Doctor Who

I still don't see how it was badly written.

Some of the lines were terrible. Well at least I thought so.

The whole "come on guys, let's tear this thing apart, even if it's the last thing we do..." combined with the whole goodbye-through-the-raised-paving-slabs thing was pretty painful for me, anyway.

I guess I took it as part of the silliness of the whole thing.

Good silliness: The scene with Rose and the Doc chasing the monster. Jackie being a total slut. The whole 'we formed a band' sequence (that bit had me in stiches).

Bad silliness: Any scene with Peter Kay in. The paving slab.

My bone of contention with you (and some others), if you like, is that you seem to be under the misguided impression that the reason a lot of us didn't like the episode is because it was 'different'.

I know, but I stopped saying that (p)ages ago. In fact, I'd just apologised for implying that when you started laying into me.

I know we don't normally have to put "in my opinion" after everything, but when you're basically saying "I'm worried the series will be cancelled because it WAS shit", then you really do have to take a step back. All I was saying was "relax". One episode you didn't like, but which others did, is not going to spell doom for the series. No matter how determined you are that it was shit.

And now let us shake hands over the series we both adore, hmmmm?

Thinking out loud perhaps, but I worry. I worry because, if I was the Beeb watching that, I'd be worried. But yes - ignore me if you will.

Naturally, Davros.

I'll say again.

If Doctor Who becomes "More Girl In The Fireplace" again, then Doctor Who will die.

Some of us suffered the death the first time. We embrace the diversity, the fun, and the risks.

It was a great episode - a necessary one.

This is the sort of thing I was talking about with my earlier post.

I WANT diversity, fun, and risks. I AGREE that this was a great idea for an episode.

I THINK it was rubbish, not because it was a departure, or because it was risky, or because it focused on comedy, or because the Doctor had a cameo, but because it had terrible writing, dodgy am.dram-level acting (with some exceptions) and a rubbish second half!

That is something that we can only disagree on though - if I think it's bad acting and you think it's good, well then bad luck for me, really.

But PLEASE stop trying to bring the discussion back round to whether or not they should make episodes like this. I think everyone probably agrees that they should - with the possible exception of some of the beardy types on OG.

EDIT: I can see Boyatsea and Davros have resolved this particular issue now.

EDIT 2:

I think the reason myself and Boyatsea felt compelled to keep having it out was that we felt the discussion was going like this:

A: I didn't really like it.

B: But it was supposed to be a funny, different kind of Doctor Who episode!

A: Oh, I get that - I just thought it was badly done.

B: But it was supposed to be a funny, different kind of Doctor Who episode!

A: Yes I know, and that's good, what I'm saying is that the execution was bad.

B: But it was supposed to be a funny, different kind of Doctor Who episode!

A: THAT ACTING WAS SHIT AND SO WAS THE WRITING!

B: But it was supposed to be a funny, different kind of Doctor Who episode!

and so on :)

I notice no-one picked up on my "What do you normally think of Peter Kay?" question.

I've gone from being a massive fan to being a bit fed up of his apparent cynicism and money-grabbing (lazy tour performance, releasing the same set on two DVD's, getting rid of his co-writers and turning in a below-par Max & Paddy).

But I thought he was ace in Love & Monsters.

It was meant to be like that.

I loved That Peter Kay Thing and Phoenix Nights. His output since then has been largely lazy rubbish, as typified by his performance on Jonathan Ross the other night- he blatantly didn't give a toss, he was pissed off his head. He spent the whole interview shouting and slurring through some self-aggrandising gibberish- I haven't seen anyone on TV quite so obviously drunk since Vic 'n Bob on Comic Relief a few years ago.

Having said that, I thought he was quite good in L&M- he was one of the strongest elements in the show.

By the way, to the people who hated it, what do you think of Peter Kay generally?

Liked the show a lot, hate Peter Kay so I'll reply anyway. As a piece of stunt casting, it could have gone horribly wrong. But it worked, and I'll give him credit for that. I swear he was trying to crowbar in another catchphrase he can sell on an umbrella with "Exzeema" though.

He doesn't drink.

Really? Now you mention it, I remember him saying he was teetotal in another interview. How odd- he really did come across like he was drunk.

Oh well, that's that sketch knackered. It was still a terrible appearance, though.

I can take or leave Peter Kay. I haven't really had enough exposure to his stuff for it to matter that much either way that he was cast.

I've never seen him in anything. Fortunately, fat Northerners are intrinsically funny so everything was fine.

I have a lot of love for Jumble.

I used to think he was bloody hilarious. Indeed, his observations are spot on usually, in a very Victoria Wood kind of way.

Sadly, he's now become obsessed with how Northern he is, and all of his punchlines now revolve around catchphrases, which wasn't the case at all with his early sets.

We're big fans of his in Davros Towers, and I imagine that made us far more sympathetic viewers.

Agreed. I love him but I think the Kay backlash has definitely extended to even his appearance in Doctor Who.

Thinking about it, Peter Kay just shows how great Johnny Vegas would be in a Doctor Who role.

I'd like to see how that would work too. Although it probably couldn't be heard above the sound of millions of Doctor Who fans wailing and gnashing teeth.

By the way: I just saw the last episode (the first I properly saw since Tooth & Claw) and I liked it. :) Felt like they filmed a Doctor Who-fanfiction, it all fitted perfectly. Maybe not as exciting as other Doctor Who episodes, but maybe far more interesting. Every series should try this kind of experimenting once in a while. ;)
