Doctor Who

Really quite enjoyed it, although I was wondering how the hospital still had electricity... the Judoon were nicely realised and Martha is great as a character too, although her family seems to be a bit soap-style stereotypical. Some nice touches in there too. Anyone watched the end of Confidential on BBC Three after the repeat? Lots of exciting stuff to come!

That's that thing with Lovejoy innit?

Just thinking about Rose again, I'm so pleased that for the most part they've ditched the sillier elements that I so loathed back then. All the comedy mugging with the plastic Mickey, the Bin, etc. Comedy is still present, but it's so much more intelligent and refined now.

I recall finding one line half funny but I can't remember why. Intelligent and refined though? Predictable and smug more like it.

I've watched Smith & Jones twice now and mostly it leaves me cold. On paper it's the better of the three openers - but for me it's my least favourite. It's hard to say what's missing exactly as it had a stronger plot and better effects than the others, Martha was great and didn't disappoint.

RTD's normal sparkling dialogue didn't seem to be there though. I missed the playfullness and downright silliness he usually delivers. I wonder if this script was an attempt to tone that stuff down, perhaps in answer to the critics.

New Earth was very funny and Rose was just brilliant. This was merely solid for me. I respond more to the human stuff than the plot side of things which might explain my reaction. I still watch Rose every so often and I still love it.

The music is awful again. The same hyperactive, inappropriate, too loud, rubbish. Tone it down a bit!

I thought the music was possibly the best we've heard in the series so far. It all felt really fitting and often quite epic, with Martha's theme at the end being a thing of beauty. It was one of a number of things that made that episode feel like the entire franchise had been completely reborn again.

Indeed. Martha's Theme is possibly my favourite of Murray's scores so far. Beautiful.

RTD's normal sparkling dialogue didn't seem to be there though.

There were some lovely moments, such as when Anne Reid says the Doctor is a "funny little man, laughing at the darkness..." or something. There's also the nice bit when Martha speaks about losing Adeola, and you can see the connection in the Doctor's face as he looks at her and thinks about Rose.

It appears that Saxon has been referenced twice before this episode already, so he's been planned for a while.

He was in the Telegraph newspaper that the Abzorbaloff was reading in Love and Monsters and he may have been referenced in The Runaway Bride when a Mr. Saxon gave orders to fire at the ship.

Smug as hell though

Surely he was thinking about the fact that he (sort of) killed her cousin?

Well we all thought last week's was great and can't wait for episode 2 in less than an hour. The kids want to see how many sides the Globe Theatre has for a competition on Totally Doctor Who...

As predicted the loss of Rose has been completely swept away now that Martha's here. The girls love her already. Another fantastic role model!

I really want to see more of the Judoon. I'd love to see a story with them fighting alongside the Doctor. After all, they are good guys really.

And I think the reference to the Doctor's brother was a deliberate red herring. There was an interview with David Tennant in the Times last week and he said RTD sometimes puts little references like that in just to get the hardcore fans talking. Then again, that could be a double bluff...

I think that 'Cyberwoman' episode was the worst thing that could have happened to Torchwood. Like many others I watched the first few, cringed a bit at some parts but was willing to persevere through the daft bits and see if it ended up being any good. Then Cyberwoman happened, and it was awful, made no sense, and had some of the biggest plot holes and gaps in logic I'e ever seen in a mainstream program. It was terrible.

I wrote it off as shit after that and stopped watching, along most of the other 'undecided' viewers it seemed. Which is really a shame because literally, after that epsiode, things got good. Really, really good. From episode 5 onwards they almost entirely stopped awkwardly shoehorning 'mature' stuff and started earning their post-watershed spot with some really great storylines. Episode 10, 'Out of Time' was Torchwoods' 'Girl in the Fireplace', and if I'm honest it was almost as good as it. The finale was fucking mental.

If, like me, you wrote it off as shit after Cyberwoman honestly I'd say give it another try. If you get bored inbetween waiting for the new Who just get them off www.guba.com and start from 5 onwards.

It was okay. I wouldn’t call it good but rather entertaining television.

The Shakespeare time travel story thingy has been done to death in so many other shows. They could have done something better than the whole “the Doctor and his assistant inspired the greatest plays ever written”, was a bit of lazy script writing in that respect I thought. The whole Back to the Future line was interesting but rather than base it on the fading away bit it would have been clever if they had gone a step further and mentioned the alternate time lines/branching stuff. Made it just that extra bit more sciency or geeky if you will

Also im getting a sense that this assistant is going to fall in love with the Doctor. I really hope that’s not going to happen.
