Doctor Who

The doctor would have just pulled a cork out of his pocket and flung it at the fairies, turning them into sausages.

Then he would have fried them, eaten them, staggered about drunk and screamed "WHO YA GONNA CALL?!" while a weird spin on the Ghostbusters music plays.

So to summarise, you spent Friday night throwing corks at little people then went home and ate some sausages while listening to your Ray Parker mix CD?

Think Moffatt is my favourite new-Who writer.

Isn't that the case for pretty much everyone though?

I mean, as well as the two episodes you mention (the best of season 1), he also wrote the amazing The Girl In The Fireplace (the best of season 2).

He actually manages to write proper science fiction that happens to be set in the Doctor Who universe.

Just had a watch of The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances.

Forgotten how fucking fantastic they are.

Think Moffatt is my favourite new-Who writer.

(I say that today.)

His two new Doctor Who stories are two of my favourite episodes in anything, ever. He's a brilliant writer, and I'm a little disappointed that he's written bugger all for Torchwood. :)

Like I say - today. I only need watch one of the other episodes to be drawn into another script and yet another writer. I think, on the whole, his three episodes have been amazing though. Can't fault any of them in any way. There's something very classy about the look of The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, too. They just 'look' so much better than a lot of what was in series two. Not sure why.

Is he down for any eps of series three?

They were mostly shot in the dark. It's a great way of covering up slightly shoddy effects.

Though I think these episodes must have had a bigger budget than most. That London night-time blitz scene is great.

Could get mighty pissed if there was a cliche drinking game with that episode.

Cliché smishé. That was good!

Last week's was like an adult Doctor Who episode. This weeks was Torchwood through and through, with neither a monster nor an alien in sight. Shame about the preview though, which makes next week's look a bit naff, if intriguing.

That was the best episode so far, although everything in it was taken from 'Dog Soldiers', 'Haute Tension' & 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre' - it was basically a horror B movie, done quite competently (although immensely cliched). I thought it was exciting, if stupid, and the twist was genuinely surprising.

The attempts to be "adult" are still hugely embarassing, though - Copper Woman & Ugly Geezer's attempted romance scene in the woods near the start was physically repulsive, as was their tryst at the end. The characters are too rubbish to care about.

Best one yet I reckon.

I'm enjoying this lots, and I like the fact it actually seems to have an ongoing storyline with characters addressing stuff that happened in previous episodes.

Watching this straight after Planet Earth does tend to highlight the fact that Owen looks like a chimp, though.

Back to Doctor Who, my special edition season 2 box-set's just arrived, and it's a lot nicer than I was expecting. The Cyberman head thing is really just a box for what I think is the standard box-set, but it's nice all the same. As for the standard thing, that's also a lot better than it appears on all the websites. There's a Cyberman on the back, on one of those moving picture thingies where it reaches out to grab you. The Doctor and Rose are actually on on plastic slip case coating, with the Tardis/Vortex behind them being another moving picture. It's basically a lot classier than it seemed.

On opening the box-set, I was also pleasantly surprised to see it includes The Christmas Invasion. ;)

As we're back onto Who, I'll post a spoiler about the christmas episode.

I attended the Children in Need event this Sunday at the Millenium Centre in Cardiff. You know the building above where Torchwood live.

It was a great concert, In fact I think my first ever encounter with a full Orchestra and IMO Murray Gold's music sounded fantastic when played by the National Orchestra of Wales. Anyway one section was a recently completed scene from the runaway bride and it were bloody brilliant.

Runaway Bride 1 scene Spoiler.

Basically its a full on car chase down the motorway except the one car is a TARDIS, yes a car chase with the TARDIS. it was really well executed and you see the TARDIS hitting cars and swooping in and out of Traffic. Then the doors open and the Doctor tries to persuade Donna(Catherine Tate, who was pretty good actually) to jump out of the Taxi she is locked in(its being driven by one of those evil Santa's) It was stunning to see all this put together, the TARDIS flying, and the doors open and the Doctor standing there persuading her to jump. One of the best effects sequences I've yet seen in Doctor Who. RTD also confirmed this happens about 10 mins in and we hadnt seen nothing yet

They confirmed it will be going Xmas day as well.

Well, fuck me. After a lacklustre first few episodes this series has certainly picked up over the last two weeks. I thought the twist was pretty good, and while Jack's entrance at the end made me burst out laughing (but in a good way), this was still a pretty tense episode. And the trailer for next week's one doesn't look bad either, hopefully it maintain the standard these last two ones have set (i.e. not brilliant, but pretty decent, which is good enough for me).
