Doctor Who

Isn't that because he's dead? I presume they've cobbled this audio together from some previous interviews or something.

He did the commentary for Traken a few months before he died in 2004. From what i understand, these commentaries are done months, sometimes years before the dvd is released.

Ainley was great as the master (bit too young for Delgado's master) and at conventions apparently really freaked the kids out by keeping in character

Because of the availability of actors they often record the commentaries in blocks, so the Traken one was recorded at the same time as Earthshock (Matthew Waterhouse lives in the States now and flew over to record them) and the Logopolis one was also recorded then to tie in with Janet Fielding.

Agreed on the 45 minutes thing. Although the format works well for most shows, in Doctor Who the setting changes each week and you have to establish the setting, introduce the characters, initiate the plot, resolve the plot and wrap things up all within 45 minutes, and it's simply not enough time. Both of the Christmas specials seemed much more complete at an hour than the average episode does at 45 minutes. Even Torchwood didn't seem as rushed as this does, because the setting isn't so wildly varied each week.

I'd like to see a better story-arc across the series too.

Definitely. One of the good things about Torchwood was the way in which it did have a proper arc - not just in the Doctor Who sense of repeating the name of the end-of-series bad guy repeatedly throughout the series, but in terms of having characters actually change and develop as a result of their experiences and occasionally refer back to what they'd been through before. It added to the series a great deal - without losing the "single story" nature of each individual episode.

Bloody Hell! That's actually quite exciting - only six weeks to go! :D

Actually, whilst I'd be delighted if it was the 17th of March, I have a funny feeling it's much more likely to be April - they've just pushed back the release of the next classic DVD (Survival) by a couple of weeks to the middle of April, and it would make sense for them to have done this in order to benefit from the hype surrounding the return of the new series to TV.

I want more classic series DVDs - can't believe there won't be any more now until April. :D

Its defo not April and defo March. I cant say who I heard it off as he is doing quite an important job on Who and he's a friend(although you could probably work it out if you read some of my posts)

All I know is the March Doctor Who Magazine has the Ep 1 preview and since S1 the preview is always in the mag the month of transmission. Plus they have something special planned for Easter :D

Please tell me you're kidding with that statement. Still, stroke of luck eh? And a coffee tin managing to stay in the same place for fifty years AND being in plain sight and all that. They should all give up their investigations now and just buy scratchcards.

I might be wrong, but didn't Balis want them to find the clues, so he made sure the clues remained in view? He wanted the rift to be opened up. Didn't he scratch off the final part of the second clue so they'd have to resort to opening the rift using the machine?

Anyays, just watched the double parter and I thought it was good fun. I enjoyed the first episode a lot and Balis was an excellent character - I would like to see more of him.

The gay kiss felt a little shoe-horned in. A little silly.

Definitely, he was the best thing about the two parter in my mind. A genuinely unnerving character. Although to be honest I'm a bit disappointed with the explanation they gave for him, being the servant of some kind of evil god-thing is a pretty stock idea.

I suppose I wasn't altogether clear, despite 300 gig not being enough, it's still a problem I would prefer to have.

Despite having early misgivings about Torchwood I got into it in the end and it looked LUSH in hd.

a friend did enjoy gloating over his 42" plasma and Sky HD. Torchwood will look just as nice when its released on HD-DVD though. Please release it on HD-DVD BBC.

It'll probably look even better as I imagine bandwidth is greater on hdvd. Shame about Who. :(

Its all down to budget. HD means digital effects need to look that bit better, hence more post production work.

Actually I was wondering what did Abbadon look like in HD? it want that hot an effect in SD so I'm quite curious.

From what I recall it was one of those obviously cgi type moments but there aren't many things that fool me in that respect. I think I'll have to re-watch to give a fully objective opinion. I'm not sure cgi effects degrade with resolution, I guess they're just as obvious but higher res and therefore not necessarily worse if that makes sense. Obviously make up could easily look less convincing and is perhaps why Who is less desirable in hd...

Some more speculation on the S3 start date from the OTT blog:

07 February 2007

DOCTORIN' THE SCHEDULES

When will Doctor Who be back on telly? Well, there are a few possible dates floating around - but none of them seem to be Easter. This week, TV Times has stuck its neck out declared it'll defo be March. I'm going to try and be more specific than that and predict March 24. This is based on various bits of gossip that have come my way and, er, some guesswork.

March 17 has to be out, for two reasons. The mighty Dancing on Ice will reach its finale that night (if my sums are right), something Who doesn't want to cross. And, so I'm informed, Wales take on England in the rugby that evening, with a 5.30pm kick off.

I had heard a rumour that, yes, the 17th was the original plan, meaning the two-part *** story (which is third in the running-order, isn't it?) would play out as a double-bill over the Easter weekend. Where a 24th start date would leave that notion, then, I'm not sure.

Have you heard anything?

There's also this little snippet in the comments on the article:

Ooo, Steve Berry's got sources! Anyway, the Who press officer has told me that the 24th hasn't been confirmed, but "that's the date we're working towards".

*** Edited in case someone has spoiler-fear.

That speculation was true as of last month. The 2 parter as a Easter treat and everything.

But in TV land things change as we know. Wonder what will happen now. AIUI they really worked hard to get that 2 parter done for Easter.
