Doctor Who

So did anyone with kids get asked to explain how they might have a love life? :D That whole ending was kinda funny but at the same time just felt a bit... wrong. Though his little speech about life not following the norms of society was quite good I suppose.

Well, here's why that ending scene worked so well, from the BBC Website page where kids review the show:

"That's quite scary!" says Harry, pointing at what remains of Ursula. Amy nods in agreement. Samuel can't understand why Adam, Mum and Dad find the idea of "A love life with a concrete slab!" so very funny...

Double layers ftw!

We laughed a couple of times, but in general I found it to be almost unwatchable. Elton and Ursual were terrible actors, I can't believe the praise he's getting here!

The Scooby Doo corridor scene was awful, I don't care how silly it was meant to be or whether it was him telling it as a flashback - it was ridiculous, but unfortunately it set the level for the rest of the episode.

Tennant was brilliant though, as usual, and this time I thought Jackie was a lot better too, in fact I'd say her scenes were some of the best bits.

Oh, you're no fun anymore.

Eh? They're brilliant actors, the pair of them! I've never seen them in anything where they're not completely fantastic to watch (Marc Warren in 'State of Play' and Shirley Henderson in that recent 'Taming of the Shrew', for example). A classy pair. I hope we get to see Elton again next year, actually. That'd be sweet.

The ratings are well up over the last couple of episodes - 6.2 million and a 38% share, easily the most-watched show on Saturday, and right up there with some of the weeks episodes of EastEnders and Coronation Street. In fact, only the 'big' football matches have done considerably better. Hooray!

She was rubbish in 'Taming of the Shrew', like a cartoon. Absolutely no depth. All she did in it was growl, scowl and talk in that annoying squeeky voice while looking at her feet.

(Love and Monsters)

Absolute, unmitigated shite from start to finish. I genuinely do not understand what anyone would have liked about this episode. Worst Who episode ever, and possibly the least enjoyable 45 minutes I've spent watching ANY programme in recent memory.

I'm a big fan of both new series overall, but OH MY GOD WILL SOMEONE PLEASE KILL RUSSELL T DAVIES?! He's done his bit getting Who back to our screens, now let someone with some actual talent *cough*Stephen Moffat*cough* run the show.

A really great episode, brave and funny and up there with my absolute favourites from this series.

Any episode that's specifically designed to piss off the fanbase and features a fat man in a thong as the main bad guy gets my vote any day. When you add in a paving slab that gives blowjobs and consider the fact that the episode featured virtually no Rose whatsoever (yippee!) then there's really nothing to dislike.

Anyway, joking apart, it was interesting to see the Doctor from an outsider's point of view. He seemed very strange and distant in this - David Tennant's Doctor really is the most "alien" of all the Doctors since, probably, Tom Baker. I like.

I agree, and the image of the little boy seeing the Doctor just standing in his living room, and him subsequently repressing the Tardis landing sound, was very strong.

What episodes did he do?

He wrote Girl in the Fireplace. By far the strongest episode of the two series; a strong story, genuine emotion and pathos, scary baddies and - most importantly of all - superb dialogue (unlike the forced, over-laboured crap RTD excretes).

Doctor: "Wish me luck!"

Reinette: "No."

*shivers*

Oh, and while we're on the subject of why it was better than any of RTD's episodes, it didn't have any Torchwood or needless pop-culture references shoehorned in, the Doctor didn't spend five minutes telling everyone how much he loves Rose mankind and it WASN'T SET IN FUCKING LONDON.

[edit: Moffat did The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances for the previous series, too. Also excellent.]

I hated this episode, I hated Peter Kaye and I hated the blowjob reference.

And next week we're back of fucking Earth again. Come on! It's like Eastenders.

The whole 'getting close to someone to find out about something else, actually starting to like them then having the whole thing ruined by them finding out your ulterior motive' has been used in every soap opera known to man as well as many other lazy TV programmes time and time again.

Which show was that, then?

I'm guessing the Buffy episode 'Storyteller.' Andrew uses a video camera to record Buffy's adventures. And it was about a million times better than the pile of crap I watched last night. Andrew should be the new companion.

It's also been done in Star Trek TNG (from the perspective of some junior officers) and Babylon 5 (from the perspective of a couple of maintenance guys). There's probably been more too. Not that I'm criticising it.

Why does pop culture = bad? The show should refer to pop culture, it keeps it relevant. Better that than the Doctor swanning around like a great nancy, too aloof to even mention such things. Doctor Who is simply a TV programme, and isn't above referring to stuff like Elton John, ELO or Big Brother.

They even used a clip of The Beatles in a 1960s episode, to which one of the companions started dancing. I suspect viewers weren't particularly pissed off back then.

Also - RTD is the King of Dialogue. He wears a crown and everything!

But the Buffy one was very similar, what with it being Andrew talking to the camera, reflecting on his time spent with Buffy.

Ah yes. That was a good episode. One of the few in the later seasons.

His episodes were mostly good, really. He stopped writing the story arc episodes so he had the chance to work on some experimental ones. Like 'Restless' and 'The Body'!

Ahh, 'The Body.' I still hold that as the most disturbing 45 mins of television ever.

Anyway... Dr Who, eh? Let's hope next week's is an improvement. I liked the drawing that came to life.
