Cassidy is right, the second trailer is far better. But I still share the reservations most people have. This series could be oh so very good but in my heart something is telling me that its just going to be pap. Fingers crossed, but I haven't set my sights particularly high.

Heres the episode guide with some detail about what happens in each one, along with titles and writers.

EPISODE 1: 'Everything Changes' by Russell T Davies

When Torchwood arrives on the scene of a brutal murder, WPC Gwen Cooper's burning curiosity is challenged. Their attitude, their approach and their technology is at odds with everything she believes in. But investigating the investigators leads her into a dark, paranoid world she never imagined existed.

EPISODE 2: 'Day One' by Chris Chibnall

An alien addicted to sex is let loose on Cardiff's nightlife. Torchwood must track down the creature's new host and in doing so, confront a violent new form of love in the 21st century.

EPISODE 3: 'Ghost Machine' by Helen Raynor

Torchwood discovers a machine that allows them to view the ghosts that walk among us. Using it, prompts Owen to investigate an unsolved crime - one that could change all their futures.

EPISODE 4: 'The Trouble With Lisa' by Chris Chibnall

There's a dark secret in the basement of the Hub. Even Jack is unaware of it, but Ianto knows. And he'll go to any lengths, sacrifice anything and anyone, to protect what's down there.

EPISODE 5: 'Small Worlds' by Peter J. Hammond

Jasmine is a withdrawn but intelligent child whose new 'friends' exploit her suppressed anger, and while investigating this, Jack encounters elemental enemies from his past that are determined to harm those closest to him.

EPISODE 6: 'Countrycide' by Chris Chibnall

Upon entering an apparently deserted village in the Brecon Becons, the Torchwood team is separated. Finding his people are the prey in a savage game of cat and mouse Jack faces a team of ruthless hunters far more skilled in surviving outside the confines of the city than he.

EPISODE 7: 'Greeks Bearing Gifts' by Toby Whithouse

Tosh gains the ability to read the minds of those closest to her but as she becomes party to their darkest secrets, she realises not only is this is a powerful curse, but one impossible to break.

EPISODE 8: 'They Keep Killing' by Paul Tomalin & Dan McCulloch

Using alien technology to interrogate the victims of a serial killer, Gwen learns that the common link is dangerously close to home. And the resurrection device has a deadly secret of its own.

EPISODE 9: 'Invisible Eugene' by Jacquetta May

A hit-and-run victim, Eugene, was a bit of a nobody, and always convinced that aliens were coming to Earth, specifically to retrieve technology in his possession. Now Gwen finds herself drawn into his world and realises Eugene may still be helping her locate the 'aliens' - despite him being dead.

EPISODE 10: 'Combat' by Noel Clarke

The team discovers a ring who are kidnapping Weevils - wild alien creatures that have come through the Rift and are hiding on Earth - which leads Owen down a dark path to confront the future of his own existence.

EPISODE 11: 'Out of Time' by Cath Tregenna

A small passenger plane from the 1950's flies through the rift and lands in Cardiff 2006. Torchwood is drawn into strong personal relationships as they help the three temporal immigrants adapt to contemporary life.

EPISODE 12: 'Captain Jack Harkness' by Cath Tregenna

Transported back to the Blitz, Jack and Tosh find themselves facing a dark secret from Jack's past, one he hoped and believed had been buried for good.

EPISODE 13: 'Apocalypse' by Chris Chibnall

The Rift is violently fracturing further, and Jack realises that Torchwood is destined to be drawn into one vast battle that will leave nothing and no one at Torchwood unchanged...

A few in there sound pretty decent IMO.

It is a Cyberman! Or part of one at least. I knocked together this picture to prove my brother wrong, but he still insists it has nothing to do with the Cybermen. He said "anything silver looks like a Cyberman to you!" But he likes The Coral, so he's automatically wrong. ANYWAY!

Cyberwoman!

I suspect they're not so much cliches as tired sci-fi storylines done before and done better.

So you've manage to see all of Torchwood before any of us then. How did you manage that then?

How can you know they have been done better, I know I'll watch them and then decide, call me crazy.

Thing is I know the sex alien/demon thing has been done before, I even noted the fact when I first heard about the episode. Still should be better than the 2nd episode of Angel which did the same thing IIRC.

Which sci-fi show did the blitz episode before then? I can only think of The Empty Child off the top of my head.

Pretty much all of it. There's some bad dialogue there.

Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to the first episode. Hope RTD hasn't screwed it up.

do you like anything on TV?

Torchwood is aimed at adults who currently enjoy Dr Who and would watch a more adult oriented spin-off. If you don't like RTD's Dr Who, you almost certainly won't like Torchwood.

... and the killing by 'naughty' means thing has been done many times, best of all in the classic sci-fi movie 'Lifeforce'.... doesn't mean it'll be a bad episode does it?

Which bits are the cliches?

"This is when everything changes!"

Roll call of characters.

"We're way above, below, and sideways of the Home Office, UN, Starfleet, and the Illuminati."

Worried-looking cops in the rain!

Standing on the top of the corner of a building looking out on the city he's sworn to protect! That's right, Gotham Cardiff!

While I understand the logic (if you can call it that) in the BBC commissioning this, they way you've phrased this puts a whole new perspective on how absurd the idea is. Who is a kids show (yes, it is) and the characters are designed as such. The novels and the latest showings reflect the way society has come on and that's a very good thing to make it work as a kids show in this day and age. But to try and make an adult spin off is almost asking for trouble IMO. Jack worked as a foil to the Doctor, but carrying a show in his own right? I really worry it's going to be just terrible.

Yes, loads. Dr Who for one.

I do like "RTD's Dr Who". What I was referring to are the cliched bits in the trailer, which Alex has given a good summary of in the post above mine. Many of the lines in it sound horrifically cheesy. I just hope this isn't representative of the show as a whole.

Mindlessly defending a show before it has even aired is surely worse than making criticisms based on what we already know, yes?

I haven't seen one in a TV series since the end credits of COPS (which I can't find so there's the opening credits instead). Hopefully it'll just be part of the episode and they won't put it in the main titles or anything crazy.

Yeah, it looks like the standard thing of taking somebody new (or a guest star for that ep), walking them into the main office, and introducing them to all the team. It's a really lazy piece of writing to do it that way, in my opinion:

John: Noob, this is Alex Probesky - explosives expert. You want something blown up? He's the guy. Just watch out for his mood swings, ok?

Alex mimes an explosion.

John: And this is Susan Gibbs. She's a tenth Dan in taekwando. You don't wanna mess with her, let me tell you.

Everyone chortles. James Monroe walks into shot.

James: Hey John, how's that racquetball going?

James punches John playfully in the shoulder and walks off.

Noob: Who's that?

John: James Monroe. Wise-cracker. He beat me in a racquetball game the other day and won't let me forget it. But if you're looking for loyalty and dedication, he's your man...

Names reeled off? Check. Viewers hit over the head with personality descriptions, rather than them being brought into the story organically? Check.

If Torchwood does anything like this, then it'll be shoot-the-writers time.
