Paradigm
I shouted out "Moaning Myrtle!" as soon as she appeared like the big HP geek I am. And I thought the nod to The Five Doctors was great, as that was my favourite ever Doctor Who ep as a kid.
JohnC
It was just really funny, but also creepy - I wouldn't have liked the absorbed faces as a kid. And it was designed by a 9 year old in a Blue Peter competition!
Geo
oooh, the tiny Elton John clip had me chuckling away too. Marc Warren is so underrated as an actor, he's amazing in Band of Brothers.
Tequila
Marc Warren is the boy. An incredible performance in Band of Brothers, some real charm in Hustle, and now this. I too would love him as the next companion.
cassidy
Just remembered how hilarious seeing Jackie flirt with Elton was How did you find the Jackie appearance DSD, seeing as you aint a bigfan? Anyway I'm away to get hanging. See youse later
MrNobody
Know what you mean, MrNobody but after the really derivative stuff of the last couple of episodes I respect it's distinctiveness (and mad-eyed nutso-ness)... Oh yeah, definitely - I thought the rest of the episode was pretty ace, particularly as a change of tone from the rest of the series

SteveH
10/10. I was thinking it should have ended on the fade to white bit with the kid and his mum, but the ending was surreal and funny. RTD for the win. I was thinking the exact same thing. The white fading and the Dr Who music kicking in, was exactly what I thought I'd see. K
I thought that was fucking rubbish, to be honest. That bit at the start where the Doctor, Rose, and that generic alien thing were hilariously running back and forth across three sets of doors - in the style of Scooby Friggin' Doo - really got my hackles up, and they'd barely receded at all by the end. MrPogo
It reminds me a bit of one X-Files episode (possibly "Jose Chung's 'From Outer Space'") mainly because of the slightly surreal styling of it all, where an author is writing a 'real life conspiracy' type book on a case, with numerous people involved being interviewed by the guy, all with their own take on their part of the story, resulting in some scenes being shown multiple times from the different viewpoints: ie, one guy sees Mulder as a threatening 'men in black' character, another as a bungling fool whilst Scully is the real brains, some girl views him as a suave James Bond-alike with Scully the bitchy 'hands off, he's mine!' type etc etc.

Darren
Best. Episode. Ever! I was really surprised that it ended with Elton being left behind, I was so convinced the entire episode was setting him up as the next companion. Although of course that could still happen. I'd love to see Jackie's reaction if Rose turned up with him in tow.

The best X-Files eps were always the weird/quirky ones - the vampire one, the Christmas Eve one, etc.

It was meant to be silly, it was the guy telling an anecdote, rather than an exact portrayal of what happened. And the Scooby Doo nod was deliberate. There's always one isn't there? djezz
that was a real relief, they should have put this episode between the two turgid two parters to break things up a bit really, but anyhow it came just as i was considering giving up on the series. ready for next week now. Davros sock drawer
I thought that was absolutely dire. Chuffing horrific. Why?! As others have said, if it was like this every week it would be terrible. But as a one-off, it was brilliant. Don't forget, no other show can do this. No other show can be this diverse. There's always one isn't there? Yeah, but there's far too much silliness in Doctor Who anyway. I dunno, I just didn't enjoy it; it seemed to be a bit too self-indulgent, with too much focus on the team and too little focus on the bad guy. All of RTD's monsters are completely 2-dimensional. They don't have motives, and I find that a bit unsatisfying. Please don't ostracise me from this thread.

This episode taught me that it can be completely frivolous, comedic, and full-on silly, and still be really entertaining. Yes it was self-indulgent. But it also indulged the viewer, almost like a holiday for the fans. You'll love it later.
