Doctor Who

Surprised this is getting such a positive reaction.

One of the worst I've seen.

Exactly how I felt about the Satan two-parter, that. I've never seen a series split its fans down the middle episode by episode like this one has. It's weird how some episodes seem to click with people, so they can ignore the exact things they've hated in previous ones. I was sitting there really enjoying this week's, but I could see exactly the things that practically had me throwing things at the TV earlier in the series. But I didn't care. Weird.

Some of the Cybermen haven't been through the void, they must have been made on earth so not all of them should have been sucked through.

Hasty retcon says: they brought the metal Cyber-bodies with them, and just put local brains in!

They were completed here. By which I mean their brains were put inside the suit. But if the suit had come through the void rather than being built here, it would still have been sucked back through. And I assume the suits were brought through because they would have had fuck all time to build them in this world.

What about the Tardis then? That's been between dimensions...

If I was writing comedy for a family programme, I'd take that as a compliment.

Really?

Thank Christ they never let you write The Simpsons.

RTD really ballsed this one up. Terrible plot. Holes everywhere. Slushy preposterous scenes. Characters behaving as they shouldn't. Characters appearing for no reason. No sense of scale. No sense of dramatic drive. And terrible dialogue.

An episode saved by Billie Piper, who isn't in the next series. Ulp.

And more worryingly, the creeping sense that Tennant is incapable of rising above bad material.

Worrying.

So yeah, Boyatsea's summary.

Rose's exit was perfect. The rightful and pretty much only way you could part her from the Doctor. To die would have been wrong rather than upsetting, because for me she has been a huge feature in why Who has been such a success since its return. The looks on both of their faces as she lost her grip was just excellent. Excellent, excellent acting.

Also fitting that it was her 'Dad' which saved her, harking back to Father's Day.

I really enjoyed the banter between the Daleks and Cybermen, and the utter contempt shown by the former for the latter. The Cyberleader actually seemed to lose confidence throughout the conversation, whereas the Daleks just didn't give a shit. Indeed, the script for the Daleks in this episode is the best since the series returned.

I was worried about the Norway bit, thinking it could be another piss-poor Love & Monsters paving slab moment, but it was expertly written. Rose almost not being able to tell the Doctor that she loved him, the "quite right too", and the fade out before he could return the compliment - all beautifully done. That scene was a killer. It's also pretty good that in a way, despite the Doctor stealing Rose and running off around the Universe together, he's actually left the Tylers (and Mickey) in a far better state. Stronger.

Nice.

The only downside is I don't think the CGI was up to standard. I've said this before, but it's almost like they spent their entire budget on The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit (which were like nothing I'd ever seen on TV) and had to make to with scraps for the rest of the series. Again, there were some dodgy effects - the Daleks flying out of the Genesis Ark being the one that has stuck in my mind.

I did prefer last week's episode (just), purely because the revelation of the Daleks was done so well, but this week's was excellent too. Can't fault the plot, direction or acting.

That was incredible - I was really worried that Rose would actually be sent to Hell...

Plus I dunno what people have against The Satan Pit/Impossible Planet two parter. One of my favourites - sure, it nodded to a lot of movies, but it was a strong and confident nod.

Eh? I might have sent my CV to almost everyone on earth, but I don't think I quite managed to apply for the job of a writer on The Simpsons, to be honest. To be fair, and this is just a personal opinion, but whenever they get up to the more recent series on Channel 4, The Simpsons becomes pretty dire. Early years FTW - it was excellent back then.

Anyway. back on track. You're saying you'd prefer Doctor Who to be written in the same way as The Simpsons? Thank Christ they'd never let you write Who. You'd pitch it all wrong, fella, and it would be for the chop again.

You liked "The cybermen are superior in one sense. YOU ARE BETTER AT DYING! LOLZ! LOLZ!"

Dear dear.

Nevermind that. You enjoyed Peter Kay.

Yeah, that's what I said.

You can't argue your way out of a paper bag, Keith. You've never been able to. So just leave it.

I don't need to.

Yes, i enjoyed comedy in a comedy episode from a comedy monster designed by a child.

Not shit comedy from the mouth of a Dalek.

Fucking clown. DON'T MAKE ME PUT YOU BACK ON IGNORE.

I honestly thought the only thing they could have said in that situation would be "The Cybermen are superior - only in number" and then he should have made the pest control remark.

My heart sank when I heard what was said.

I was relieved - for a second there I honestly thought it was going to say 'the Cybermen are superior - only in height'.

Got to say, I thought the Satan Pit double header was the high point of the series. Surprised it's not getting more love. That felt like Dr Who.

It did. It was a lot darker in pitch and tone than all the other stories in Series 1 and 2. I really enjoyed it - I think at the time most of the people in this thread did too.

They'd probably get David Suchet.

As far as I'm concerned, Suchet stuck his oar in as the Belgian Detective and I can't see him as anything else.

Much the same as the late Jeremy Brett with Holmes.

However...I'd be happy to give him a shot. Suchet that is. Not Brett...for obvious reasons...
