Doctor Who

Something I noticed about the teasers. Or specifically the teaser for the recent episode. There was a shot in the teaser which many people pointed out where they walked into the artifact warehouse section of Torchwood and there was a black Dalek visible. The same shot was in the show, but there was no black Dalek, just some unknown object covered with black plastic or tarpaulin. Are they being a bit tricksy with their teasers? I'm not sure it was a case of mistaking the unknown random black object for a black Dalek.

They didn't change the shot. It was still there, when she said 'Welcome to Torchwood'.

It was just never a Black Dalek in the first place.

Exactly.

Anyway, can't believe we've come this far without mentioning how brilliant Murray's score was this week. He's had some pretty dodgy episodes in the second series, but this was spot on. Tension-building-epic.

Anyone else notice the music playing during the Cybermen invasion sounds almost note for note like the escape theme from Metroid?

I've just watched some of those Tomb of the Cybermen vids on YouTube. Patrick Troughton is a bit before my time (I started with Tom Baker) but I quite liked it. The pace is more measured and I love the bleepy-bloopy music mixed with more traditional orchestral stuff. In some ways, it seems a whole lot less cheesy than the current Doctor Who, despite cheaper FX.

That's maybe the thing that's missing in today's films and television series. All shots are fast and furious, but the best thrillers are slowly working into a climax.

True. Getting back to the music, that's another aspect of the new Doctor Who I haven't really taken to. The background music seems as though it's tripping over itself (if that makes any sense) and doesn't seem to fit too well with whatever's happening at any given moment. It seems almost intrusive at times. That's about the only way I can explain my dislike of it really. Possibly it's my imagination, I don't know. It just feels "wrong" sometimes.

I just re-watched Army of Ghosts there - second time round, it's even better. The last 15 minutes are some of the most exciting 15 minutes I've seen on TV for a long time - and the "great reveal" is still magic. Entertaining and humours build up - leading up to a complete about turn on tone and pace. I just want next weeks to be longer than 45 minutes!

My wife is potentially sadder then me... we're watching Badwolf just now and Annedroid asks a question (not word for word) "the cobalt pyramid is built on the remains of which famous earth based institute..."

the answer...

"torchwood"

and that was from series 1.

sweet.

Ummm... a quick question. As someone who really enjoys the whole Doctor Who thing, but doesn't really know that much prior to the "new" series - even though I watched it when I was wee - in the trailer for next weeks episode, the Daleks look like they're moving something around. They called it a Genesis Ark or something? Has it been in the show before, and is it mahoosively important?

It's just looking back though the last few pages, it's not been mentioned, and I was just intrigued as to what it actually is...

ta!

It's never been in the show before, but the name is almost certainly a reference to Genesis of the Daleks, one of the most popular of the old serials. This is probably just a nod to the fans, but there could be something more to it.

It could be something very major relating to the old series, or it could just be a big old tease.

Do you have an actual link? Doing a search on what you suggested brings up a ton of links and Im not even sure what Im looking for

I won't bother with spoiler tags in future then.

No need to be like that. Your post wasn't there when I started mine, and I don't personally see how pure speculation could be seen as a spoiler.

Still, in the interests of world peace and all that, spoiler tags are go.

EDIT: Make that "whited out quotes are go". Spoiler tags still don't seem to work for me.
