It's strange because in Doomsday it seemed like it was the first time I'd heard that music. But re-watching Rose it was there all along, and it even cropped up briefly in The End of the World. It will no doubt turn out to have been used in every episode in the last two years whenever there was an emotional Rose-Doctor moment. I just never noticed it until the end.

I've just ordered "The Beginning" from Play, although I think I'll wait until I've rewatched last year's series before diving in. I don't want two parallel time travelling stories on the go.

I watched the commentaries to Rose and End of the World last night and they referred to that music as "President Flavia's music" - an in-joke about the last timelord president apparently (I'm not up to speed on this stuff). I think the version at the end of Doomsday was the same theme but extended and remixed.

She was left as acting-President at the end of 'The Five Doctors' when the Doctor, having just been appointed to the position, buggered off because he didn't want the job.

Turlough: "Won't the Time Lords be very angry?"

Doctor: "Furious!"

Tegan: "You mean you're deliberately choosing to go on the run from your own people, in a racketty old TARDIS?"

Doctor: "Why not? After all, that's how it all started!"

:)

Ahem. But it's lovely.

I watched "Pyramids of Mars" again today. Cracking stuff. I love the "Oh Mummy" bit in the special features. "I bring you Sutekh's gift of milk to all humanity!"

From the Pyramids of Moos no less. :P

"This is my pet rabit, Neal. Neal before Sutekh!"

8.22 million was the final figure for 'Doomsday', ending the season on something of a high note, and almost 1.5 million more than saw Eccleston's last episode. It can't really be overstated just how amazing 8.22 million is on a sunny July Saturday evening - it's stunningly good, and it's no wonder series four has been given the green light.

1 WORLD CUP 2006: ITA V FRA (SUN 1900) - 13.92 - BBC1

2 WORLD CUP 2006: POST-MATCH (SUN 2141) - 13.22 - BBC1

4 WORLD CUP 2006: POR V FRA (WED 2000) - 10.26 - BBC1

5 WORLD CUP 2006: POST-MATCH (WED 2153) - 9.56 - BBC1

6 WORLD CUP 06 (TUE 1959) - 8.89 - ITV1

On the subject of classic Who-watching, I rewatched City of Death last night. There are sadly all too few moments in the history of TV which truly make your heart sing with joy when you watch them again and again, but City of Death by my reckoning has at least six; Duggan pointing at the Jagaroth craft and saying "That's a spaceship!" being one of the finest.

It beat EastEnders again, and nearly all of Corrie. Amazing. That's an average of just under 8 million for the whole series - just like the first series, despite it being on in the hot weather and the World Cup fucking it up.

Incidently, the World Cup Final got just under 14 million on the Beeb. How many viewers did ITV nab?

2.85 million. :)

The last DW Confidential smashed through the 1 million barrier on BBC3 for the first time, by the way - which makes it one of BBC3's top-rated shows since the channel started. Even BBC3's most-watched drama, Casanova, didn't break 1 million.

BBC3 Top 10 (000's)

1 DOCTOR WHO CONFIDENTIAL (Sat 1947) 1012

2 DOCTOR WHO (Sun 2201) 703

3 DOCTOR WHO (Fri 2117) 574

4 EASTENDERS (Thu 2201) 536

5 EASTENDERS (Tue 2203) 495

6 EASTENDERS (Mon 2201) 433

7 60 SECONDS (Tue 2201) 433

8 EASTENDERS (Fri 2230) 400

9 DOCTOR WHO (Wed 1952) 385

10 60 SECONDS (Sat 2016) 384

Has there ever been an episode where the Doctor actually meets himself via the use of some time travel gubbins?

In the old series - numerous time. The Five Doctors is probably the most noteworthy.

What happened?

Episode made to celebrate the series' 20th birthday. Five Doctors (including Tom Baker, although he only appears using unused footage from an old story) are "snatched out of time" back to the Doctor's home planet, Gallifrey, to take part in "sinister game."

Good story, on the whole. Tends to divide fans, mind.

I don't know. There seems to be a fair bit of overlap and we've been discussing Torchwood in here for ages.

I suppose if the two series aren't running concurrently it would keep this thread alive, but if people go off on a "Hey what was that one where Tom Baker did a shit on a swan?" tip in the middle of the Torchwood discussions it could get messy.

A Tennant / Eccleston crossover would be nifty.

Tennant/Eccleston/McGann, surely.

Colin Baker knows nothing of The Crunch.

Little known fact - just before the Cyberman attacks Adric at the end of "Earthshock", it actually yells "CRUNCH TIME!", but this was dubbed out because the production team were Alabaster Retards.
