Doctor Who

Aye, this was surprisingly excellent. Only things that weren't were the bit where the Doctor sprang back up to life (as there didn't seem to be any reason for it) and the fact that he got a new sonic screwdriver at the end. Given that it was being over-used in the last series, I was quite glad to see the Doctor deprived of it but if the quality of writing manages to stick around this level for the remainder of the series then it might not be a problem.

It was a bit silly when he was all 'Oh no! My screwdriver is borken' and then just unplugged it...

Thats the best opening episode of Doctor Who. Martha seems a decent replacement and it didn't have as many crappy pop culture references as most of T Davies' scripts.

I was hoping they'd be brave enough and

actually do away with the sonic screwdriver which has become a get out of jail free card for many an episode in the past

.

The Judge Dredd Rhinos weren't bad.

I'm hoping her family was something of a red herring, just there to bookend the episode, introduce her character and not really playing a part in the rest of the series. Considering how fed up Martha looked at the end I don't think we'll be getting as many Rose-style 'I want to go home and see my family' stories.

Well, that certainly qualifies as the best season opener of the new series so far. :D

Martha looks arousing promising, and the whole thing felt like a big budget classic episode. Lots of running down corridors and stuff. Also, those "planet Zovirax" androids are almost certainly supposed to be the same as the ones used by the Cybermen in Earthshock.

Loved the Zovirax gag Martha used after the black Stig got a bike suit full of radiation. You remember that advert? The one with the stupid bitch who'd keep her black bike helmet on all the time, at the gym, pool, work, just because she had a cold sore, boo fuckin hoo!

Watched it with two friends who weren't interested, but the Zovirax gag came up about a minute after they were taking the piss out of the very same ad, which shut them up! Enjoyed it too - David Tennant is really starting to fit and Martha is nicely written... Much better than your normal Davies ep, to be honest.

Loved it, great opening for S3 but the Jones family as recurring characters could be a right pain in the arse. "We'll be revisiting them many times over the course of the series."

Balls.

S3 montage at the end of Confidential was great too.

I thought the same thing until I saw her hips and arse at the end.

Slightly hippy but nothing to worry about in a perfectly normal woman. Totally wrong on the arse though, looked great in those jeans.

Just who is Saxon, then?

Did I miss that reference?, quick recap pls.

Definitely better than both Rose and New Earth as season openers go.

The Judoon were great, and the new companion already seems comfortable. Too much running through hallways though.

^ Agree with this. I watched New Earth earlier this week to refresh my memory. Smith & Jones managed to keep the pace that is needed for an opener, but wasn't so fast you couldn't keep track. Enjoyed it a lot.

I think Freema is better at the slow moments than the fast, but it looks from watching Confidential that those actions sequences were her first few days on set, so she may get better at that. Really liked Martha as a character too - all the flirting. The series trailer at the end of Confidential looked immense - like they've thrown a hell of a lot more money at it.

Why do they have the same bloke doing the [same] voice for all the aliens?

Nicholas Briggs is like Who royalty, though!

Yes, just yes.

I thought that was very good and bested Rose and New Earth. Rose wasn't great but that was covered up by my 'OMG! Who is BACK' feelings!

I thought Rose was brilliant, turned me around on the whole thing, great chemistry between the two, even if the Nestenes were wasted. This was just self indulgent lazy crap, RTD clearly bored of the whole thing already.
