Doctor Who

I thought this was a brilliant episode with great story and pace - BUT:

The dialogue. Oh my god, it was utterly awful. When that guy started reciting something while the girl floated off into the black hole I wanted to kick the telly in. The first joke was lame and then it continued from there. When the Doctor hugged that guy I was wincing. OK WE GET IT HE LIKES HUMANS.

Also, I'm sick of the Doctor being so excited about every situation while at the same time indicating he's done it all before. "Oooh, it's a sanctuary base!". I'd like to see "where the hell are we?" from time to time. Of course, that was sort of provided a bit later with all the "science" hokum, but in general, the whole episode had the Doctor going "I'm fantastic I am".

GRRR! I managed to enjoy the story despite these problems though.

That's just his character.

I'm sure if a story requires it, he'll be as mystified as we are, but the writer users him as a tool to explain to audiences just where the hell we are. Removes the need for a lot of boring dialogue later on.

Good point.

Of course, this episode was full of boring science dialogue (I was very surprised about that) anyway. But in general, you're absolutely right.

I do know where you're coming from Jumble. Occasionally I wish they would reign in that smugness in his (and rose's) character. But by the time the real story kicked in last week, he was suitably po-faced.

One thing I have noticed with New Who so far, is that the Doctor never seems to be in danger. I seem to remember Tom Baker always getting beaten up, or being tortured by some sort of brain ray. In the Deadly Assassin, he gets shot, and nearly drowned! I used to like that, the Doctor being in peril, the feeling of "how is he going to get out of this potentially extremely violent death?".

Now he just seems to get a bit angry, then win.

Another reason why I like the books.

the doctor was forever getting in a right pickle.

In prison for 3 yrs

Tortured and abused and nearly beaten to death on a couple of occasions too.

However I cant see it happening at 7.00 on a Sat night.

Then again TIP was more than a bit scary.

Could somebody do me a big favour, please? I'm not going to be around for most of the next week (with little access to TV), and as such I'm going to miss this week's episode of Doctor Who. I'd be really, really grateful if somebody could burn a copy of Saturday's episode to a CD or DVD, as it'd kill me to miss it.

(Actually, I'd love it if someone could burn a copy of last week's episode as well, because I missed the start).

I'll buy whoever helps me a little present. Thanks!

I don't know if it was the specific episode you're referring to, but I do remember an almighty hoo-hah concerning a cliffhanger where the Doctor looked like he'd drowned. Mary Whitehouse got involved and everything kicked off in a big way because kiddies were in tears up and down the country.

I just don't think they can get away with that sort of thing any more. Most of the "Doctor in peril" cliffhangers in the new series have simply been an army of *somethings* advancing on the Doctor and Rose, without much direct physical threat. (I'm thinking here specifically of The Empty Child, Rise of the Cybermen and the pre-credits sequence from The Impossible Planet). That's probably about as far as they're able to go.

Yeah, but it's a shame. And besides, Mary Shitehouse was a nutter, and is now an ex-incensed viewer and all round busybody.

It was that episode by the way. "You're finished Doctor! FINISHED!" Ooooo-eeeee-ooooo!

There were plenty of others though. Caves of Androzani ep 1 ends with the Doctor and Peri being mown down by a firing squad, and of course McCoy met his end at the hands of an Uzi-wielding punk.

Depends how much old Who you know.

"Oooooooooooh!" it is then. I don't know a lot of it myself, but my brother's like a walking Doctor Who encyclopedia, so I won't miss out.

Should have seen him on Monday at the pub quiz - the final question was "David Tennant is the tenth actor to play the Doctor. Name the other nine". I swear, his eyes fucking glimmered.

That's a really easy Who question.

Not even a whiff of Cushing, Grant and the impostor who doubled as Hartnell...

I'm sure somebody will be along to blow holes in even those omissions but I didn't claim to be a walking Who encyclopaedia.

EDIT: I know it was strictly a canon question but it could quite easily have been more difficult. I'd expect any average pub quiz team to easily answer the above question.

The one I always remember is Creature from the Pit. "You're standing on my scarf.. aaghhg"

That's a really easy Who question.

Could become all David Brent though and point out there have been more than 10.
