Doctor Who

I'm running a week late.

The bit where the airbrushed eighties fantasy art Cyberwoman fights the Pterodactyl was clearly inspired by a million schoolboy's drawings on the cover of their jotters.

This is so awful, and yet if you see the "Making Of" show they're all deadly serious and self-important and believe they're making brilliant television.

I liked tonight's episode. A decent, creepy little story. Curious as to what Jack was doing in early 20th century India? Was this before he met the Doctor & Rose in the Blitz, or after he was resurrected?

There are still things that jar somewhat - mainly the fact that Torchwood were called in about the dead man in the cells. Why? Surely it would be the police medic, then paramedics, and then Scene of Crime Officers or something? At the very least someone would have found out enough about the death to tell Torchwood that he'd suffocated in mysterious surcumstances and had a mouth full of petals. Instead the panicky policeman seemingly just contacted TW as soon as he'd found the body.

And, without wanting to gt picky about FX, the matching of the live action humans and the CGI fairies was out-of-sync enough for it to be offputting.

Still, all-in-all, I enjoyed that one much more than the last four, so maybe things are looking up.

I really liked tonight's episode, it was much darker. Hooray.

Yeah, that was more like it. It was like something out of Doctor Who, but taken further into genuine adult territory, with some nice character development thrown in. I'm glad we're finally starting to learn more about Jack's past, if only a little bit.

I thought this was by far the best episode so far, even if including quiet little girls who seem to know something while nursery rhymes play in the background can sometimes be a bit of a lazy way to generate a scary atmosphere. The concept - fairies not being what they're made out to be - was a bit reminiscent of Terry Pratchett's book Lords and Ladies - not a bad thing. I kept wondering what Granny Weatherwax would do in that situation. :P

It reminded me more of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, but creepy fairies and strange little girls always makes for good atmosphere.

I must be the only one but I'm really enjoying Torchwood. I don't know what people expected but for me it's pretty much what I always thought it would be. The only gripe I have is that - well - Captain Jack in Torchwood just isn't Captain Jack. Of course this could be explained by some huge traumatic event but I hope they do explain this and it isn't just the result of a different writing team or poor scripting.

just watched this weeks there - in fact, watched cyberwoman followed by yesterdays.

cyberwoman was a bit naff, but not as bad as I thought. Really, imo, it was that costume that just spoiled it - my wife found the cyber-heels hilarious.

This weeks though was a pretty clever spin on the Cottingley fairies... really enjoyed it and it was genuinely too spooky to be a regular Who episode. One thing I didn't understand was...

*if I must...*

why did they kill Jacks old flame?

Sorry to sound like Meh but I hate what they're doing to Jacks character, he's just being destroyed. I mean maybe some of this backstory will get explained eventually but to me right now it looks like they're trying to retcon his conman days and make him an actual soldier, for a good period of time at least.

Was a bit of a step in the right direction this ep though I thought, less 'adult' for the sake of it and more a bit scarier and stuff.

but... Jack's soldier days could be AFTER the Dalek battle. Obviously he went back in time, but we don't know where he went back to? Perhaps he used the opening of the rift by the Gelf the first time to get back to Cardiff and then just waited.

I thought he went back to around 1940 and has been living through time without aging ever since.

Thats the way I read it as well. in fact it has to be really because IIRC in the empty child Jack is specifically in Blitz London to sell dodgy futuristic weaponry, or at least con people into buying it.

So he must have gone back to the past after The parting of the ways. But how far is anyones guess. They could be doing an 8th doctor with him and having him live through the 19/20th century.

I think though that Matt G just doesnt like the character if hes spent time as a soldier. Regardless of the story as to how he's there. Or it could be he's confused

This one's looking a bit more promising. Even if the uber-generic evil fairy voice (and even what it's saying) make me want to smash my Fable CD and stab myself in the eyes with it.

They're called "petechial haemorrhages" and it's not oxygen deficiency, it's only observed strangulation or suspension! FFS!

Maybe they'll have a couple of episodes tying back into Dr. Who or something. You know, maybe around the time of the Christmas special and the last episode.

"Hey, it's amateur hour!"

"Oh, you're so funny, Mr. "We can afford screenwriters."

"Hahahah! That's your best comeback? You really are fucked."

I don't think it started off well at all.

This weeks episode was slightly less rubbish, but still rubbish. Shame really; Jack is quite an interesting character.

I'll await the inevitable "Hello, I'm the doctor... I've come back to reclaim my hand that's in that jar" episode.

I think that's why I liked this episode - the ending really took me by surprise. I didn't think they'd, y'know, lose.

Yep, a very good episode, suprise ending and i thought the effects were superb

Much better than last weeks (not difficult i know)

Really good episode, and a brilliant ending.

A stark contrast to the shit endings of recent Doctor Who episodes.

The doctor would have just pulled a cork out of his pocket and flung it at the fairies, turning them into sausages.

Then he would have fried them, eaten them, staggered about drunk and screamed "WHO YA GONNA CALL?!" while a weird spin on the Ghostbusters music plays.
