Doctor Who

I actually think the Rani could work quite well. Tennant's Doctor should play very well off an intelligent female adversary and as long as they reinvent the character a bit (as I'm sure they will) I don't really see the problem. The Master was always a bit MWAHAHAHAHA anyway; I can kind of see why RTD doesn't like the idea.

I agree with that. Tennant versus a sexy female baddy would be great.

I'd quite like to see the Master back at some point too, but not like he was in the 'olden days'. He'd need to be a bit more interesting than that. Not quite so moustache-twirling. And nothing like that abysmal prick from the TV Movie.

the TV Movie - a Who story that grows on me everytime I see it, actually.

Saw it last week for the first time since the original broadcast (and the first time since I've really got into Dr Who).

It's such a mixed bag. The first half an hour or so is fantastic - atmospheric, true to the series, great performances AND you get to see the seventh Doctor shot, which fulfils a few childhood fantasies for me at least.

Then it unravels really rapidly. By the end it's a mess of pyrotechnics with a guy in a big cape running around growling and the Doctor tied up and people flaking out all over the place and I really didn't know who was doing what or why and to be honest I didn't really care.

I really wanted to like it, too.

If RTD wants to go the route of a sexy female baddie, why the Rani?

Why can't The Master be female?

Because she's shit, and doesn't even mean anything to the mainstream punter.

True enough. Though I don't think the Autons meant much to the mainstream. Indeed, considering how long the show has been off air, and the fact loads of kids are watching it, I shouldn't think the Daleks or Cybermen meant much. But they've been restored - reinvented.

They could really spice the Rani up. Could.

To be honest, I think the Rani "announcement" may have more to do with generating some vague public interest in next month's release of Mark of the Rani on DVD (shoehorned into the schedule only after a Peter Davison release was delayed) than any actual casting intentions for series 3.

Let's hope.

Exactly. I'm not a fan of the Rani at all, but that's mainly because the stories she was in were written by perhaps the two worst writers in the show's history, and Kate O'Mara was a ham. Doesn't mean there's no potential in the idea of an evil Time Lady.

'The Rani' is a stupid name, though.

Rani Tyler would work better.

The drop off in viewing figures just confirms, to me, that Dr Who is on at the wrong time. It would be perfect winter evening viewing and the figures would be much higher. I am puzzled by the March-June run.

To be fair, the average viewing figures over the course of the season was only around 200,000 down. Considering the World Cup was on for a large portion, I think it coped rather well.

Tooth and Claw and Rise of the Cybermen did very very well.

Oh, I know it did great, and that in itself is great!

I just think it would be ace if Who was shown on cold, dark winter nights

With the final two episodes of series two getting over 8 million viewers each (up from about 6.9m for the final two last year), they're not likely to move it anytime soon. No BBC drama in the winter gets 8 million, let alone one at 7pm in the summer, which makes Who seem all the more impressive, really!

Personally I'd like to see it move to winter too, but then that would see it up against much stiffer opposition, so it wouldn't necessarily mean a rise in ratings.

Indeed. X-Factor and such.
