Doctor Who

Castrovalva is one of my favourite Whos ever :(

Yeah I have very clear childhood memories of this era and the season before.

The great thing is my son is away to bed now, after spending the evening watching all 3.

There's a cracking and frank documentary on Logopolis with Tom talking about leaving and being a bit of a sod, and all with his usual wit and charimsa. The man is a bonafide British HERO. Why isnt he Sir Tom Baker.

Surely only a matter of time.

It's also my favourite regeneration ever - sticking anything before the opening titles was unheard of those days. The camera panning down, with music twinkling in the background. Brilliant.

I can even forgive the blatant "So HEWASTHEDOCTORALLTHETIME!" dub because the rest is so ace. :(

Someone left a copy of The Sun open at work at a possibly spoilerific "Here's where we tell you what happens in the show so you don't have to watch it" page. They think series three's big returnee is going to be:

The Master, played by wossname from Life On Mars.

I don't even want to know. Don't tempt me!

My New Beginnings box-set turned up on Tuesday, and I've been watching my way through The Keeper of Traken. It's pretty damn good so far, with only the effects letting it down a little, naturally. That's part of the package with old Who though.

The BBC7 Big Finish series is coming along nicely too. It has however made it all the more clear that the TV series needs to be a bit more adventurous with its settings.

"The mockery we would get walking into a forest and saying that we're on the planet Kobol. If you think we had one or two bad reviews in the second series, they would become like a machine gun the moment we started doing that."

Y'see, I don't think it would matter (as long as it wasn't overused). Every planet visited in Stargate SG1 resembles the forests around Vancouver, and yet it's never shattered my suspension of disbelief. Stick an extra moon in the sky and a big alien building in the distance and the job's a good 'un. It's the quality of the writing tha holds the attention. Plus I think I'd rather have the Forest of Dean standing in for the planet Kobold once or twice than yet another tired instance of Cardiff being used as a makeshift London.

Oh I expect theres a few visits to Alien planets this year.

I wonder if it was the Master picking Jack up at the end of Torchwood, rather than the Doctor ?

The New Beginnings box is aces, and a total bargain from Amazon. They're pretty choc full of extras for single disc releases. Want to see Sarah Sutton on Swap Shop? Course you do! Well I do, Nyssa FTW.

They're the first discs to tempt me to listen to the commentaries too, especially Keeper of Traken that has Anthony Ainley on it.

Do all Type 40 TARDIS sound the same? Would the Doctor hands react like that to any timelords presence or just its previous owners?

I seem to remember the Master's tardis making the same vworp'ing sound in the Delgado/Ainley years. Jack is surposed to return to Dr Who at the end of the series, as is the Master. Might just be coincidence though

It's not like audiences aren't used to Earth locations being used for alien worlds. It never hurt Star Trek, Star Wars, Aliens, Firefly, BSG, or more relevantly classic Doctor Who. I've just watched The Keeper of Traken, and despite the shonky FX and flimsy sets I had absolutely no trouble suspending my disbelief. The last series of Doctor Who featured two off-world stories, and both made a pretty convincing effort.

Just noticed this on Digital Spy:

Davies wants Britney for 'Doctor Who'

By Daniel Kilkelly

Russell T Davies has revealed that he wants pop star Britney Spears to appear in an episode of Doctor Who.

Rather than asking Spears to help the Doctor to save the world, the show's writer Russell T Davies wants her to be cast as a group of aliens cloned to look like the 25-year-old singer.

"I'd love Britney to do it - it would be so much fun," Davies is quoted by the Daily Star as saying. "I'm not sure if she'll come to Cardiff where the show is shot so I'm nagging the BBC to fund a Hollywood special."

FFS no! ;)

Surely some kind of joke?

I've given up on the whole franchise now. I didn't really like a lot of series 2 of Doctor Who, I hated all of Torchwood and I wouldn't touch fucking K9 with a fucking cattle prod.

