The Torchwood crew managed to out do Stormtroopers this week in their inability to aim properly. If a Cyberwoman is walking towards you with bits of cyber armour on her, do you :-

A, Shoot her in her unarmoured face ?

B, Shoot at her armoured bits, so the bullets harmlessly ricochet off ?

It’s also becoming apparent that while Capt. Jack was great camping it up in a cameo in Dr Who, he can’t carry a series. Doesn’t help that most of the other actors can’t act their way out of a paper bag.

I’ll still probably watch next week though ;)

The lead woman is ace.

Anyway, Disposable Media 5 is out now, with a feature I wrote on the return of Doctor Who. Some of you lads and lasses might like to check it out.

They've been learning from anyone who ever took on Robocop. :(

The problem isn't that Captain Jack isn't a well rounded enough character, but that the character in Torchwood just isn't Captain Jack. He's Bruce Wayne crossed with Fox Mulder.

Where's the charm? The wit? The flamboyancy? The outrageousness? He's just a ruthless, angst-ridden, brooding antihero with lots of toys to play with, fighting sci-fi monsters whilst he waits for the Doctor to come back.

Why does she always have a permanent startled expression on her face ?

Very true. He's gone from being Captain Camp to Captain Scarlet "with issues"

What surprises me the most about TW is that having spoken to a few friends on the school run and all that the level of enjoyment they're getting from the show despite the fact that generally the sentences start with the words 'I know it's crap but...' That's what I can't figure out. Most of them are big time Dr Who fans and I know they'd never say that about Who so why do the allowances get made for Torchy? (Just imagine how much they might enjoy it if, for example, it wasn't crap?) I've given up putting my point of view (although tbh I try not to rant, just say that it's not the show I hoped to see) because generally they tend to agree with it all and still say they enjoyed it. What's a plot hole between... Well, between what exactly?

The only thing I can think is that the goodwill generated by the past couple of Dr Who series has been transferred over to TW... In which case it leaves me wondering if the negative kudos that Torchy is clocking up could have some sort of damaging effect on the parent show.... Again not sure but I hope it's not the case. Anyhow at the least I was heartened by the fact that bringing it up with some BA film/media students in a neutral way brought out some well reasoned comments about the positives (small) vs negatives (pretty major). The consensus seemed to be that Torchy doesn't know what it is: it's still produced like a child centric production (colour wise/storyline/direction and acting) yet it thinks it wants to be CSI or the Xfiles... The storylines minus the swearing and the immature references to sex wouldn't look out of place in an early evening slot yet the 'sexy', 'adult' additions just make it look more childish and noisily teenage. If you were trying to pin down the character of the show it'd be half emo, half barbie doll, half American, half Welsh, half for kids and 10% for adults so basically the numbers don't add up. Was a bizarre lesson when we did TW (we started off doing Seven Samurai and then got sidetracked :o ). The other consensus of the lesson was that during the 2am repeat slot (or whenever it was) it was probably the best of a bad bunch on at the time but that all told it would have been better to be asleep.

To be fair though, thats the way he is supposed to be at this point. He got dumped in the far future, probably doesn't know what happened, how come he came back to life, and has had to find his way back to today, god knows how. Plus he already has a 2 year memory gap.

I think he's supposed to be pretty pissed off at the Doctor and is just at Torchwood to wait till he turns up in Cardiff again.

Not sure Barrowman pulls this off too well though

Somebody should've flipped her over or something.

Thats enough about your cyber fantasy Alex

Anyway my biggest beef is the heels? How come other cybermen dont have heels? I mean we know women are converted why dont all cyberwomen get the heels? Or are the heels removed on completion of the cyber process?

I also liked the decent fx on the japanese bloke after he'd been had.

That was my favourite part. How cool would it have been if he'd been 'functional'? Some sort of Virus / Borg / Hellraiser amalgam. It was a really nasty looking piece of work.

Yeah, that would have been very effective.

Why is it that the CGI of the "makeover tools" was actually worse than the Dr Who equivalent? Even though it looked practically identical in nature? They could have just "lifted" the FX shot, it was so similar. Yet it was noticeably worse in quality. What's going on?!

I thought the tools looked shit in both shows.

I'm just having a hard time reconciling the way the Cyberwoman looks with this scene...

That was explained with one of Jack's lines where he mentioned how when the cyber army was losing soldeirs so fast. They started augmetning the human body by adding to it rather than removing the brain and puttting it in a suit.

No, I meant it looked like The Doctor had found it was full of spunk.
