Doctor Who

Mate, I get as hung up on what Doctor Who "should be like" as anyone. This episode taught me that it can be completely frivolous, comedic, and full-on silly, and still be really entertaining.

Yes it was self-indulgent. But it also indulged the viewer, almost like a holiday for the fans.

You'll love it later.

Well, I'll be buying it on DVD, so I guess I'll find out. Bah, I hate it when I work myself up into an opinion then realise it's most likely wrong. WHO 4 LIFE.

Yeah, but there's far too much silliness in Doctor Who anyway. I dunno, I just didn't enjoy it; it seemed to be a bit too self-indulgent, with too much focus on the team and too little focus on the bad guy. All of RTD's monsters are completely 2-dimensional. They don't have motives, and I find that a bit unsatisfying.

 Please don't ostracise me from this thread.

I'm sure nobody would want to ostracise you from this thread my good man, but how could you not love this episode?

Yes it was silly, but I like my Saturday evening TV to be a little bit silly. The character development was kind of cute, also.

Peter Kay almost redeemed himself for his dire 'performance' on last night's Friday Night With Jonathan Ross.

That was a really great episode, I haven't dared go near Outpost Gallifrey yet, I wonder what they made of it.

Elton for the new companion, that really would be good, with his fellatio loving paving slab for comedy light relief.

I loved every minute of that one.

My 4 year old was proper scared when the Peter Key monster started chasing the bloke, but then burst out laughing hysterically when he melted. What more could you ask for?

Incidently, she's now decided that the doctor dies / regenerates at the end of every series. We were just watching Dr Who Confidential and she was asking what the new doctor would be like when he dies at the end. After I explained that the Doctor might not always die at the end of each series, she asked me, "will we die at the end?"

That reminds me. I've tried to register on there, but it says something like "registration disabled". How do I join?

This is from Outpost Gallifrey on that subject:

Please note: new member registration may be unavailable on the Saturday of transmission of new episodes in the UK, starting April 15; if you click on the Register button at right and it says that new member registration has been disabled, this is why. This is simply due to extremely heavy use of our server on transmission days and we cannot process new members at that time. Usually this will change much later in the evening, but registration will usually be back on the Sunday after. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I wonder how many people downloaded Mr Blue Sky after transmission, they played a few seconds during DIY SOS the other week (yes yes I know, er the missus likes it) so I had to grab it then.

Mr Blue Sky is on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Great soundtrack, great movie.

K - it's a bit of a difficult thread this one if you don't blindly lap up everything the new series throws at you. I feel a bit 'is it just me...?' when you get the dozen or so 'That was the most amazing thing ever in the history of the universe!' posts straight after each episode, but things normally settle down into more constructive (and inclusive) stuff after an hour or so.

Anyone else enjoy the similarities between Marc Warren's character and Rose's dad in the 'seduction' scene? Came across as really believeable that Rose's mum would go for someone with the same jittery, wide-eyed schtick as her deceased hubby - nice writing and performances. Can I just have my support for Rose's Mum on record on the basis of this evening's show?

So. Anyone reckon they're gonna mix this evening's better (in parts) direction, cracking dialogue and gutsyness with a decent story any time soon? Every element for a mind blowing show is there, but they haven't put it all together in one episode yet this season as far as I can tell (haven't seen Girl in the Fireplace)...

Aye, again it was one of those episodes where the potential was there but it wasn't executed too well I felt. I really like the idea that there are a group of people following the Doctor. It's an idea they almost explored before and one which I still think could be done much better.

Comedy-wise, some of the lines were good but I really, really hate all the slapstick gags and really unsubtle gay references that Davies always tends to shoehorn in there.

It also had a staggering similarity to an episode of another TV show (which I won't mention) except not as good.

So fucking stupid, and yet so utterly brilliant. Great stuff. It felt like a Comic Relief Who but done perfectly.

Marc Warren and ELO FTW! Two of my favourite tracks in there (Mr Blue Sky is the utter fucking best), if only they could've squeezed Jungle in too...

Peter Kay was great, and his constant references to his 'Ecxeema' had me chortling along.

Another London episode next week. Hmmm... might be good though - the childrens drawings come to life aspect could be pretty damned creepy if handled right.

Nowt wrong with his appearance on Jonny Ross - really funny bloke.

As for the episode, Kay was great as Victor Kennedy although his northern alien was kind of spooky. Love the flashback stuff from the bloke from Hustle when he was chased by Autons, etc. ELO! Elton John! Jackie getting frisky! Pretty good, although definitely marmite.
