Doctor Who

I thought Rose was brilliant, turned me around on the whole thing, great chemistry between the two, even if the Nestenes were wasted. This was just self indulgent lazy crap, RTD clearly bored of the whole thing already.

Yes. That's one thing RTD always gives off. Boredom.

He nips off halfway through interviews for a piss, then comes back and tells them just to turn the cameras off because he "fancies a kebab" and it's "only Doctor Who." He's never enthusiastic about anything.

DYSWIDT?

EDIT - Yes, I really liked the Judoon. Thought they might be a bit panto, but there were actually rather menacing.

Have you seen Rose recently? It is really bad.

This episode is far from perfect but it is head and shoulders above the very iffy openers that had gone before.

Funnily enough I'm not one of the ones who picks on his episodes, I love the guy. Doesn't change the fact that that episode was pretty much without merit, or any kind of risk, which I thought was a hallmark of the first season, if it hadn't been Who I'd have turned off.

And they're not bad guys either. They're just doing their job. But in a "we are bastards" kinda way. They're like traffic wardens. I'd be glad to see them back, and I think they're maybe the best of the "new" baddies.

All the Saxon references are already exciting me.

I've got it on my iPod along with half the first season, like I said it's a lousy plot but as a reintroduction to the series (for anyone who's not read the later books) it was wonderfully handled, and the casting & the dialogue between them was just  It's just great.

Will someone tell me when saxon was mentioned? I appear to have missed it.

I alluded to the Judoon's Judge Dreddness in an earlier posting, they must be some kind of subtle tribute.

I enjoyed the episode, fairly unchallenging but good fun. It did remind me how much affection I have for the Doctor and indeed Tennant's Doctor. I think I'll be miffed when his tenure ends.

There was a Vote Saxon poster in the alley behind the girl at the end, and she mentioned him by name earlier.

And I reckon the Doctor's comment about

not having a brother anymore

is gonna turn out to be incorrect, coincidentally...

You could be right, there.

I did think when he said that, actually. But I'd forgotten about it by the end. It's those kind of things you have to watch out for.

I was just about to post (hoho) about that, funnily enough. Got the impression this was something he'd done in between series two and three. Makes a change from references to his life outside the shows being banging on about famous people, which gets on my tits a bit. Only two references to that this evening, which I guess isn't too bad.

I do hope they use the big arc of this series to start to create some new mythology for the character. This could really be where the show starts to build a proper new identity for itself if they play it right. So far, the new series has seemed to be more about jettisoning the backstory of the Doctor - killing off galifrey etc - which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but there's a gap there as a result and I get really excited when I think about the possibilities here. And scared, cos it could all go a bit Scrappy Doo if they bollock it up, obviously.

Well, it would appear that Smith & Jones did very well, pulling in 8.2 million viewers according to overnight figures - 200,000 up on New Earth's overnight figure, which eventually nabbed an official figure of 8.6 million. It was the most watched show on Saturday night, with a 39.5% share of the audience, and an impressive Appreciation Index figure of 88 - the third highest figure since the show returned in 2005, and the highest ever for an opening episode of a new series.

970,000 people also caught the repeat on BBC Three on Sunday - the highest figure Doctor Who has ever received on the channel.

Right, now the forum's back...

Thought that was a preeety good series opener, much more satisfying than Rose, and head-and-shoulders above New Earth. The only things I didn't like about it were the Judoon and the plasmavore. The Judoon, not because of what they were, but because they were just anthropomorphic Rhino's, which came off as lazy. We've had cat aliens, now rhino aliens. what next? Anthropomorphic Elk? It'd have been so much better had they played with the rhino design to make it more alien - remove the ears, alter the horns (maybe a cluster of horns or something), given them different eyes, whatever. Can't fault them technically though - nice bit of fx.

The plasmavore, because I'd have liked to see an alien (looking) baddie rather than Wendolene Ramsbottom.

That's the point though. That and the straw. My nephew found her much more scary than he did the Judoon. To make everyday objects - like old women and straws - scary is a bigger trick, if you ask me.

The straw didn't work for me. When she first mentioned it I took it as a nice bit of black humour, but when she started walking towards the chief of medicine in a menacing manner I wanted to cringe. Having said that, if others (especially kids) found it creepy then who am I to complain?

Just watched the repeat (missed it on Saturday).

I thought it was excellent. Just a really good, solid episode. As others have said, much better than the openers of Series 1 and 2. I prefer Martha to Rose straight away, probably because she's a bit more adult. Rose used to get on my nerves a bit.

Some "complaints" though:

The Judoon were great but - haven't they just spunked a really good Sontaran suit design on them? I mean, apart from the policemen aspect they looked and acted just like I imagine New Who Sontarans would. This makes me think we won't be seeing them as monsters anytime soon, which is a bit of a shame.

The music is awful again. The same hyperactive, inappropriate, too loud, rubbish. Tone it down a bit!

I nearly cheered when the Sonic Screwdriver got melted. At last, I thought, they'll have to find another way for the Doctor to get out of problems. But alas, he just went out and got a new one. I hope they don't use it all the time, it's so, so lazy.

But still, just a really enjoyable romp. I always forget what a nice, simple pleaseue it is to be able to sit down and watch a brand new, never seen before episode of Doctor Who, and to not know how each story will end.

Plus it seems we have our new "Bad Wolf". Saxon - let the speculation begin.
