Just flicking through, and BBC3 have Fear Her' and Part one of Doomsday showing.

now.. in Fear Her' the Doctor lets slip " I was a father once you know " which stuns Rose a little.

in part one of Doomsday, Jackie Tyler is in the Tardis and she just said to Rose

" You even look like him " ( The Doctor )

SPOOKY!!

but impossible?

The Doctor had a grandaughter, Susan, in the first series, which explains how he can be a father.

As for Jackie's comment, surely that's more about how she doesn't recognise her daughter any more now that she's becoming more like him, rather than inferring that the Doctor knocked her up.

Well, I've finally caught up, just in time for the BBC's trailers to ruin the big spoiler for me. Still, it made the Void ship even more scary when I came to watch the episode.

Dr Who has me eating jelly babies out of the palm of its hand again. The Hell episodes, Army of Ghosts and Girl in the Fireplace have been tip-top. Army of Ghosts was the most authentically Dr Who episode since it all restarted.

Love & Monsters and Fear Her were more for the kids than for me, but I reckon they'd have worked on me when I was a young 'un. Dr Who needs the mix of stories, and I don't think they particularly let the side down.

I'm so glad. I was really disappointed when I feared it was turning rubbish. Now to catch up with this thread. Hope you all enjoyed them as much as me.

The thing that always sticks in my mind when all the pedants on here start rantings about "Oh this was shite and that was crap and this should have been done this way" always makes me think "Well I would hate to see what you would come up with.

Guaranteed it would be a self reverential, pretentious piece of shite that would refer to 23 year old episodes that the general public dont remember in massive detail (as opposed to throwaway lines for the hardcore) and would be shot like a film making students attempt at "homage" (aka throwing in every cliched camera angle and lighting technique from the last 20 years). Now THAT would be a real ratings flop.

Face it, the shows still doing well, its fun and appeals to both hardocre and casual viewers.

And for the record, the only episode this season that was shite was love and monsters.

Cybermen, satans pit and fear her were great. However needed more time to stew. They should make some episodes into 3 or 4 parters again. Iidiots lantern deserved more time to cook and ferment in its own juices. A nice 3 parter would have been more digestible.

Just had another watch of Army of Ghosts. I think that tops Girl in the Fireplace - I think it's just about my favourite episode since the series came back. It's so well paced and the music is absolutely bloody superb throughout. The kid's gasp when he sees the Cyberman at the top of the stairs and the beautiful visual feast that is the revelation of the Daleks make all my hairs stand on end.

Superb stuff. Just please don't let me down tomorrow, Russell.

Indeed. The thing I like is having to fill in the blanks myself which saves the producers having to spend time alienating viewers with things that have no effect on the plot. Like the "I was a father myself once" line. The hardcore Outpost Gallifrey types would want him to explain that in detail, but for me I understand that a) he had a grandaughter (and thusly at least one child) and b) he destroyed Gallifrey and the Time Lords. So yeah, he was a dad, but he's wiped out his entire family. His family can't come back, so why dwell on them any longer than necessary? Fan service? The line was the fan service!

he also mentioned it back when he was chris ecclestone. "I was a grandfather once too, and a father, a long time ago" or words to that effect. In the empty child two parter, he said it to victor meldrew....

In the books and during the Doctors 100 yr exile on Earth, he also adopted a daughter called Miranda.

She just happened to be a Gallifreyan descendant and Empress of the universe from the end of the universe, but she was his daughter.

Father Time be the book. and it be excellent.

Just saw a news report on BBC news about Rose leaving. I got a bit sad to be honest. Oh and seeing as I cant watch the episode till tomorrow, can you all wait till sunday to post in this thread :(

Glad to read Graham enjoyed S2 :(

It's worth pointing out that while most of the old stories came in four parts, those parts were only about twenty minutes long. As such a new series two parter is actually longer than an old series four parter. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it. :(

Of course that doesn't really affect The Idiot's Lantern, but then I rather enjoyed that one anyway.

The problem with that line, for me, is that I've never seen old Who, so when he said that it was a REVELATION as far as I could discern.

I mean... if you didn't know he had a grandaughter and he just came out with that, you'd be left thinking "When are they gonna explain THAT one?!"

Another part of the mystery of the Doctor. If they explained every point in extreme detail it would be a bit shite

I was watching this classic Dr Who a while ago, where these dinosaurs were being transmitted here by a few people who wanted to build a new Earth and it was handled in a much better way then episodes are now. It was something like 6 episodes for this massive storyline and it was great, there was one point were the Dr was going to take down this massive dinosaur and you couldn't help but to think how?

He also wasn't escalated above society, he actually needed help from the army and such - whilst this Dr is either lucky or way too powerful. Even though the effects were cheap, people's reactions seemed much more realistic and also dramatic. I just think the new Dr Who could be so much better if they didn't sensationalise everything.
