Doctor Who

Sooooo... obviously the show is still on but:

1. How did Owen pretty much immediately find the bit for Rift machine in that grandfather clock?

2. How did Gwen find Toshiko's card? I mean, it wasn't exactly a super detailed treasure hunt, was it?

They were hoping you wouldn't notice.

He was building the entire series up to that kiss, wasn't he?

However, most members of the public remain ignorant of aliens as they have (as put by the Doctor) "an amazing capacity for self-deception" (see Sunnydale Syndrome). Some people explain the events of these invasions as "mass hallucinations" caused by psychotropic drugs planted by terrorists in our water.

Taken off the Wikipedia entry for the Whoniverse.

I was really, really hoping there wouldn't be a massive reset button bringing Rhys back. But there was.

And why were they surprised at Jack getting up from being shot in the head? Didn't they, or at least some of them, see him doing exactly that before? As well as recovering from other death inducing stuff.

I did like the idea of people dying simply by being in that monsters shadow though.

And the Tardis being a sneaky bastard.

I really enjoyed it - enough that I hope it comes back for a second series (which is something I never thought I'd say).

The BBC confirmed just before christmas that it'll return by the end of 2007 and premiere on BBC2, not BBC3.

Suitably daft for the end of series finale. To be honest I thought the giant monster spoiled it but up till that point it was excellent, even if they did completely duck the question of who the creepy old man was and how he did what he did.

Torchwood is surely the gayest science fiction programme ever.

4/5 for both eps for me.

Thought they were both pretty damn good epiosde.

Though the ending did strongly appeal to my fanboy streak.

Must have been pretty good as the mum in law was crying at the end and the other half was questioning me about S2 and wheres Jack gone.

VWORP VWORP indeed.

If only Gwen had said

"I heard a strange wheezing groaning noise and he'd just disappeared"

Torchwood is surely the gayest science fiction programme ever.

Wasnt the Fight Club episode proof enough of that for you.

They seemed to sweep the whole apocalypse/end of days thing under the carpet. All the talk of stuff coming through the rift, the plague returning etc but then really went nowhere else with it except a CGI monster turning up who was dispatched after 2 minutes.

Up until that point it pretty damn good I thought, I don't even watch the show, the wife has it on and I hear/see bits of it in background.

I thought both those episodes were bloody excellent, and pretty much exactly what I expected the whole series to be like before it started. The first one was really touching, and the second was another one of those proper "adult Who" episodes that make it all worthwhile. Some of the drama was undermined somewhat though by the announcement of a certain actor's involvement with the second series, not to mention Doctor Who, but that didn't really matter.

Also, that bit at the end was amazing. :D

They can't of been confident of a renewal, hence the nice and tidy wrap-up. I mean, christ, Jack going off with the doctor is something that should've happened once the series had ended for good.

It's starting to grate. It might as well be the intergalactic branch of the gay and lesbian alliance.

While that's a fair comment regarding Tosh's little encounter, and Gwen's "lesbian" kiss, it seems a little petty to scoff at Jack's gay relationships. He's been openly bisexual since his very first appearance in Doctor Who, and as such it would be a little silly for him not to indulge this aspect of his personality.

Mogster, the fact Jack's promiscuous should be seen independently of his bisexuality.

Just for the PC record...

His orientation would seem a lot more believable and a lot less contrived if the rest of Torchwood weren't constantly trying to outdo him on the sex front.

I know it's panto season, but the whole "Sleeping Beauty" kiss was a little bit too far fetched even for a scifi show.

Indeed :S I was expecting the Doctor's hand to play a role in the inevitable revival, allowing for some vague reason about it still containing a tiny bit of the regeneration energy or something.

I thought the finale was a big letdown. It was all too rushed - there were loads of good ideas in there, none of which was given adequate space. In fact, I think the entire premise would've been better served had it been a huge story arc over the entire season. As it was, there were just too many loose ends and leaps of faith for the two episodes. The Manger character in particular was worthy of far more screen time and back story (maybe this is still to come?), and the actor portraying him gave a nicely malign performance.

Looking back on the whole series, there are (for me at least) a couple of significant flaws:

Firstly, the lack of internal consistency and logic. Far too many coincidences and leaps of faith. Plus the fact that, for a top-secret organisation, Torchwood is about as confidential as the Millenium Stadium - it seems that everyone in the Cardiff area is aware of the team!

Secondly, and this is a major point for me, apart from Jack, I have no emotional attachment to any of the other Torchwood members at all. I read a week or so ago that one of the team would be killed in the finale and I honestly wouldn't have cared if it had been any one of them other than Jack. There seems to be more to dislike about them than there is to like, and the entire team seems more than happy to turn on one another at the slightest provocation. I don't know if it's the actors of the characters at fault here, but it's not really working. When you consider the strength of the relationships created between the characters in Doctor Who (The Doctor & Rose in particular), it's disappointing that some similar chemistry couldn't have been imparted here.

Hopefully the show will improve with the second series - it still has great potential (although I still wish we'd got a UNIT spin-off instead :D), but I think it still has some way to go before this is more fully realised.

The CGI monster was laughably bad, and completely drained all tension from the ep. Which was a shame, as it was good up till then.

Why was Jack dead for days that time, and then resurrect? No logic to it whatsover.

Also, has anyone else noticed that Tosh has just one "acting" expression - that slightly confused and uncomfortable look? Seriously, every fucking time anything happens. And even if nothing's happening. It's starting to seriously irritate me.
