesn't have a plot hingeing on it. Besides, I'm not massively keen on all those cranks and things in the Tardis anyway.

I wouildn't want to convince you otherwise, I kinda like the perversity of it. I still cannot fathom how anyone enjoyed Eps1 of this series, and while I cringed through much of E2 (seriously.. Kev from Shameless?) I really thought it was fun. Benchmark is usually - if I was a kid, would I have liked this?

I spotted that too, although I was thinking it was someone on the production team who was a Doom fan - it definitely was a spot-on recreation of the logo.

Not only that, but it was the 'A' in UAC. Probably is only a Doom fan on the team, as I'm sure another Hell storyline isn't due so soon

The witches were straight out of Macbeth, more or less, in the way they acted. I guess the implication was that they inspired Shakespeare's depiction, and in turn our modern popular image. I liked them. :(

Another corker and the kids loved it. There were so many little things to enjoy - such as the "the end is nigh" bloke saying "I told thee so!"

I can't be the only one who thought Lilith was stunning but nobody seems to have mentioned her. I ended up Googling her (Christina Cole) but she's not done much by the looks of it. One to watch for the future I think.

And JP, I thought the Globe was round too (although I didn't tell the kids, I wanted them to find out from the show) so I was quite surprised when I heard the real answer.

RTD's explanation in Confidential wasn't very scientific either. "You can split the atom with numbers"

For it to make sense you need to accept the idea of 'psychic energy' which is presumably useable energy harvested from the brains of intelligent beings. The Globe itself being like a satellite dish to focus the signal and the audience being the source of the energy. If you can handle that, the idea that audible language can trigger the release of this energy isn't a massive leap. But then again there are probably simpler ways to get the audience excited like setting fire to the theatre.

Still cobblers but logical enough to make a fun story. Quite clever even.

I think you're both over thinking this one. If anything, the main thread was a bit too on the nose. Words are power, that's all he was saying. And they are. Mathematics might have made splitting the atom possible, but it would take someone giving the order to unleash one in anger. OK so there was a lot of hocus around making that idea *literally* true, but it made for a good climax to the show, especially as the audience thought it was part of the performance.

That's all fine, but why not just build a 14 sided building somewhere and just say the words themselves? I mean, they had a lot of power (flight, voodoo, shape changing) that it seemed like a lot of trouble to go to. I just couldn't suspend my disbelief.

The tone of it was good though, and it looked great. It was by no means the worst Who I've ever seen, just not a very convincing one.

Next week's looks like it might split opinion a bit. There seem to be a lot of elements for discussion anyway.

One thing I didn't like in the trailer for next week is that all the flying vehicles seem to be identical and they are all too neatly arranged in a 3D grid pattern.

what's wrong with making the best use of limited space?

Reality isn't that "clean." Full of identical vehicles with identical spaces. Obviously they would be using a 3D grid pattern, but it's just too clean they way it is all so evenly spaced to the inch. Something like The Fifth Element looks better and more realistic, IMO.

I too commented on this, I will reserve judgement until the full episode, there could be some amazing reason why they are like that ^_^

Did I imagine it or did they mention the city was 'New New York' in the trailer? Bit shit if so....

They did, and its the same New New York from "New Earth", complete with the cat people. I like the cat people. :(

Words define the world we live in. So words have power - its not the biggest jump in the world. The name is the thing, as they used.

A Victorian might well have the same reaction to the M25 at rush hour, if you see what I mean.
