Doctor Who

That's interesting. What was the first Who everyone else saw?

I grew up in Australia, where Doctor Who was a regular weekday fixture at 6.30pm for years and years (often following straight after re-runs of The Goodies, which endured in Oz much longer than here in the UK). As an episode a day gets through everything at a fair old clip, I can recall at least two runs through from the Jon Pertwee era (they only showed the colour episodes) so I have pretty decent recall of everything from Spearhead from Space onwards.

Although I'd had plenty hide-behind-the-sofa moments earlier (esp with the Daleks) the one that really got me hooked, however, was The Green Death: those giant maggots totally freaked me out. And I loved it. Another favourite from that era was Death to the Daleks. I adored the bit where the Doctor and his ghoulish little friend have to pass through several tests to get to the heart of the City, pursued by Daleks (felt much the same about the puzzles at the end of Pyramids of Mars - great stuff).

The only episode from that era that I've never seen is the Brain of Morbius. The ABC decided that it was simply too violent for our delicate Australian sensibilities, so it never featured in the re-runs.

Yeah, I think it's those giant maggots that are my earliest memory. No idea what the story was about but they scared me silly.

Toxic luminous green power-plant waste pumped into disused Welsh coal mine by evil industrialist. Maggoty hilarity ensues.

I really don't understand the general dislike of Idiot's Lantern. Surely if you like classic Who then this one was one of the more enjoyable episodes. I thought it was the most 'traditional' of the new series. And I'm not some nostalgic geek. I thought Love & Monsters was pretty damn good too.

I'm firmly in the "another fantastic series" camp. It had its weaker moments of course but overall it was great fun. Plus watching it with the kids made every Saturday evening a real "family event" that we all looked forward to every week. Telly doesn't get much better than that as far as I'm concerned.

I don't really understand all the nit picking, but then they don't call us nerds for nothing I suppose.

One other thing, I'm looking forward to starting last year's series again next Saturday to a truly ludicrous degree. Perhaps it's the thought of the kids seeing it for the first time, or just me seeing them all again (most of last year's I only saw once, unlike this year's which all got watched at least twice).

I can't wait!

That's the one I particularly remember and if my addled memory isn't deceiving me it's the story where Pertwee regens into Baker. I hope I'm right but as I haven't seen it in around 30 years I reckon I can be forgiven. My brain insists on remembering some giant spiders too although I don't remember if it's the same story or actually the one that kills off ol' Jon.

The maggots are from The Green Death, whilst those spiders you mention feature in Planet of the Spiders, which concludes with the Doctor's regeneration.

Planet of the Spiders is the last Pertwee Story. The Green Death is the maggots one, and is from the season before that.

Just watched it.

Both in a row.

What a fucking superb finale. Me...a Doctor Who hater before the new first series started.

Now a total devotee of the man.

Eccelston was great. Tennant has it nailed.

The finale. That whole storyline. Fucking awesome. Loved every minute of it.

Plot holes? Screw em

Bad Acting? Stuff it

Enjoyed it? FUCKING LOVED IT!!!

Phelan feels the Who love.

Just been thinking about how much I loved some of the action sequences in it. The bit where the humans and Cybermen team up to attack the Daleks was really exciting.

What I really loved about that was the implication that since the last scene with the Cybermen in it there'd been an off camera negotiation where the Doctor tricked them into letting him "help" them against the Daleks.

Apparently Catherine Tate is standing right behind him has he posts.

Tell him to grab a staple gun and do the right thing.

My brother really hated that bit. He said "That would never happen!". Me, I loved it! Cybermen bursting in through exploding walls with big fuck off beam rifles! :);)

their suits were covered in Void Stuff??

HOWEVER.... their departure was very different I thought. They didn't get sucked into the void like the Daleks did. I'm beginning to think that they just used the open void to return back from whence they came as a retreat. They were going up stairs to open the void anyway before the Torchwood woman stopped them...

So - seeing the void was open and knowing that they couldn't defeat the Daleks, they returned to somewhere safe...

dunno where tho, since it obviously wasn't the parallel universe...

If the Preachers got the devices to jump between dimensions from raiding Universe B's Torchwood, it's not too hard to believe that the Cybermen would have them as well, as they infiltrated that Torchwood and kicked off the chain of events in the first place. They probably upgraded themselves with it along with the wrist beam cannons.

Download the podcast for the episode. All this is explained.
