Doctor Who

It seems unfair dissing RTD as he doesn't live up to one of the greatest TV writers ever, though. And as RTD was essentially trying to make a British Angel I think he's done quite well.

I like him for QAF and Second Coming, but my admiration for him for reviving Who has taken a bit of a dive since I read the 8th Doctor books recently and realised people had done all the hard work bringing the Doctor up to date years ago.

Well, that's the thing, isn't it? RTD looks like he's trying to write something that Joss Whedon has done before. So the criticism is natural.

Good on him for actually trying to pull it off et cetera...but if Whedon was doing it...well, you know what I mean.

Are you getting Torchwood and Who mixed up here? I cannot see Whedon has written anything approaching similarity to the latter.

Yeah, and without the BBC3 logo covering Jacks face.

I found that bloody annoying too, and I remember the hearing BBC banging on not having logos in the corner very recently too.

Anyway I enjoyed the first episode but thought the second was pretty poor, seems like it's trying way to hard to be "adult" rather than just enjoyable for adults.

Plus if they were going to have, swearing, humping, wanking and lezzing up, they really should have thrown some tits in too for good measure , very disappointing.

No tits = No sale.

WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!

 Damn right !

Really the whole of ep 2 was a no sale so they should have flashed some flesh to keep the interest going.

I find the whole lack of nudity on terrestrial TV very sad these days, When I was a kid instead of a sex scene you would get a topless babe getting into bed or out to imply sex had happened or was about to,

these days you just get fully dressed people humping away, a lot of grunting and no nudity, its the lost art of the sex scene :(

A pretty good writer for adults who made an excellent family show have a successful comeback and managed to spin off an adult show for a more mature audience that looks to be quite successful too.

Whereas Whedon wrote a tv show based on a shitty movie script he came up with in the early 90s and made a fortune of it because the lead was especially wank-worthy.

then he went on to write a shit spin off that had zero charisma and a sci-fi show that no-one watched.

Oh and he wrote a script for X-Men that was so "good" that they used one line from it.

Funny that Torchwood felt like a poor mans version of said TV show.

Something tells me that it'll be worth watching for the over-arching story of Captain Jack and his search for death but really... the episode plots have been pretty poor thus far.

The thing that causes me question about the premise is the way that they describe themselves as being 'Outside the government, beyond the UN'. Ok, the quote is probably incorrect, but you get the idea - but if this is the case then surely this makes them some sort of outlaw organisation? Any government is going to want to get it's mitts on the sexy alien tech, so why do the police / military walk away obediently as soon as Torchwood arives on the scene? Who has told them that they should defer jurisdiction to them? And if Torchwood truly is beyond accepted authority, then how come their tech was used to shoot down the (retreating) alien ship in the Christmas Invasion?

Has everything changed since the Dalek / Cyberman war?

And if they are so secretive and hardly anyone knows about them, how come every time they come to a scene where the authorities are already present, they just mention Torchwood and the Police or whoever just let them past? It is obvious the the general cops don't know about Torchwood, such as the cop who has now joined them. But by happy coincidence, every time they turn up, whatever cop is standing there does know about them.

I think that's just aquote just to make them 'sound cool' rather than being entirely accurate really :S They seem to portray it as kind of an MI5 type set-up as in Spooks: the goverment set it up and the police know it's a 'do what we say' deal, even though they don't know what they're really up to on any occasion, and because they're operating in secret they don't have to justify their actions to anyone outside the organisation.