As Mr. jerellis1 said above, the pop culture/cardiff thing is tired already and I hate the 'sexual intrigue' that's been injected into the series. Time I moved on from the whole thing.

Torchwood really is awful stuff isn't it? Which is such a damn shame because it looks BRILLIANT in HD.

Such twisted irony...

Thank god for Big Finish - it's like the original series never went away, except now it's better, more grand and more imaginative and I can watch every episode in bed with my eyes shut. ;)

going to listen to Circular Time this week, I've heard its wonderful.

Plus if your such a Big Finish fan, should you give the next series more of a chance now Gary Russell is involved in such a big way

I have a feeling S3 will be a lot better than 2.

WE have Shakespear (not in Cardiff)

New York(again not Cardiff)

Utopia(defo not Cardiff)

PLus another ALien PLanet that hasnt had its name confirmed yet.

Oh and Jerellis you made a mistake not watching Sarah Jane it was much better than Torchwood.

Are the McGann audios that've been airing on Radio 4 (all of which I've managed to miss) going to be released by Big Finish?

Fingers crossed (although, for the most part, I really enjoyed S2). I definitely hope that, now that Rose has gone, we'll have a lot less episodes set in faux London. I don't mind stories set in contemporary Britain, but it'd be nice to do something different with the idea, a la Image of the Fendahl or something.

It'll be the planet Kobol. ;)

They're being released at the same time they air on BBC7, well, a day later or something. You can buy them from the BF site.

Watched Keeper of Traken last night with the commentary on. Matthew Waterhouse (Adric) is a very good 'moderator' and its nice to hear Anthony Ainley although he doesnt say too much. Theres a nice little bit at the end of the 4th episode as a tribute - only 5 seconds or so but its enough. :)

Also, the documentary on the Logopolis disc is very interesting and Tom is very blunt about how he acted. i.e a bit of a shit towards the end of his time as the Doc but hes a loon so i forgive him

Havent watched Castrovalva yet but if its still under £18 at Amazon, this 3 disc set is one of the best value i've ever bought and i recommend it to anyone.

New Series

Oh, as for the new series (which i mostly think is great) I watched 'Fear Her' again the other day..... Christ its awful! Worst of the new series IMO

Series 3 needs to be a lot darker though.

In answer to eighthours, I don't think its a backlash, its just always had its haters on this forum, and again its mainstream success seems to instantly mean its cool to hate it now. This is the UK after all

S2 wasnt as good as S1 IMO but It highlights did exceed the highlights of S1. TGIF for example being my fave Who ever and I've just this minute finished watching Army Of Ghosts for the first time since transmission and you know what, I initially thought it was a 3-4/5 episode. After just watching it again its definitely a 5/5 it has pace, it has humour, it probably made a million kids terrified of Cyberman in one scene alone and I bloody loved every second of it.

toneeb is right about the Doc on Logopolis though Tom is bloody amazing on it. I've still got 2 eps of Castrovalva to watch but I really enjoyed the New Beginnings boxset. I recommend watching the trails and continuities if you want to feel 5 again. Seeing the old BBC globe and trails is a very nostalgic feeling indeed.

I've Listened to Circular Time now and IMO its one of the best audios for a long time. There are 4 separate tales all featuring 5th Doc and Nyssa, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter and I have to say Autumn is a very moving piece of drama in its own right. Doesnt sound it (the doctor plays cricket in Stockbridge and Nyssa writes a book about Traken and falls in love, but its really good.

I highly recommend it especially for those who havent tried the audios before as it requires no prior knowledge really. Plus David Warner as Issac Newton = B)

S3 is gonna be cool.

I thought "Winter" in Circular Time was brilliant. They are a really good set of four individual stories.

re the backlash, on the Christmas Day Confidential my missus said about RTD "he's looking remarkably smug these days isn't he?" and in some ways he has the right to but come on, Britney Spears? FFS.
