Doctor Who

Yeah, you're right about that. It was more than a little bit dodgy! Actually, the whole premise of Susie having "planned" all this was a little weak. It would have worked a lot better as an opportunistic venture, with her thinking "on the fly".

It's a stupid plan. Why use the ISBN from the book? Why not use a number that only Suzie could possibly know?

loved the references to there actually being something after death, but it's not nice, it's evil and it's coming for Jack.

the ISBN thing REALLY annoyed me, it was daft - but I thought the episode as a whole was great.

Must admit, since the aboration that was 'cyberwoman', it's been much better - seems to be consistently good with only 2 clunkers so far. Much like series 2 of Dr Who tbh.

I think it's safe to say its shit:

Captain Jack being rubbish. Shiny-faced, bad acting, rubbish American.

Torchwood being incosistent. Is it sectret or not? Make your fucking mind up.

Cliches Galore. Hackneyed dialogue and rubbish acting. Except Gwen. She has potential. Sometimes.

Every storyline has been done before and done better.

It's so adult. Har har. TITS AND HARDONS!!!!

People switching sexuality for no reason. For no reason.

This is what happens when your show's creator arbitrarily decides that everyone in the principle cast has got to have a same-sex relationship in the first season. I'm not sure what sort of point he's trying to make, so far the message seems to have been "bisexual people are sex maniacs, alien sex maniacs, or people under the influence of alien sex maniacs".

Anyone get the soundtrack released on iTunes today? It's rather lovely, and has most of the really memorable cues from the last two series. I'm really getting into the theme from Doomsday again.

Will get it soon, but it was a joy to witness the whole thing live in Cardiff last month.

"The Impossible Planet" is a superb theme.

Out of the woodwork, you cunts. Come on. Own up.

The top 5

1. David Tennant - 28.2%

2. Tom Baker - 26.5%

3. Christopher Eccleston - 11.4%

4. Jon Pertwee - 9.6%

5. Patrick Troughton - 8.8%

Better than Baker after only fourteen episodes? Utter bollocks.

Not me I'd have given McCoy the top spot

Then Tom, then Tennant, then Eccles.

'Spaced' star Stevenson joins 'Doctor Who'

Wednesday, December 6 2006, 11:28 GMT

By Ben Rawson-Jones, Entertainment Reporter

Former Spaced star Jessica Stevenson will appear in the third season of the revived Doctor Who.

33-year-old Stevenson will play a character called Joan in two episodes directed by Charles Palmer - the son of renowned actor Geoffrey Palmer, who himself starred opposite Jon Pertwee in the 1970 Doctor Who story 'The Silurians'.

An insider told The Sun: "The role will play to her comedy strengths."

Simon Pegg, who starred alongside Stevenson in the cult Channel 4 comedy Spaced, played the malevolent role of The Editor in a first season episode of Doctor Who entitled 'The Long Game'.

Not sure about the "role will play to her comedy strengths" part - I'm not too keen on 'comedy' in Who but, then again, there was an awful lot of humour in The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances, and that was acers.

It wasn't a "comedy" episode, though - the jokes arose naturally from the situation. As opposed to Doctor Who trying to do out-and-out comedy, which is just ghastly.

What about the bit in Love and Monsters with the buckets?

What about love and monsters as a whole.

Meant to post about Stevenson last week. I think the comedy thing is a bit of a fib, I garner she's in Paul Cornells 2 parter, which is rumoured to be a reworking of Human Nature, and Joan in Human Nature isnt funny. She's lovely but not funny.

Yeah, that's what I mean - it was a serious episode containing some good wisecracks. I liked Love & Monsters too but have to admit that I'd prefer those types of 'light' story not to be a regular thing.

I was thinking the other night how anyone could ever think of John Pertwee as their fave doctor. I know the show as a whole suffered from 70's attitudes - the story I was watching was The Time Warrior, but although it's Sarah Jane's first story (good), it also features lots of 'Get me a cup of tea Smith!'-esque lines from the doctor (bad). He just seems like a shirty know-it-all, really. Am I missing something? Is there a 'classic' third doctor story/performance - a Pertwee 'City of Death' that could turn me around?

Maybe it's just a matter of liking whichever doc you grew up with. I still think Peter Davison was great as a result, although I'm still man enough to realise that despite this Tom Baker was objectively (winky) the best.

Although I really liked Sylvester McKoy in Ghostlight... And I think if I saw enough Patrick Troughton he might become my fave.

Tennant better than Eccles? Inconceivable!

Agreed.

Wild madness.

My doctors are Tom Baker, Eccles, Colin Baker, McCoy and the Pete. in no particular order.

Tennant ain't in with a shout yet.

Pertwee's Doctor was a dick. I wish the Master had chinned him.

GhostLight is amazing. Colin Baker is the King of Cunts, and for that, a prince among Doctor Men.

Has anyone been watching the classic Who on Mondays on BBC 4? A few weeks back it was Pertwee (I think) and the Autons, and the last two it was Baker and the Green Bubblewrap Monsters (was it "Ark in Space?") Cracking stuff

You know, Torchwood would be a lot more dramatic if they had more than two characters anybody gives a damn about. As it stands they can't afford to kill off anyone I'd actually miss.

Good to see they've discovered foreshadowing this week, though, hopefully this thing in the darkness is Lovecraft-tastic.

Wait. That's a regular thing? Fuck! I thought Pertwee and the Autons was just a one off for Science Fiction Britannia like that episode of Doomwatch they showed.

Sorry but Ghostlight, whilst brilliant, relied upon you to read the novelisation to actually make proper sense of it. Its all about Remembrance and Fenric for me I bloody love both those tales and always will. Especially if you adore the New Adventures McCoy.

Tennant holds higher regard for his sheer excellence in TGITF and the fact he made me cry like a girl for his final scenes in that episode.

Eccles would be No1 if he had another season in him. I will say this though, I will always miss the 9th Doctor.

I still think RTD needs to write something of the quality that is the second coming. I cant listen to Orbitals You Lot without me thinking how good Who could be if he allowed himself to write for adults rather than families.

Hmm. Not too sure about that (repeated) episode. Too much suspension of disbelief about the lack of rigor mortis, brain matter, blood loss, etc. etc. and yet Susie's still able to walk about and do stuff. I also liked the way that they locked up that glove "never to get it out again", and yet - it comes out again! Haha! And they let the newbie have a go of it!

Bahpants.

Tom Baker will always be the best Doctor in my book, no question.

Nanobots. Of course! The best thing to get out of a sticky situation if you're writing sci-fi...!

*ahem* Tom is my best because not only is he my first, he's also as mad as a hat. Tennant and Ecclestone tried to capture some of that Baker magic, but not enough. Oooh, no.

Pertwee was my first Doctor, and as such I hold a nostalgic soft spot for him, but Sir Thomas of Baker is undoubtably the 'daddy' and I just can't see anyone ever surpassing his fantastic portrayal.

As for Torchwood, I think it would be so much better if they modelled the organisation on something like CSI - a core team of memorable characters who do all the important story stuff, backed up with a larger team of incidental regulars. It'd bump the believability up by several magnitudes while providing an additional source of 'redshirts'.
